If OBS reports an error while starting the encoder, YouTube’s recommended first fix is to create a new stream key in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and update OBS. SSL errors and timeouts call for checking the RTMPS URL and port; a 400 shown during account linking or API setup needs a different diagnosis.
First identify which part of the setup is failing
The number alone is not enough to diagnose the problem. A browser or account-linking window, a YouTube API setup action, OBS’s Start Streaming action, and a later SSL error or disconnection are different failure points. YouTube documents separate remedies for encoder startup, RTMPS connection errors, and API requests; its API error list does not establish that an RTMP ingest error has the same cause. - Where does the error appear? Note whether it is in OBS, a browser or account-linking window, YouTube Studio, or an API response.
- What action immediately precedes it? For example, connecting an account, configuring a broadcast, clicking Start Streaming, or waiting for the connection.
- What is the complete wording? Record the text around “400,” including any SSL, timeout, or connection details.
If OBS shows the error when starting the encoder
When a third-party encoder has an error starting, YouTube recommends generating a new stream key in Live Control Room and updating the encoder. YouTube encoder troubleshooting
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room for the scheduled or current stream.
- Copy a new stream key for that stream.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream, then replace the existing key with the new one. Check that the server URL and key belong to the intended stream.
- Apply the settings and try Start Streaming again.

If the message mentions SSL or a timeout
Use the RTMPS URL shown in Live Control Room and verify that OBS is configured for that exact URL and protocol. YouTube notes that an ordinary RTMP URL may appear by default; an SSL error can result if the URL does not use RTMPS. If an SSL error persists with the correct URL, YouTube suggests specifying port 443. Google’s RTMPS guidance describes TLS connections on port 443 and requires the hostname in SNI authentication. - Copy the RTMPS server URL from the stream’s Live Control Room rather than relying on an older saved value.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream and confirm the selected service/server and URL match the current YouTube stream setup.
- If the URL is correct but YouTube reports an SSL error, try port 443 as YouTube advises. Avoid changing unrelated network settings until you have isolated this transport issue.
If the real symptom is dropped frames or an unstable connection
Dropped frames and intermittent disconnections are network or bitrate symptoms, not proof that a generic HTTP 400 has been fixed or explained. OBS says it is extremely unlikely for OBS Studio itself to cause dropped frames. Its connection guidance recommends checking the network path, bitrate, and software that can interfere with connectivity. OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting

- Try another ingest server if the service offers one.
- Reduce OBS’s output bitrate to fit your stable upload capacity. OBS suggests starting around 75% of total upload speed; this is only a starting point, not a guarantee, and YouTube’s bitrate limits still apply.
- Review OBS network options and check whether firewall or antivirus software, a VPN, or bundled network-optimization software is interfering.
- If the connection problem remains after these checks, contact your internet service provider.
If the 400 appears during account linking or API setup
Do not apply an RTMP fix to an error in a browser login or API operation without confirming the failure layer. Save the exact response text and identify the action that produced it. YouTube’s Live Streaming API reference lists request-specific 400 errors, including required and invalidValue for particular methods and resource fields. Those API errors do not by themselves explain a connection failure from OBS to YouTube’s ingest server. YouTube Live Streaming API errors
If replacing the key and checking the URL do not help, capture the complete error and the screen where it appears. Redact stream keys, access tokens, and other credentials before sharing the screenshot. The next step depends on whether the message is an API response, browser/account error, encoder startup error, or transport failure.

Check whether live streaming is enabled for the channel
YouTube requires live streaming to be enabled. First-time enablement may take up to 24 hours, so a newly enabled channel may not be ready to stream immediately. Check the channel’s status in YouTube Studio. YouTube live-streaming setup
