Elementary ended with its seventh season because CBS chose to conclude the series, while its producers described the timing as a chance to finish the story. The public comments do not establish that ratings alone caused the decision. The 13-episode final season brought Sherlock Holmes and Joan Watson back to New York and gave their partnership a measure of closure.
Why did Elementary end after seven seasons?
CBS announced that Elementary would conclude after season seven; there was no season eight. The network’s decision and the creative choice to shape a final season are both part of the explanation. Executive producer Carl Beverly said creator Robert Doherty had accomplished the story he set out to tell, and that the cast and crew felt grateful for what they had made. TVLine reported the announcement and Beverly’s comments.
Doherty also said the team had been caught off guard when season six appeared likely to be the end. When season seven was ordered, the writers had a chance to resolve the remaining stories rather than leave the characters at that earlier endpoint. TVLine’s report covers that context as well.
What role did ratings play?
Ratings provide context, but the available reporting does not prove they were the sole reason CBS ended the show. TheWrap reported that the season-six finale, which aired in 2018, earned a 0.5 rating among adults 18–49 and drew just over 3 million total viewers. Those are figures for that episode, not proof of the network’s decision-making rationale. TheWrap’s 2018 report gives the figures.

How did the final season bring the story to a close?
Season seven consisted of 13 episodes, bringing the series to 154 episodes in total. It returned Sherlock Holmes, played by Jonny Lee Miller, and Joan Watson, played by Lucy Liu, to New York after a year abroad. The season made space to repair relationships and resolve character arcs. TVLine reported the final-season order.
Doherty said it was important to bring Sherlock and Joan home. The finale was designed to suggest that their work as consulting detectives could continue, even though the series itself was ending. In an interview with TheWrap, Doherty discussed the finale’s design.

What are Lucy Liu and Jonny Lee Miller doing now?
The publicly documented updates are not equally current or equally detailed for both actors. Liu’s official biographies and dated art-exhibition record provide recent information; the sources available here do not establish a reliable current project list for Miller.
