YouTube Music already lets listeners share a card featuring up to five lines of a song’s lyrics. The newer update is an optional AI-generated background for that card—not a new lyric-writing tool. The basic sharing feature was listed in YouTube Music’s September 2025 feature roundup; AI backgrounds were reported rolling out in January 2026.
What YouTube Music’s lyric-sharing feature does
In the mobile app, listeners can select one to five lines from a track’s Lyrics view and turn them into a shareable image card. YouTube Music’s feature description says the card includes a link to the song. The card presents the excerpt alongside song and artist details and YouTube Music branding; its appearance can vary with the background chosen and the app version.
There is an important limit: the track must have lyrics that YouTube Music is licensed to display. A song can play normally without having a Lyrics view or lyric-sharing option, and different recordings of the same song may not have identical lyric availability.

How to share a lyric card
- Open the YouTube Music app on Android or iPhone and play a song with lyrics available.
- Open the Lyrics view.
- Select the passage you want to share, choosing no more than five lines.
- Tap Share in the Lyrics view.
- Choose a standard background, or select the AI-background option if it appears.
- If you choose AI, wait for the image to generate. The reported interface allows you to tap the AI control again to make another background.
- Use the phone’s share menu to send or save the card using the options shown.
Labels and controls may differ by app version or rollout. YouTube’s general sharing help also explains the ordinary route for sharing a song: open its menu, choose Share, then select a destination or copy the link. That standard option is simpler if you just want to send someone the track.

What the AI background changes—and what it doesn’t
The AI option generates a visual background inspired by the selected lyric text. It adds a different look to the card and can be regenerated, but available reporting describes it as image generation—not as a way to write, complete, translate, or rewrite lyrics. The selected excerpt remains the focus of the card.
A generated image may not match the mood or meaning you had in mind. If it does not work for your post, try another generation or choose a standard background.

Availability and Premium
YouTube Music listed lyric sharing as launched in 2025. The AI-background enhancement was reported in January 2026 on Android and iOS in the United States, where it had been seen on both free accounts and YouTube Premium accounts. That reporting does not establish universal availability: the controls can vary by country, account, app version, and rollout stage. Check the current app for the option rather than assuming it is enabled everywhere.
Premium should not be treated as a requirement for lyric cards: the reported U.S. rollout included free accounts. Subscription features and availability can change, so check the app and the applicable YouTube paid-service terms for current details. Consider Premium for its broader listening benefits, not solely to unlock this sharing feature.

If the Lyrics or Share button is missing
- Check the track: Try another version, such as the official studio recording. Live versions, remixes, covers, compilations, and user-uploaded videos may have different lyric availability.
- Confirm lyrics are present: If the Lyrics view itself is missing, the lyric-card share control is not expected to appear. Rights to display lyrics are track-specific; a subscription may not resolve that limitation.
- Update and reopen the app: Install any available YouTube Music update, then force-close and reopen the app. If lyrics are failing to load, try switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data.
- If only the AI control is absent: The background option may not have reached your account or region, or the app may not have the relevant interface yet. You can still use a standard background if that option is offered.
- If lyrics look wrong: The AI background is not the source of the lyrics. Use YouTube Music’s feedback tools to report inaccurate or incomplete text.
If a recipient cannot open the song, the track may be unavailable in their region, may have been removed or replaced, or may resolve differently in their app or account. The card is useful for sharing a lyric moment, but it cannot guarantee that every recipient can play every linked version.

Choose the lyric card when a short passage is the point—such as a line you want to quote in a social post—and you want it presented with the song. Choose ordinary sharing when your main goal is to help someone play the track. The card’s five-line limit keeps it brief, and an image is less searchable and accessible than selectable text, so it is not a substitute for sending lyrics as text when that matters.
