What happened when Morgan Wallen left SNL?
The incident took place during the closing goodnights of the Saturday Night Live episode hosted by Mikey Madison on Saturday, March 29, 2025. The episode is listed by Peacock as Season 50, Episode 16. Wallen was the musical guest and performed “I’m the Problem” and “Just in Case,” songs from his then-upcoming album I’m the Problem. After the final musical performance, Madison and Wallen stood at the front of Studio 8H for the customary goodnights. Madison thanked Wallen and the audience while the cast remained several feet behind them. Wallen appeared to say something to Madison, gave her a brief one-armed or side hug, and then walked briskly toward the main camera and out of frame while the closing sequence was still live. Madison and the cast continued the goodnights.

That footage establishes that Wallen left the stage before the on-camera cast had finished the closing sequence. It does not establish that he was angry, that he had argued with anyone, or that he immediately left the building. Most of the production crew was off-camera, so headlines saying he left before the “cast and crew” can be misleading. The visible event was Wallen leaving the goodnights before the cast finished.
The clearest explanation comes from Wallen himself
More than a month after the broadcast, Caleb Pressley asked Wallen whether SNL had made him mad. Wallen replied:
“No, no, I was just ready to go home. Been there all week.”
That is the strongest public evidence about his motivation because it is Wallen’s own on-the-record explanation. It supports a mundane reading: the week had been long, he wanted to leave, and the goodnights were the point at which he departed.
It is also important not to stretch his answer beyond what he said. Wallen confirmed that he was ready to go home; he did not say that he had a specific flight deadline, that he was rushing to catch the private jet shown on Instagram, or that he had disliked a particular sketch or cast member.
The Los Angeles Times follow-up also reported the explanation. Wallen’s comment weighs against the claim that he left because of an established backstage fight, although it cannot by itself prove exactly what happened in the few seconds before he walked out of frame.
Why sources called the exit an accidental rehearsal habit
Sources close to Wallen told Variety that the walk-off was an “oops” moment. According to that account, Wallen had entered and exited through the same route during rehearsal and camera blocking. This theory fits some details in the video. Wallen does not appear to stop for a dramatic confrontation, point at anyone, or exchange angry words. He speaks briefly to Madison, hugs her, and moves toward the camera in a way that could be a planned exit from the stage—or a performer repeating a route used during rehearsal. But the footage alone cannot determine whether the exit was accidental, intentional, or simply improvised. The rehearsal-route account should therefore be described as a reported explanation, not a confirmed production fact.
The private-jet post made the moment look like a snub
Shortly after leaving the stage, Wallen posted a photograph of a private jet to Instagram Stories with the caption “Get me to God’s country.” The post was ambiguous, but its timing made it easy to interpret as a public celebration of getting away from New York or from SNL.
Combined with the live footage, the post created a simple—and highly shareable—story: Wallen had completed his performances, walked away from the cast, and immediately headed home. Some viewers also read “God’s country” as a rejection of New York. That is an inference from the post, not a confirmed statement that he was criticizing the show or the city.
The post also does not prove that he had a flight to catch. It shows a plane, but no reliable public report establishes a departure deadline, confirms that the pictured aircraft was waiting for him at that precise moment, or proves when he left Studio 8H. Leaving the stage and leaving the building are separate events.
Why the exit looked deliberate
Wallen’s explanation was not immediately available when viewers first saw the broadcast. The visual impression came first, and several elements made the moment appear intentional:
- He left while the program was visibly still live.
- He walked toward the principal camera, making his departure unusually prominent.
- He did not remain onstage for the customary cast greetings and interactions during the credits.
- The cast stood behind Madison and Wallen, leaving a conspicuous empty space after he departed.
- He posted the private-jet photograph almost immediately afterward.
- His prior history with SNL made viewers more willing to interpret the departure as a sign of tension.
Kenan Thompson later told Entertainment Weekly that he “definitely saw it” and described the exit as a “spike in the norm.” Thompson wondered whether Wallen understood the assignment or was “feeling a certain kind of way,” and he said the “God’s country” post was not his favorite. Thompson’s reaction confirms that the walk-off was unusual and noticeable to the cast. It does not confirm that the cast had confronted Wallen or that anyone knew of a backstage dispute.

The report also claimed that Madison replied that talking with him had been good. Read the lip-reading report.
That interpretation should be treated cautiously. The exchange is not clearly audible in the broadcast footage, and lip reading from a brief, imperfect camera angle cannot verify the precise words. It is useful context because it offers a possible explanation for the apparent goodbye, but it is not audio evidence and cannot establish whether Wallen was sincere, sarcastic, or saying something else entirely.
The separate “Big Dumb Line” sketch report
After the walk-off, reports emerged that Wallen had been asked to appear in the pre-taped musical sketch “Big Dumb Line” but declined. Joe Jonas ultimately appeared in the role.

Variety reported that a part had been written for Wallen, including a sung bridge. Other reports, citing unnamed sources, said that he declined the sketch and that Jonas was brought in late. Vanity Fair covered the reported replacement, while LateNighter reported that Jonas was cast on Friday night and that the costume team had about 51 minutes to prepare him. Us Weekly also reported that Wallen dropped out of the sketch.
The sketch story is relevant because it gave viewers a possible reason to think Wallen had been disengaged or unhappy before the goodnights. But it remains a separate, source-based report. Neither Wallen nor SNL publicly confirmed that he declined the sketch because he disliked the show, and no reliable evidence demonstrates that the sketch decision caused his exit from the stage.
The most accurate wording is: Wallen reportedly declined a sketch appearance, and that report fueled speculation about the walk-off; a connection between the two events has not been established.

Kenan Thompson noticed the abrupt departure
Thompson’s comments are the clearest public reaction from a cast member in the supplied reporting. Bowen Yang said the cast knew of no major incident
Later coverage reported that Bowen Yang said, in substance, that “nothing happened” as far as the cast knew and that the group simply moved on to the next show. See the TV Insider report.
That is a useful counterweight to more dramatic interpretations, but it should not be presented as a complete backstage record. Yang’s reported comment indicates that the cast did not know of a notable confrontation; it does not reveal every conversation Wallen had with producers or staff.
The show turned the incident into a joke
SNL addressed the walk-off in the following week’s episode, April 5, 2025. The phrase “Get me to God’s country” appeared in the cold open, and Colin Jost joked during “Weekend Update” that money was leaving the stock market “faster than Morgan Wallen at Goodnights.” Read the reported details or watch the official clip.

Wallen had an unusual history with the program before the 2025 goodnights incident. In October 2020, SNL removed him from its scheduled lineup after videos showed him partying without a mask and violating the show’s pandemic-era safety protocols. Wallen returned as musical guest on December 5, 2020, performing “7 Summers” and “Still Goin’ Down.” He also appeared in a sketch that made fun of the earlier cancellation. Wallen’s official site recapped the appearance, and the sketch is available on YouTube.
