Why is the documentary ‘NAZA’ causing outrage in Israel?

NAZA is causing outrage because it puts Israeli insiders’ allegations about AI-assisted targeting and civilian harm at the center of a Hebrew-language film made by Israelis, just as the country enters an election campaign. The 80-minute documentary, produced by The Guardian, features 24 anonymised soldiers and intelligence personnel who describe systems that helped generate targets in Gaza and estimate expected civilian casualties. Israeli officials and the Israel Defense Forces reject the film as distorted and defamatory, while the filmmakers say the testimonies were carefully vetted. The dispute is therefore about more than one film: it pits confidential insider testimony against the military’s account of human control, and it exposes a domestic argument over what the public has been allowed to see about Gaza.

What is the documentary NAZA about?

NAZA was made by Israeli filmmakers Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor and produced by The Guardian. It centers on 24 anonymised Israeli soldiers and intelligence personnel who describe surveillance and targeting practices used during the Gaza war. Their faces and voices are concealed, and the film presents their accounts as evidence of a system in which software can help identify targets and calculate the civilian harm expected from an attack.

The film premiered at the Venice Film Festival in September 2026, where it reportedly received a 25-minute standing ovation and won the festival’s Special Jury Prize. Its Israeli authorship and Hebrew-language focus are central to the controversy: the film is framed for an Israeli audience, not only for international viewers already critical of the war.

What do the interviewees allege?

The interviewees describe tools that process large amounts of intelligence, identify people or buildings associated with Hamas and produce estimates of potential civilian casualties. One account reported by the Associated Press says an operation aimed at a single Hamas militant was expected to kill 500 civilians. That figure is an interviewee’s allegation, not an independently established casualty count, and the IDF disputes the account.

NAZA treats these stories as indications of a systemic approach to civilian harm rather than as isolated mistakes. Similar claims were reported before the premiere: Al Jazeera said in April 2024 that allegations about AI-generated targets and attacks that could kill people inside buildings had already emerged. The documentary gave those allegations a prominent Israeli cultural and political platform.

Why did the film trigger such an intense backlash?

Israeli makers and a domestic audience

Critics who might dismiss an overseas investigation as hostile have described NAZA as an internal betrayal because its creators and interviewees are Israeli. The use of Hebrew makes the film part of a direct argument inside Israel about the conduct of the war and the country’s public identity.

A challenge to the prevailing war narrative

Israeli officials and much of the public have described the Gaza war as self-defense after Hamas’s October 7, 2023 attack, with civilian deaths attributed in part to Hamas’s use of human shields. NAZA shifts attention to Israeli decisions: how targets are selected, how expected civilian harm is calculated and who authorizes a strike. That change in emphasis is politically explosive even before the allegations are proven or disproven.

Election timing

The controversy unfolded before Israel’s October 2026 elections. In that setting, the film became a symbol that parties could use in arguments about loyalty, national defense and treason, rather than being treated solely as a documentary investigation.

Limited domestic exposure

When the first backlash began, most Israelis had not seen the complete film. The Guardian reported that politicians and critics were responding to descriptions and clips, giving public figures an opportunity to define NAZA before broad viewing. That information gap intensified the dispute.

How have Israeli officials and the IDF responded?

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said, “We are fighting global antisemitic incitement. When it comes from within us, it’s simply unbearable.” Culture Minister Miki Zohar called for the filmmakers’ citizenship to be revoked. Army chief Eyal Zamir ordered a probe into military and intelligence sources, while protesters outside a filmmaker’s family home reportedly shouted “death to traitors.”

The IDF says the documentary gives a distorted and misleading account of target planning, strike approval, civilian-casualty estimates and the role of artificial intelligence. Its stated position is that human personnel make the final decision before a strike, even when software assists intelligence work or target generation. The filmmakers and The Guardian say the interviews were conducted with confidential sources and that the testimony was vetted.

Does NAZA prove that Israel used AI to target civilians?

No single documentary can by itself establish every factual or legal conclusion at issue here. NAZA records insider testimony and presents an interpretation of how targeting systems were used; the IDF contests both the interpretation and specific claims. The most useful way to read the dispute is to separate what the film alleges from what has been independently verified.

Issue NAZA account IDF position
Source provenance 24 Israeli soldiers and intelligence personnel speak anonymously. The military challenges the film’s portrayal and the reliability of its account.
Role of AI and software Systems process intelligence, help identify targets and estimate expected civilian harm. Software may assist intelligence or target generation, but human personnel make the final strike decision.
Expected civilian casualties An interviewee describes one operation with an anticipated 500 civilian deaths. The IDF disputes that account.
Scale of the practice The film presents the testimony as evidence of a systemic method. The military rejects the documentary’s overall characterization as distorted.
What can be concluded The film supplies allegations from confidential insiders. The military’s rebuttal means the allegations remain contested rather than settled findings.

Those distinctions also separate three different questions: whether the testimony is credible, whether particular strikes complied with international law and whether the policy was morally or politically acceptable. A viewer can regard the allegations as serious without treating every claim as proven.

How does Israel’s media environment shape the reaction?

The film arrived amid criticism that Israeli mainstream coverage gave little attention to Palestinian suffering. Al Jazeera cited a 2025 Molad study finding that only 3 percent of Channel 12’s coverage during the first six months of the war mentioned Gaza’s humanitarian crisis. The study counted 206 war-related images and video clips, of which only two showed Palestinian civilian casualties.

The Washington Post reported at least 73,789 Palestinians killed, citing the Gaza Health Ministry’s 2026 figure and noting that it does not distinguish civilians from combatants. The Guardian described the war as one in which more than 73,000 Palestinians had been killed. Against that background, a film built around Israeli testimony can feel to supporters like a long-delayed challenge to the national information environment and to opponents like an attack on Israel’s legitimacy.

Where and when can people watch NAZA?

NAZA premiered in Venice in September 2026 and opened in U.S. cinemas on September 30. International distribution was still being arranged in the initial reporting. As of October 26, 2026, there was no established DVD, Blu-ray or verified streaming release documented in the available reports, so availability depends on the viewer’s country and later distributor announcements.

The film’s immediate impact in Israel came before universal access to it. That is why descriptions, short clips and political statements have played an unusually large role in the argument over what NAZA actually shows.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the title “NAZA” mean?

The title uses an Israeli military acronym associated with “collateral damage.” It is a euphemistic term for civilians expected to be killed in an attack, which gives the film’s title an immediate connection to its subject.

Why are the interviewees’ faces and voices hidden?

The sources were interviewed confidentially, so the documentary masks their identities. That protects the people who spoke but also means viewers cannot independently check their military records or personal histories from the film alone.

Has the reported 500-death estimate been independently confirmed?

No. It is the account of an anonymous interviewee, reported by the Associated Press, and the IDF disputes it. It should not be read as a verified tally of people killed in that operation.

Is NAZA available to stream?

A verified streaming release was not established in the reporting available on October 26, 2026. The confirmed release information is its Venice premiere and U.S. cinema opening, while arrangements for other countries were still in progress.
