Spoilers for the entire series, including episode 4, “Cent’Anni,” and the finale.
Sofia Falcone murders her family because her father, Carmine Falcone, framed her for the murders he committed, her relatives helped keep her confined in Arkham, and Oz Cobb’s killing of her brother Alberto turns years of betrayal into an immediate revenge campaign. The massacre is also a succession move: by eliminating the relatives who block her, Sofia can claim the family power she was raised to inherit. Her tragedy is that she destroys Carmine’s legacy by repeating its violence, sparing one child while creating another survivor of Falcone trauma.
Why did Sofia kill her family in The Penguin?
Sofia’s massacre has three connected causes: Carmine’s frame-up, the family’s betrayal during her Arkham confinement, and Alberto’s murder by Oz. She is punishing the people who helped erase her life, avenging her brother, and removing rivals in one action. The series presents those motives together rather than treating the killings as the result of one sudden breakdown.

Gotham knew Sofia as “the Hangman,” the woman supposedly responsible for a series of murders of women. Episode 4 reveals that the accusation was false. Carmine was the killer: he murdered his wife and other women, then arranged for suspicion to fall on Sofia after she spoke with Gotham Gazette reporter Summer Gleeson.

That betrayal changes the meaning of Sofia’s reputation. She is not escaping punishment for crimes she committed; she is attacking the family that protected the real murderer and let the city believe she was a monster. DC’s official framing of the character emphasizes the same idea: labeling a vulnerable person as monstrous can help produce the behavior everyone fears.
Her relatives turned a six-month stay into a family sentence
Sofia is initially told that her stay in Arkham will last six months. Instead, she discovers that relatives, acting at Carmine’s direction, have written that she is unfit to return home. Her confinement is therefore not simply a medical decision. It is a family-backed removal from the succession and a way to preserve Carmine’s control.
The discovery is the point at which her rage becomes openly violent. Sofia learns that the people who should have challenged her father chose the family’s reputation and power over her freedom. When she later gathers them in the Falcone house, she is confronting an institution of betrayal, not just a collection of individual enemies.
Alberto’s death supplies the immediate spark
Years of pain do not by themselves explain why the massacre happens when it does. Oz kills Alberto, and that death turns Sofia’s buried grief into an active hunt for revenge. Her targets become Oz and the relatives who stood by while her father destroyed her life.
That sequence matters because Alberto is not only a victim in Sofia’s story. His death removes a remaining emotional link to the family and gives her a specific person to blame outside the Falcone household. The resulting campaign is personal, but it also creates the opening for Sofia to seize the power that her imprisonment denied her.
Was Sofia really the Hangman?
No. The series reveals that Carmine was the Hangman, while Sofia was framed and publicly branded for his crimes. Her later killings do not prove that the original accusation was true; they show how the abuse, confinement and betrayal shaped the form her retaliation took.

This distinction is central to the character. Sofia is neither an innocent who remains untouched by violence nor a secret serial killer finally exposed. She becomes capable of mass murder after the people around her use institutions and family loyalty to conceal Carmine’s crimes. The show asks how much responsibility belongs to the person who chooses violence and how much belongs to the system that made violence her language.

How did Arkham and the Falcone family change Sofia?
Arkham gives Sofia more than a place of confinement. It teaches her that her testimony can be dismissed, that relatives can rewrite her history, and that legal or medical authority can be used to preserve a powerful family’s version of events. Her release does not undo those lessons.
The family’s role is equally important. Relatives do not have to commit the original murders to participate in Carmine’s abuse; by signing statements that keep Sofia institutionalized, they help make his lie permanent. Their collective decision explains why Sofia attacks the household as a group. She sees complicity, not merely individual guilt.
Cristin Milioti has described Sofia’s transformation as a question with no clean answer: whether her rage was innate or produced by Arkham, she believes it is both. That uncertainty is deliberate. The show refuses to claim that trauma mechanically creates a killer, while showing that prolonged humiliation and isolation can direct a person’s choices.
Why did Sofia use gas to kill the Falcones?
Sofia uses gas because it lets her eliminate the family gathered under one roof in a single operation. Lauren LeFranc explained that the household arrangement made a one-stroke attack possible, and that the method was chosen to feel poetic, sly and visually tied to the gas-mask image.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe weapon also expresses Sofia’s new identity. A shooting would have produced a series of separate executions; gas turns the mansion into a sealed chamber of collective punishment. It is efficient enough to clear the succession in one night, theatrical enough to announce a new ruler, and impersonal enough to make the entire household feel condemned together.

