You Can See Everything has made a major early theatrical impact, but it has not been established as one of the most successful documentaries ever. The Associated Press reported a $19.5 million opening weekend as the film expanded from 855 to 2,655 U.S. locations. That is a breakout start, not an all-time ranking. A final worldwide gross, a defined comparison method and a reputable documentary box-office list would be needed to support the larger claim.
The film is a 2026 documentary directed by Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim. Elizabeth Holmes invited the filmmakers into her life 34 days before she reported to federal prison, and filming continued with her partner, William “Billy” Evans, and their family for roughly three years. Its unusual access and self-conscious approach make it a significant release regardless of where its final box-office total lands.
What is You Can See Everything about?
The film follows Elizabeth Holmes immediately before and after her imprisonment. The official premise has Holmes inviting a skeptical film crew to document her every move during the 34 days before she is sent to prison. The camera then remains connected to her household, including Evans and their children, after Holmes enters custody.

This is not a scripted remake of The Dropout and it is not simply a conventional recap of the Theranos scandal. Holmes founded Theranos and was convicted of investor fraud; TheWrap reported that she is serving an over-11-year federal sentence. Her legal conviction is established context, while statements she makes about her own conduct are presented as her claims, not as findings that overturn the verdict.

Why is the documentary’s form unusual?
You Can See Everything treats access itself as the subject. The New York Film Festival describes it as a self-reflexive portrait that tests documentary objectivity and the boundary between fiction and nonfiction.
Holmes controls part of the frame
Holmes and Evans offer an intimate account from inside their home. That proximity can reveal ordinary routines and private reactions that retrospective interviews cannot, but it also gives the subjects opportunities to perform, omit and shape how events are understood.
The filmmakers challenge that presentation
Fielder appears on camera as an interviewer and participant. His confrontational, deadpan style creates a visible contest over who is directing the conversation: the people being filmed, or the people making the film. The result is an examination of how editing, access and questioning influence any nonfiction portrait.

When did You Can See Everything come out, and how long is it?
The confirmed U.S. theatrical release date is October 16, 2026. A24 lists the runtime as 2 hours 55 minutes; the New York Film Festival lists 174 minutes. In practical terms, plan for approximately 174–175 minutes, including a film that occupies most of an evening.
The project first surfaced through a secret screening at Telluride and then received a New York Film Festival presentation before its national theatrical rollout.
How strong was its opening weekend?
The Associated Press reported $19.5 million in the first weekend and an expansion from 855 to 2,655 locations. AP called it the biggest success story in theaters at that point. A rapid expansion of that scale indicates strong demand and gives the film a chance to build a larger total, but an opening weekend is only an early measurement.

|---|---|---|
| First weekend | $19.5 million | A major early theatrical result, as reported by the Associated Press in 2026 |
| Initial location count | 855 theaters | The film’s starting theatrical footprint |
| Expanded location count | 2,655 theaters | A substantial rollout after the opening |
| All-time documentary rank | Not established | No authoritative ranking or final gross is available in the cited reporting |
Will it become one of the most successful documentaries ever?
That remains unverified. The $19.5 million opening supports descriptions such as “breakout opening” or “major early theatrical success,” but it does not prove an all-time documentary record. The phrase “one of the most successful docs in history” is a prediction until the film’s final worldwide gross can be compared with a clearly defined list.

A serious historical comparison would need at least three pieces of information:
- the final worldwide theatrical gross, rather than the first weekend;
- a stated basis for comparison, such as nominal dollars or inflation-adjusted revenue; and
- a reputable documentary box-office ranking that uses the same definition of “documentary.”
Without those measures, the responsible conclusion is that the film opened exceptionally well and may continue to perform strongly, but its ultimate historical position is unknown.

Is it worth seeing if you already know the Theranos story?
Its value is less about discovering the basic scandal than about watching a filmmaker negotiate access to a convicted founder. The extended runtime allows domestic observation, while the self-reflexive structure asks whether intimacy produces truth or another carefully managed performance.
Viewers looking for a straightforward investigative timeline may find the approach indirect. Those interested in documentary ethics, subject participation and the mechanics of persuasion will find the tension central rather than incidental. The trailer’s brief exchange captures that divide: when Fielder asks whether Holmes feels she did nothing wrong, she answers, “I did not.” That statement should be understood as Holmes’s position, not as a replacement for the court’s findings.

For now, viewers should check local theater listings for showtimes and allow nearly three hours for the feature. Availability outside the United States may follow a different timetable and is not established by the U.S. release information.
What should viewers keep in mind about the legal and ethical context?
- Holmes’s investor-fraud conviction and federal sentence are factual background to the film.
- Her personal assertions, including claims of innocence, remain her assertions.
- The filmmakers’ presence means the documentary is not a neutral camera placed outside the story; questioning and editing are part of its subject.
- Evans and the family become substantial participants, so the film’s perspective extends beyond Holmes’s courtroom history.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is You Can See Everything based on a true story?
Yes. It documents real people and events surrounding Elizabeth Holmes, Theranos and her imprisonment. It is nonfiction, though its self-reflexive style emphasizes that filming and editing shape how real events are presented.
Who directed the Elizabeth Holmes documentary?
Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim co-directed it. Fielder also appears on camera as the interviewer, making his interactions with Holmes part of the film’s subject.
Does the film show Elizabeth Holmes after she goes to prison?
The filmmakers continue following Evans and the family after Holmes enters prison, according to ABC News. The reported production span is roughly three years, but the extent of prison footage itself is not specified.
How is this different from a Theranos dramatization?
It is an observational documentary built around direct household access, not a scripted performance by actors. Its emphasis is on Holmes’s self-presentation and the filmmakers’ struggle to interpret that access, rather than on recreating scenes from the scandal.
