The right fix depends on which MX Player you mean. The Android local video player can usually be repaired by restarting the app, changing its decoder, or clearing its cache. MX Player’s online service is a separate product: OTT viewing is currently limited to India, while iOS, TV, desktop and mobile-web experiences are moving to Prime Video. Identify the failing platform first, then use the shortest applicable fix.
Identify the failure before changing settings

There is no confirmed general MX Player outage established by the official support notices cited here. To isolate the cause, play a different local file, try a known-good online title if you are in India, test Wi-Fi and mobile data separately, and compare with another player.
Quick Android fixes
- Force-close MX Player. Use the app switcher, or open Settings → Apps → MX Player → Force stop. Labels vary by Android manufacturer.
- Restart the phone or tablet. This resets temporary media-framework and decoder states.
- Update the app. Use the Google Play listing. If Play cannot install it, use MX Player’s official support and download guidance, not an APK mirror.
- Check internal storage. MX Player says installation uses internal storage and may require approximately 20 MB; free space on an SD card does not replace internal space.
- Clear the cache. The usual path is Settings → Apps → MX Player → Storage & cache → Clear cache. This normally removes temporary files, not your original videos.
- Test another video. If other files play, the original file or its codec is the likely cause.
Black screen, freezing or crashing: change the decoder
MX Player uses three decoder modes. HW normally uses the device’s multimedia hardware efficiently. HW+ can support additional playback cases but may expose firmware bugs. SW decodes with the processor and is often the best compatibility test, at the cost of more CPU use, heat and battery drain.
- Open the problem video.
- Open the player controls or overflow menu.
- Change HW or HW+ to SW, then retry.
- If SW works, leave that file or codec on SW. If it does not, test HW and HW+ separately.
For broader settings, MX Player documents Settings → Decoder → SW decoder (local), SW decoder (network), and codec-specific controls under Settings → Decoder → HW+ video codecs. Hardware playback can fail even when a chipset appears capable because of an unsupported codec or an Android media-framework defect. Video works but audio is missing
Silent playback often points to an audio codec rather than a video problem. MX Player identifies AC3, EAC3 and DTS as formats that may depend on the device’s built-in decoder. If an affected file crashes, MX Player recommends trying the setting that disables HW+ audio on SW video.
- If both picture and sound fail, test another video decoder.
- If picture works but sound is silent, inspect the audio track and try a different decoder.
- If only AC3, EAC3 or DTS files fail, use the official decoder settings before considering anything else.
MX Player says default codecs are included and an extra codec package is not normally required unless the app specifically asks for one; installing a random “codec pack” can create security and compatibility risks. Consult the official codec information.

When a network stream will not play
- Confirm that the address is a direct media URL, not a webpage.
- Try the URL in another player or browser.
- Check whether the server requires a login, signed URL or special permission.
- Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data.
- Temporarily disable a VPN, proxy, DNS filter or ad blocker to diagnose network interference.
- Do not attempt to bypass DRM, paywalls or geographic controls.
Some servers filter requests by application. MX Player’s network documentation notes that version 1.7.39 changed its default user-agent to a browser-like string and suggests trying the older MX Player user-agent form when a particular server stopped working after that change. This exception applies to configured network streams, not ordinary local files or normal OTT playback. See network playback guidance.
MX Player OTT content is unavailable
Do not treat an online-service restriction as an Android playback bug. MX Player says its OTT service is currently available only in India, and OTT services outside India ended on August 12, 2024. Individual titles can also be restricted by digital rights. Read the availability notice and region-error explanation.

The current product transition is platform-specific: the Android app remains available, while iOS, TV, desktop and mobile websites are being moved to Prime Video. If your screen offers Move to Prime Video, use that route rather than reinstalling an old platform app. The transition is described in MX Player’s current platform FAQ.

- Open Profile.
- Choose Sign in with Amazon.
- Enter the same mobile number and complete OTP verification.
If the option is missing, update the Android app. See the account-change notice and sign-in instructions.
Users who relied on social or other third-party logins may be logged out and may need to download offline MX Player content again after migration. Clearing app data or uninstalling can also remove settings and locally managed downloads, so preserve important files and credentials first. Legacy MX memberships were not renewed after April 30, 2026, with benefits ending June 8 or June 15, 2026 depending on billing route; this does not describe every form of Prime access. Casting and TV playback
MX Player’s documented casting flow requires the phone and TV or Chromecast device to use the same Wi-Fi network:
- Connect both devices to the same Wi-Fi, avoiding guest-network isolation.
- Play a local video in MX Player.
- Tap the Chromecast button on the video screen.
- Select the target device.
Restart the router and cast device, test a local file, and temporarily disable VPN or network isolation. Also check whether your TV still supports the MX Player app during the move to Prime Video. See the casting and diagnostics guidance.
Clear data or reinstall only after protecting your content
Use destructive resets only after updating, restarting, clearing cache and testing decoder modes. MX Player’s documented clear-data route is Home → Menu → Settings → Apps → MX Player → Clear data; device labels can differ. Back up local videos, subtitle files and downloaded OTT content, and make sure you know the current login method. Reinstalling can repair a corrupted package, but it cannot restore an unavailable region, expired rights, broken source file, unsupported codec or server-blocked stream.
Report an unresolved bug
After the failure, open Help → Bug Report. Capture the system log immediately because a later attempt can overwrite useful diagnostic information. Include:
- phone, tablet or TV model and Android version;
- MX Player edition and app version;
- local file or network stream;
- container and codec, if known;
- exact error message;
- selected decoder;
- whether another video works;
- steps already attempted.
