What makes IMAX relevant to Tron: Ares?
Disney describes Tron: Ares as the story of a highly sophisticated Program sent from the digital world into the real world on a dangerous mission—the first encounter between humanity and A.I. beings. The film is directed by Joachim Rønning, and Disney identifies it as both “The IMAX Experience” and “Filmed for IMAX.” Those labels make IMAX a deliberate part of the movie’s presentation, not merely an available theater option. The clearest explanation of what that meant on set comes from cinematographer Jeff Cronenweth. He said the production initially thought anamorphic lenses would best represent the film, but IMAX’s interest changed the parameters. In practical terms, that account points to a framing decision: the composition was designed with a wider IMAX presentation in mind, while avoiding an obvious shift between aspect ratios. It does not establish that the entire film was shot with IMAX cameras, or how much of the movie appears at either ratio. A larger screen may make the film’s digital-world imagery and action more immersive, but the sources do not quantify a screen-size or image-quality advantage for every theater.

What does Rønning say the film is about?
Rønning has described the story’s emotional center as Ares entering the real world, wanting to become real, and learning what it means to be human. He also called the film “wall-to-wall action,” while saying that making the audience feel for the characters was his priority. D23’s interview with Rønning
That helps explain why the IMAX question is more than a technical one. The film combines action with a character-focused story about an artificial being encountering human life. Rønning’s comments support that description of the movie’s aims; they do not, by themselves, supply a verbatim argument for why a viewer should select IMAX.

IMAX in theaters versus IMAX Enhanced at home
The theatrical IMAX presentation and Disney+’s IMAX Enhanced version are different viewing options. Disney announced that the movie would begin streaming on Disney+ on January 7, 2026, with IMAX Enhanced and an expanded aspect ratio. Are IMAX screenings still available?
The sourced theatrical events were tied to the film’s 2025 release window. IMAX announced early-access screenings beginning October 8, 2025 in IMAX 3D, as well as an IMAX double feature with Tron: Legacy. Those dates have passed; they are not evidence of a current screening. IMAX’s event announcement
For a screening now, check local theater listings directly. Whether the film is playing, in which format, and in which auditorium depends on current regional availability; no current showtime is established here.

What to know before watching
Disney cautions that some flashing-light scenes may affect photosensitive viewers. If that warning is relevant to you, consider it when choosing whether and how to watch. Disney+’s catalog listing
For viewers choosing between a theater and home, the strongest source-backed reason to seek IMAX is that the production’s framing and lens decisions took the format into account. For those watching at home, Disney+ provides an IMAX Enhanced option with an expanded aspect ratio, subject to the service’s current regional catalog and compatible equipment.