Her yellow dress and gas mask complete that announcement. Sofia enters as a daughter returning to her family and emerges as a queenpin who has converted the Falcone home into a stage for her revenge. The image is not evidence that she has escaped Carmine’s influence; it shows that she has learned to use spectacle and fear as he did.
Why did Sofia spare Gia?
Sofia’s stated rule is that she will not kill a child. Gia is therefore spared while the adults in the house are exposed to the gas. The cake scene deliberately makes viewers wonder whether Sofia has poisoned the girl before revealing that the child will live.
The choice gives Sofia a real moral boundary, but not a clean moral victory. Gia survives as an orphan with the memory of adults dying around her, which means Sofia has protected her life while still leaving her with severe trauma. Milioti has described that code as twisted for precisely this reason: sparing a child does not prevent the child from inheriting the consequences of adult violence.
Gia’s survival also prevents the massacre from becoming a simple claim that Sofia has become identical to Carmine. She refuses one act he might have committed, yet she reproduces his larger pattern of using terror inside a family and leaving the next generation to live with it.
Was the massacre revenge, justice or a power grab?
It is all three, but each explanation accounts for a different part of the scene. Treating the killings as only one of these things makes Sofia’s decision seem simpler than the series presents it.
| Reading | What it explains | What it cannot explain alone |
|---|---|---|
| Revenge | Sofia punishes relatives who helped keep her in Arkham and targets Oz after Alberto’s death. | Revenge alone does not explain why removing the whole household also clears her path to leadership. |
| Justice | She exposes Carmine’s hidden crimes and acts against people who participated in his cover-up. | The gas attack is collective and lethal, so it exceeds any ordinary idea of proportional punishment. |
| Succession | Eliminating the gathered relatives removes the obstacles to Sofia’s claim over the family operation. | A purely strategic coup would not account for the grief, betrayal and personal symbolism driving her. |
| Tragic repetition | Her method shows how she reproduces the coercion and destruction associated with Carmine. | This reading must not erase her agency or the real abuse that preceded her violence. |
The strongest interpretation keeps the four readings together. Sofia is making a choice, and that choice is conditioned by what was done to her. The series neither absolves her nor treats her as evil from birth.

Did Oz cause Sofia’s breakdown?
Oz does not create Sofia’s trauma, but he activates its most destructive direction. Carmine’s frame-up and the Arkham betrayal establish the wound; Oz’s killing of Alberto supplies the event that turns grief into a campaign aimed at both him and the remaining Falcones.

Oz also becomes the person Sofia cannot stop pursuing. Her attention shifts from exposing the family’s past to destroying the man who has taken her brother and threatens her claim to power. That fixation gives Oz influence over her even when she believes she is acting against him.
The relationship is therefore not a simple story in which one villain makes another. Oz exploits the chaos around the Falcones, while Sofia chooses to use that chaos for revenge. Her tragedy is that the pursuit gives him a role in determining her future, exactly as her father once did.
Why does Sofia end up back in Arkham?
Sofia’s return to Arkham is the finale’s cruelest reversal. She escapes Carmine’s house and destroys the relatives who helped imprison her, but she cannot release her fixation on Oz. Her revenge gives him continued power over her fate, and the institution that once represented family control becomes her destination again.
Lauren LeFranc has described the ending as a fate worse than death because Sofia actively lets revenge keep governing her life. The cycle is complete without suggesting that her original confinement was justified. She was wronged by the institution and by her family, yet her response leaves her vulnerable to the same structure of punishment and control.
What does Sofia’s story mean for the series?
Sofia’s arc is a study in inherited violence rather than a redemption story. Carmine’s crimes create the conditions, the family’s silence preserves them, Arkham intensifies them, and Oz redirects them. Sofia then acts with enough agency to become responsible for a new catastrophe.

Her decision to spare Gia is the clearest expression of the contradiction. She wants to end the Falcone inheritance of abuse, but she cannot imagine justice outside the methods that family taught her. Gia lives, yet she has been made a witness to another household massacre. Sofia has broken the line of direct killing while extending the line of trauma.
That is why the show’s answer to “why did Sofia kill her family?” cannot be reduced to madness, jealousy or ambition. She was framed for murders she did not commit, imprisoned through a coordinated family betrayal, and pushed into action by Alberto’s death. She also chooses mass murder, uses it to claim power, and accepts the consequences only after her obsession has taken control of her future.
Frequently Asked Questions
What comic is connected to Sofia Falcone’s character?
DC points readers toward Batman: Dark Victory as the relevant comic source. The television series develops its own detailed account of Carmine’s crimes, Sofia’s Arkham confinement and the Hangman frame-up.
Was Sofia’s violence supposed to be innate or caused by Arkham?
Cristin Milioti has said she sees both possibilities operating at once, adding that Sofia herself may not know the answer. That ambiguity is part of the character’s design: the series shows conditioning without claiming that trauma makes every victim violent.
Where can I watch the episodes discussed here?
The episodes of The Penguin discussed in this explainer stream on Max, although availability can vary by country and may change as licensing agreements change.
Does Sofia’s ending resolve her conflict with Oz?
No. The finale places Sofia back in Arkham rather than giving her closure, so her fixation on Oz remains the force that has shaped her fate. The ending is intentionally punitive and unresolved rather than a clean victory for either character.
