YouTube Music appears to be testing a feature that puts machine-translated lyrics beneath the original words and keeps them aligned with playback. It has not been publicly announced as a general release: reports describe a limited test, apparently involving selected YouTube Music Premium accounts, and Google has not published a rollout date, supported-language list, or platform details.
In practical terms, seeing lyrics does not mean you will see a Translate control. If it is missing, that alone does not indicate a problem with your phone or subscription.
What the reported test does
Reports describe a Translate control in or near the mobile lyrics view. Tapping it reportedly displays translated lines beneath the original lyrics, synchronized with the song’s playback. The discovery was attributed to a user sighting and screenshots, then covered by technology publications; YouTube has not publicly documented the feature. Android Central’s report and Android Headlines’ coverage describe the early test.

If the original lyric text or timing is missing or inaccurate, translation cannot fix that underlying problem.

Early reports say the test used the phone’s system language or YouTube Music’s app language as the translation target. They did not show a manual language picker in the lyrics panel. That is a description of the reported test, not a confirmed final design. Coverage has also speculated about Google translation technology, but Google has not confirmed the implementation.
Who can use it?
The initial reports described access for a small group of YouTube Music Premium subscribers. That does not mean every Premium subscriber has it, nor does it establish that Premium will be required if the feature is released more broadly. A test can depend on several separate conditions:

- Account access: the account may or may not be included in the experiment.
- App and platform: the relevant interface may be limited to certain builds or devices.
- Track support: lyrics, timing data, and translation availability can vary by recording.
- Language support: no authoritative list of supported languages or language pairs has been published.
The discovery and reporting focused on a mobile interface, apparently Android. Availability on iPhone, the web player, TVs, cars, wearables, or Cast playback has not been confirmed in the sources available. There is also no confirmed minimum app version, country list, or public rollout schedule. YouTube Music’s official Help page describes the service and Premium, but does not document lyrics translation.
How to check for the Translate control
This is a cautious way to check for the reported test, not an official support procedure:

- Update YouTube Music from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
- Sign in to the Google account you use for YouTube Music.
- Play a song in a language different from your device or app language.
- Open the Lyrics view from the Now Playing screen.
- Look for Translate or a similar translation control near the lyrics.
- If it appears, tap it and see whether translated lines display beneath the original. Try a few different tracks before drawing a conclusion.
Updating is sensible, but it may not unlock the feature: reports indicate that access is also limited through a test rollout. There is no verified or recommended way to force enrollment. Avoid sideloaded apps, account-flag changes, and unofficial unlock tools.
Why might it be missing—or work on only one song?

A useful distinction is whether a track has no lyrics, static lyrics, time-synchronized lyrics, or synchronized lyrics that can be translated. Each is a separate condition; the presence of one does not guarantee the next. Try the official album recording rather than a remix, live version, or user upload if a track behaves unexpectedly. Offline translation has not been confirmed.

How accurate should you expect it to be?
Machine translation can provide a quick sense of what a song is about, but lyrics are unusually difficult to translate. Slang, dialect, idioms, metaphors, wordplay, rhyme, deliberate ambiguity, incomplete phrases, phonetic spellings, and proper names can all produce awkward or misleading results. The source lyrics themselves may also be transcribed incorrectly. A translation can therefore be wrong because of the lyrics data, its timing, the translation, or some combination of them.

For language study, literary interpretation, or a line whose meaning matters, compare the original with another translation or a reliable human translation. Do not treat an in-app result as an authoritative rendering of an artist’s intent.

Should you pay for Premium just for translation?
No—not on the evidence available. Selected Premium users reportedly saw the test, but a subscription does not guarantee access, and neither the final eligibility rules nor the eventual price of the feature has been announced. Consider Premium for benefits YouTube already documents, such as ad-free playback, background listening, and downloads, rather than for an experimental translation control. Prices vary by country, taxes, promotions, and billing channel. For example, the U.S. App Store listing showed different in-app prices for YouTube Music and YouTube Premium; those figures are not necessarily the price charged through Google’s website or Google Play. Check the price shown in your own account before subscribing.
Alternatives when it is unavailable
- Google Translate: a manual fallback for text you can access. You may need to switch apps or copy and paste, and it will not provide a verified synchronized lyrics display.
- Human or specialist translations: a better choice for poetry, opera, rap, regional dialects, or close language study. Check the translator and source; search results can include incomplete, inaccurate, or unauthorized reposts.
- Other streaming services: compare their current features if you are choosing a music subscription, but do not assume they offer equivalent synchronized lyric translation. The available research did not verify a current U.S. translation feature for Spotify or Apple Music.
When checking translations on third-party lyric pages, be cautious about accuracy, rights, aggressive advertising, and suspicious downloads. Avoid reposting full copyrighted lyrics or lengthy translated excerpts.
