How to Fix an RTMP Handshake Failure When Sending a Loop to YouTube

Fix YouTube RTMP handshake failures by checking RTMPS settings first, then distinguishing connection errors from a loop-boundary playback problem.

When a looped video will not connect to YouTube Live, troubleshoot the connection before changing the video. Copy the current RTMPS URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room, use an RTMPS-capable encoder, keep YouTube’s server hostname intact, and connect on port 443. A handshake failure happens before the video is sent; a freeze or restart at the loop boundary is a separate playback problem.

First, identify when the failure happens

Record the exact encoder message and note whether it appears before the stream connects, after authentication, or only when the video reaches its loop boundary. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance covers SSL errors and connection timeouts, but those symptoms do not point to the same fix. YouTube’s RTMPS troubleshooting guide recommends checking the server URL and port for SSL errors, and verifying the URL and encoder’s RTMPS support for timeouts.

  • SSL or certificate error before connection: check that you selected RTMPS, copied the correct server URL, and are using port 443.
  • Connection timeout: recheck the URL and confirm the encoder supports RTMPS; then investigate whether the network permits the connection.
  • Connects, then disconnects: note when the disconnect occurs and check the encoder’s logs and stream health.
  • Remains connected, but freezes or restarts at the loop boundary: investigate the input and looping behavior rather than assuming the handshake failed.

Keep the full error and encoder logs for troubleshooting, but redact the stream key: it is a credential.

Fix the RTMPS connection, step by step

  1. Copy the current YouTube ingest details. In YouTube Live Control Room, open the stream settings and copy the server URL and stream key. YouTube may show the ordinary RTMP URL by default; use the lock control to reveal the RTMPS URL. Do not publish or share the key.
  2. Use the complete RTMPS endpoint. Check that the protocol is rtmps, the server is a valid YouTube RTMPS endpoint, and the application path is intact. YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion guide specifies port 443 and says the server hostname is required for authentication through SNI during the TLS handshake. Do not substitute an IP address or strip the hostname.
  3. Enter the key where the encoder expects it. Some encoders use separate server and key fields; others accept a full URL with the key appended. Follow that encoder’s field convention and avoid entering the key twice.
  4. Confirm RTMPS support in the encoder. RTMP support alone does not establish that a particular encoder build supports RTMPS. Update the encoder and choose a YouTube RTMPS preset if available, or enter the RTMPS URL and key from Live Control Room manually.
  5. Check outbound network access. RTMPS uses port 443. If the URL and encoder are correct but the connection times out, ask the network administrator whether outbound connections are allowed and whether TLS inspection is interfering. If permitted, compare from another network; that can help isolate a network-specific issue, but does not by itself establish the cause.

YouTube recommends RTMPS, which carries RTMP over an SSL/TLS connection. Its official guidance does not support disabling certificate verification as a routine fix. Correct the endpoint, hostname, port, or encoder configuration rather than weakening TLS checks.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0

Check stream settings only after it connects

Bitrate, resolution, and keyframes affect the delivered video and stream health; they do not fix a wrong endpoint or a failed TLS handshake. Once connected, test the stream and monitor its health in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube recommends testing with content that has audio and motion similar to the actual program and advises using CBR with a two-second keyframe frequency, not exceeding four seconds. Use YouTube’s current encoder settings table for the bitrate range that matches your selected resolution and frame rate; there is no single bitrate that applies to every profile.

If the problem appears at the loop boundary

A loop boundary can expose an input or encoder playback issue, but the cited YouTube and FFmpeg documentation does not establish looping itself as a cause of RTMP handshake failure or offer a universal loop-specific command fix. Separate transport from playback before changing settings.

  1. Save the encoder log with stream keys and other credentials redacted.
  2. Run one pass of the video, then test a loop with all other settings unchanged.
  3. Check whether the encoder actually disconnects or stays connected while the picture freezes, restarts, or loses audio.
  4. If transport remains connected, inspect the input and encoder’s loop workflow. For FFmpeg, consult its protocol documentation for the transport options you are using; do not assume a loop option caused the handshake failure.

Quick checks by symptom

Symptom Check Next step
SSL or certificate error RTMPS URL, intact hostname and path, and port 443 Copy the RTMPS details again from Live Control Room and verify the encoder supports RTMPS.
Connection timeout Correct URL, RTMPS support, outbound access on port 443 After checking the URL and encoder, ask whether network policy or TLS inspection could affect the connection.
Key or authentication problem Current stream key and the encoder’s separate-field versus full-URL convention Copy the key again and make sure it is entered once, in the expected field.
Freeze or restart at the loop boundary Whether transport disconnects or media playback alone is interrupted Compare a single pass with a loop under otherwise unchanged conditions.
Connected, but poor stream health Output profile, bitrate, CBR, keyframe interval, and input content Test and monitor the stream; follow YouTube’s settings table for the selected resolution and frame rate.
