Ads earn from eligible ad impressions that YouTube serves; Super Chat earns when viewers choose to pay to highlight a message. Compare the revenue YouTube attributes to each feature on your own channel over the same period—not generic CPM figures.
How the two revenue sources work
Ads: revenue depends on delivery
For a monetized live stream with monetization enabled, YouTube can run pre-roll and display ads, and mid-roll ads can be inserted automatically or manually. An available slot does not guarantee an ad: YouTube decides whether to serve one, and a viewer may continue watching without seeing an ad. Delivery can vary with factors such as viewer geography, ad availability, targeting and Premium status. YouTube’s live-stream monetization guidance explains the controls and limitations.
Super Chat: revenue depends on viewer purchases
Super Chat lets eligible viewers pay to make a message stand out in live chat; Super Stickers are a related paid feature. Its revenue therefore depends on viewers who are eligible and willing to buy, rather than on the number of ad impressions. YouTube says fan-funding features are not crowdfunding or donation tools, and money received may be treated differently under applicable laws. YouTube’s Commerce Products monetization policies describe eligibility and feature conditions.
What YouTube’s revenue-share figures do—and do not—tell you
YouTube’s partner earnings overview states that the Commerce Product Module pays creators 70% of net revenue from channel memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers and Super Thanks. It states that the Watch Page Monetization Module pays creators 55% of net revenue from ads displayed or streamed on public videos on their content Watch Page. These percentages apply to different modules and revenue bases. They do not predict how much viewers will spend or how many ads will be served, so they cannot establish which source will earn more for a particular stream. Check the terms that apply to your own Studio agreements. YouTube’s partner earnings overview sets out the stated shares.

How to compare earnings on your own 24/7 stream
- Choose a comparable time window. Use the same length of time for both revenue figures, such as the same week or month. For a useful comparison, choose periods with reasonably similar audience size and streaming schedule.
- Find live-stream ad revenue. In YouTube Analytics, use the Live filter to isolate revenue associated with live streams and replays. YouTube says estimated ad revenue for live streams and replays can be broken out this way. See YouTube’s live-stream instructions.
- Compare it with Super Chat revenue for that same period. Compare the feature-specific revenue, not total channel income, so other sources do not blur the result.
- Repeat across more than one period before changing your approach. Audience size, location, ad delivery and viewers’ purchase behavior can change, so one period is not a reliable forecast of the next.
Do not estimate creator earnings by multiplying views by CPM. CPM reflects what advertisers pay before YouTube’s share, and not every view receives an ad. RPM is not a clean ads-versus-Super-Chat measure either: it represents revenue per 1,000 video views and combines revenue sources, including ads, Premium, memberships and Super Chat. YouTube Analytics separates estimated ad revenue from estimated revenue across all revenue types. YouTube’s guide to ad revenue analytics explains these metrics.
How mid-roll settings affect the comparison
YouTube recommends automatic mid-roll ads and offers low, medium and high frequency settings. You can also choose scheduled breaks at 6, 12, 18, 24 or 30-minute intervals, or insert breaks manually. YouTube says earnings potential may be lower with scheduled or manual settings than with automatic mode; that is not a guarantee of a particular result for your stream.

YouTube says its automatic system temporarily pauses mid-rolls for viewers sending gifts, Super Chats or Stickers, and snoozes them for everyone during high-engagement moments. Automatic ads are not necessarily shown to every viewer at the same time. The controls may help limit interruptions around those moments, but an ad slot is still not guaranteed to serve.
YouTube reported an average uplift of over 20% in instream ad revenue per hour for channels with live automatic mid-roll ads enabled compared with channels without them, averaged across 207 countries in January 2024. This is a historical platform-reported comparison about enabling automatic mid-rolls—not a comparison with Super Chat, an individual-channel forecast or a promise of increased earnings. Eligibility can limit either option
Ads require an eligible, monetized channel and monetization enabled for the live stream. YouTube’s minimum fan-funding requirements include being in the YouTube Partner Program, being at least 18, and living in a region where the feature is available; individual features may have additional criteria. Check YouTube Studio and the current Commerce Products monetization policies for your channel’s eligibility.
What this means for a 24/7 stream
Ads may contribute more when many viewers receive monetized playbacks. Super Chat may contribute more when a community is especially engaged and viewers choose to spend. Those are explanations of how each source works, not a universal ranking: YouTube does not publish a channel-independent comparison that establishes which one earns more on 24/7 streams.

If you operate a documentary stream, treat ad frequency as both a revenue setting and a viewing-experience choice. Compare actual attributed revenue alongside audience response over matched periods, and avoid assuming that more frequent breaks will automatically produce more revenue or that a large audience will necessarily generate Super Chats.
