The Pirate Bay’s much-discussed encrypted clue did not contain a backup address, database, recovery key, or new distribution system. A Reddit user identified the puzzle as AES encryption, derived the key from clues in the site’s own page, and recovered a YouTube URL: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-YEG9DgRHhA. Contemporaneous reports described the video as an Arnold Schwarzenegger compilation built around “I’ll be back”—a joke that appeared to signal The Pirate Bay’s intended return.
Why The Pirate Bay disappeared
The episode began after Swedish authorities raided The Pirate Bay’s hosting location on December 9, 2014. The file-sharing site went offline, leaving visitors with a replacement page featuring a pirate flag, a countdown and several cryptic hints. The page suggested that the outage was not necessarily permanent, but it did not provide a detailed, signed explanation from a named operator.
One countdown pointed toward February 1, 2015. Against that backdrop, visitors treated every unexplained string on the temporary homepage as a possible clue to the site’s infrastructure or comeback plan.

What was hidden in aes.png?
The most prominent puzzle was an image file named aes.png. Its contents appeared as a Base64-encoded block rather than a normal picture. The filename pointed toward the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES), while the page source supplied additional suggestive text, including WeAreTPB and pipe vi Makefile.
Before the solution, observers speculated that the data might identify backup servers, expose a database or reveal code for a peer-to-peer browser. Those ideas were possibilities raised during the mystery, not what the encrypted payload ultimately contained.
How Reddit user dafky2000 solved the puzzle
The solution was attributed to Reddit user dafky2000, whose work built on clues visible to anyone examining the public page. Calling it a “crack” would be misleading: the password clue and cipher choice had effectively been left in the open.

- Inspect the page source. The solver noticed
WeAreTPBin an HTML construct that initially seemed unrelated to the visible page. - Read the filename as a cryptographic hint.
aes.pngsuggested AES rather than an unknown custom cipher. - Try key derivation from the clue. The string
wearetpbwas processed with SHA-256. - Use the reported AES parameters. The first 16 bytes of the SHA-256 digest supplied the AES-128 key, with CBC mode, no salt, an all-zero initialization vector and no padding.
- Decode the Base64 data. The resulting plaintext was a URL, not operational information about The Pirate Bay.
TorrentFreak’s report attributes these steps to the solver’s account and reproduces the historical command.
The exact message
The decrypted bytes spell:

The trailing zero bytes are unused block content or padding in the displayed output; they are not part of the URL. The video’s title, edit and availability may have changed since 2015, so the link is best treated as a historical reference. VentureBeat characterized it as an Arnold Schwarzenegger compilation featuring “I’ll be back” and related variations.

What the joke meant—and what it did not prove
In the context of a shutdown and a February 1 countdown, the Schwarzenegger reference was an obvious visual pun: The Pirate Bay appeared to be saying that it would return. That interpretation was widely shared, but the decrypted text itself was only a YouTube link. It did not prove that a particular operator controlled the page, identify a server, or provide instructions for rebuilding the service.
The distinction matters. The evidence breaks into separate layers:

-nosalt -nopad -iv 0 -base64 -d -pIt feeds the Base64 text to OpenSSL, hashes the clue, takes 32 hexadecimal characters (16 bytes) for the key, decrypts with AES-128-CBC and prints diagnostic output. OpenSSL’s command-line behavior and formatting vary by version, so this is a historical reproduction for the published ciphertext—not a command to run against a live service.

Solving the AES payload did not solve every mystery on the page. In particular, the meaning of pipe vi Makefile was not established in the available contemporaneous reporting. It may have been another hint, an internal joke or a fragment of a larger puzzle, but it should not be presented as part of the recovered YouTube message.

There was also a separate episode involving a similar-looking string associated with BitTorrent Sync and a publicly writable folder containing Pirate Bay-related files. That material should not be conflated with the aes.png ciphertext.

What happened after the decryption?
The Pirate Bay did return online around February 1, 2015, after several weeks offline. Contemporaneous follow-up reporting connected the timing with the countdown, but the encrypted message did not technically enable or document the relaunch. It was a playful signal whose apparent meaning became more compelling only when the site subsequently reappeared.
The episode’s lasting lesson is therefore less dramatic than the speculation surrounding it: a conspicuous cryptographic puzzle yielded a pop-culture callback. The encryption was real, the solution was reproducible from public clues, and the result was meaningful as theater rather than as infrastructure.
