She says she was afraid as Lauryn entered her teenage years and wanted to control what might happen to her. Licari also disputes sending the first message, a claim other people in the documentary do not accept. Her explanation is her account of events—not a diagnosis or independently established motive.
What Kendra Licari said she was thinking
In the documentary, Licari describes being in an “awful place mentally” and says the texting spiraled until she did not know how to stop. She connects her fear to her own past trauma and to watching Lauryn grow older. As reproduced by Marie Claire, Licari says: “As [Lauryn] started getting older, I had things that were suppressed come forward. A lot of it was previous trauma starting to resurface that I didn’t know how to handle. When I was 17, I was raped, and as my daughter was hitting those teenage years, I got scared. I wanted to try to control the outcome of her journey. I was afraid of letting her grow up. I was scared of what could happen to her.”
Licari’s account helps explain what she says was going through her mind; it does not excuse the harassment or establish why she acted. She also claimed someone else sent the first message and that she continued texting while trying to catch that person. Other documentary participants did not believe that version. The film does not resolve that dispute through independent evidence presented in the reporting.
How the anonymous messages affected the teens
Marie Claire reports that messages first began in October 2020, when Lauryn was 13, and continued for several weeks. They resumed in September 2021. The report says Lauryn and Owen received 30 to 50 messages a day during the later wave. Sent from multiple numbers, the texts included personal details, insults, sexual innuendo and, later, threats against Lauryn.

According to the report, messages claiming the sender was spending time with Owen caused Lauryn to doubt him. The couple later broke up, and the messages worsened. The harassment also reached the parents of a later girlfriend of Owen. The case therefore involved more than anonymous insults: the texts interfered with trust among teenagers and affected their families.
How investigators identified the sender
School officials brought police into the matter about 15 months after the messages began, according to Marie Claire. In April 2022, the FBI joined the investigation and traced two IP addresses associated with the anonymous numbers. The report says an adult’s phone number matched one of those addresses, leading investigators to Licari. The documentary shows officers confronting her in August 2022, when she confessed.

What is established—and what is interpretation
The documentary includes speculation by the superintendent and Licari’s cousin about a syndrome, as well as allegations by Owen and his mother about Licari’s behavior. Those are participants’ interpretations and allegations. No mental-health experts appear in the documentary, according to Marie Claire, and the film does not establish a clinical diagnosis. It is more accurate to describe Licari’s own explanation and the reported investigation than to present a diagnosis or a theory about her motives as fact.

The documentary depicts trust between Lauryn and her mother as strained. Director Skye Borgman, quoted by Marie Claire, says: “She’s remorseful that she has severely altered her relationship with her daughter in most likely a negative way. I mean, will they have a relationship? Will they get through this? I don’t know.” The film leaves that future unresolved.
