Netflix acquired Ready Player Me, an Estonia-based avatar technology company, in December 2025. The deal gives Netflix tools and expertise that could help players carry a recognizable identity between its games—an idea that fits the company’s growing emphasis on games played together on a television. It does not mean Netflix has already launched a universal avatar feature: the purchase price was not disclosed, and Netflix has not announced when or where subscribers might see avatars.
What Netflix bought
Ready Player Me built technology for creating avatars that could be used across participating games and virtual experiences. Netflix acquired the company’s tools, infrastructure and team; it was not a game-studio acquisition. TechCrunch reported the acquisition on December 19, 2025, saying the company had about 20 employees and that its chief technology officer, co-founder Rainer Selvet, was joining Netflix. The reported transition did not include the other three co-founders. Netflix did not disclose the deal’s financial terms.
Netflix’s stated aim was to use Ready Player Me’s technology to let subscribers create avatars and bring their personas or fandom across Netflix games. In product terms, that could become a shared identity layer: rather than making a new character in every game, a player might reuse a personalized one. That is the announced direction, not a confirmed feature specification. Netflix has not said that one avatar will work in every title, which devices will support it, or whether other players will see it.

Netflix is extending games beyond the mobile titles that first brought the service into gaming. Its newer TV-based approach delivers games through the television experience, with phones serving as controllers in some cases. That can lower the equipment and installation barriers associated with console gaming, while making a living-room game accessible to a group with devices they already have. Specific games and device support can vary, so this is not a claim that every Netflix game works on every television.

Party games are a natural place to test the appeal of player identity. A familiar avatar can make it easier to recognize who is playing, give a casual session a more personal feel, and help create continuity when friends or family return to another game. Netflix’s January 2026 shareholder materials cited Boggle, Pictionary, LEGO Party and Tetris among TV party games made available to roughly one-third of members at the time, and described early results as encouraging. The shareholder materials describe a broader strategy, too: narrative games, party and puzzle games, mainstream games, and kids games.
The strategic bet, then, is larger than adding character creators. Netflix appears to be building games into a more repeatable social layer of its subscription and television experience. A shared avatar could help connect titles without requiring players to join a separate gaming network. It could also give Netflix a way to connect games with its entertainment franchises, for example through themed looks. That possibility is an inference; Netflix has not announced a cosmetics store, paid virtual goods, or specific franchise-avatar plans.

What subscribers can expect now
Ready Player Me’s old standalone consumer services are no longer available: the company’s site says its services were discontinued on January 31, 2026. That makes it important to distinguish the acquisition from a product launch. Netflix has not publicly documented a full subscriber-facing avatar rollout in the sources available here. A Netflix account should not be assumed to include a Ready Player Me avatar, and there is no announced launch date or separate avatar subscription.
If avatars appear in Netflix games, their availability could depend on the title, device, profile and region. Netflix has not confirmed whether avatars will work across mobile and TV games, whether children’s profiles can use them, whether users can change or delete them, or whether the system will be limited to Netflix games. Those details matter more than the acquisition headline for anyone wondering what will actually change in their account.

The open questions behind the technology
A persistent avatar is useful only if people play enough games to value carrying it between them. It also presents design challenges: a character system built for a casual party game may not fit the art style, camera, animation or rating of a narrative game. Netflix could choose to support avatars in selected titles rather than impose one identity system across its entire catalogue.
There are also privacy and safety questions, particularly because Netflix serves children and families. A social avatar feature would need clear rules for child profiles, visibility to other players, moderation and any associated identifiers. Netflix has not published a product specification for the proposed avatar system that answers these questions. Licensing can add another constraint: rights to particular characters, costumes, likenesses or third-party game properties may differ by title and territory.

Finally, ownership of avatar tools does not establish that Netflix is building a metaverse or a public social network. The acquisition could principally help Netflix and its game partners develop shared tools more efficiently. Netflix’s stated games strategy spans several types of games, and avatars could support only some of them—or remain an internal development capability rather than become a prominent consumer feature.
A broader games strategy, not a guaranteed avatar rollout
Netflix’s investor materials link games to goals such as engagement, member satisfaction, retention and word-of-mouth. Those are company objectives, not evidence that avatars have already improved those outcomes. The company has also described a kids-gaming effort, including Netflix Playground, and reported that about 10% of kids’ profiles had played Netflix games; those figures are Netflix-reported. Its shareholder letter gives the wider context for the categories and initiatives.

Ready Player Me gives Netflix a potential building block for making games feel more connected to one another and to the company’s entertainment catalogue. Whether subscribers will notice that investment depends on what Netflix actually ships: which games adopt the technology, what devices support it, and how identity, privacy and cross-game portability are handled. For now, the deal is best understood as an infrastructure and product-development move aligned with Netflix’s TV-games ambitions—not proof that a shared avatar system is already live.
