“Hawk Tuah Girl” is the internet nickname for Haliey Welch, a Tennessee woman who became famous after answering a risqué question in a short street interview. The clip lasted only seconds, but it created a catchphrase, a merchandise business, a podcast, celebrity appearances and, later, a cryptocurrency controversy and federal lawsuit.
That unlikely progression is why Welch’s story remains more than an old meme. It is a compact case study in how internet fame is made, monetized and exposed to risk.
Where the “Hawk Tuah” phrase came from
The video was recorded for Tim & Dee TV, a Nashville street-interview series, and posted on June 11, 2024. The interview itself ran for roughly 14 minutes, but one answer quickly overwhelmed everything else.

The response had several qualities that made it unusually easy to share:
- It was short enough to understand immediately.
- “Hawk tuah” sounded distinctive and repeatable.
- Welch delivered it with an expressive Southern accent and comic timing.
- The sexual joke was provocative without requiring any context from the longer interview.
Clips were reposted, captioned, remixed and turned into memes across social media. “Hawk Tuah Girl” became a nickname rather than a name Welch had chosen for herself.
Who is Haliey Welch?
Welch was 21 when the video went viral. Before her sudden fame, she lived in Tennessee and worked at a spring factory. She was not a long-established entertainer or influencer who had carefully built an online audience.
Her first name is spelled Haliey, not Hailey, although the more familiar spelling appeared in many early posts and reports. Her official website uses “Haliey Welch.”
The attention also produced fabricated biographies. False social-media accounts and posts claimed that she was a teacher who had lost her job, or that she was the daughter of a preacher whose family had rejected her. Welch said those stories were untrue. The rumors illustrate a common problem with viral fame: once a person becomes recognizable, invented details can spread alongside the authentic footage.
How a joke became a business
Welch initially considered retreating from public attention. Instead, she and her representatives began treating the viral moment as a commercial opportunity. She sold branded merchandise, received media representation and appeared at public events.

Within weeks, the phrase had moved well beyond the original video. Welch appeared onstage with country musician Zach Bryan and was referenced by celebrities and performers. She also left her factory job as the attention became large enough to support professional opportunities.
The transformation can be summarized like this:
| Stage | What happened |
|---|---|
| June 2024 | A short Tim & Dee TV interview clip went viral. |
| Summer 2024 | Welch became a meme celebrity, sold merchandise and made public appearances. |
| September 2024 | She launched the celebrity-interview podcast Talk Tuah with Haliey Welch. |
| December 2024 | She promoted the $HAWK cryptocurrency, which later collapsed in value. |
| 2025–2026 | She returned to media projects, charity work and entertainment while the crypto litigation remained pending. |
Talk Tuah and the attempt to build a lasting identity
In September 2024, Welch launched Talk Tuah with Haliey Welch, a celebrity-interview podcast produced through Jake Paul’s media operation, Betr. The project was an attempt to turn recognition based on one sentence into a broader personality brand.
Apple Podcasts lists 20 episodes for the show, with the listed run extending from 2024 to 2025. Its final listed episode is dated May 20, 2025. Welch later separated from Betr and worked with other management and media partners.
The podcast mattered because it addressed a basic problem facing viral celebrities: a meme can make someone famous instantly, but it does not automatically give the audience a reason to keep watching. Interviews, appearances and new projects were ways to show that Welch could operate as a media personality rather than only as the woman in one recycled clip.
Why politics became part of the conversation
Welch’s phrase was repeatedly pulled into political and cultural commentary. Some online users interpreted a separate exchange about whether she would perform the act on Donald Trump as evidence of a political endorsement or rejection.

The $HAWK cryptocurrency controversy
The most serious turn in Welch’s story came in December 2024, when she promoted the Solana-based $HAWK meme coin.
The token’s reported market capitalization rose to approximately $490 million before falling by more than 90 percent shortly after launch. Many buyers were left holding tokens worth only a small fraction of what they had paid.
Investors filed a federal class-action lawsuit on December 19, 2024. The complaint alleges that the token was unlawfully promoted and sold as an unregistered security, and that insiders or promoters benefited while ordinary purchasers suffered losses. Those are allegations in civil litigation, not established findings that Welch or the other defendants committed fraud.

As of 2026, it remains a pending civil action.
That distinction is important:
- A lawsuit is not a criminal conviction.
- The filing of a complaint does not prove every allegation in it.
- Welch has said that she did not control the token’s technical operation and did not understand cryptocurrency well, while the litigation makes broader claims about the roles of Welch and other participants.
In a March 2026 interview with Andrew Callaghan’s Channel 5, Welch gave her first major post-controversy interview. She said she believed other people were handling the launch. Her account is part of the public dispute, but it does not itself resolve the lawsuit’s allegations.
What Haliey Welch is doing now
Welch’s official website continues to promote merchandise, the Talk Tuah brand and the Pookie app. She has also worked on Haliey Welch’s Paws Across America, an animal-charity initiative established with the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee. The initiative says that donations support animal shelters and rescue organizations in the United States.

Welch’s rise happened at extraordinary speed. An unknown person became globally recognizable because a few seconds of spontaneous footage supplied the internet with a perfect sound bite. That fame could then be packaged almost immediately into products, appearances and media deals.
But the same speed created vulnerabilities. False biographical claims spread before reliable information about Welch was widely available. The public associated her identity with a sexual joke she had made in an informal setting. And when the $HAWK token collapsed, the commercial risks of attaching a famous face to a financial product became central to the story.
In that sense, the Hawk Tuah phenomenon has three distinct chapters:

- Virality: a memorable answer becomes a global meme.
- Monetization: the person behind the meme turns attention into products, appearances and media work.
- Accountability: commercial ventures create legal and reputational consequences that a joke alone would not.
The nickname remains attached to Welch, but “Hawk Tuah” is not a formal title or a separate celebrity identity. It is the phrase that made Haliey Welch famous—and the label under which the public has followed everything that happened afterward.

It remains a striking example of both the speed of online fame and the risks of monetizing it before the attention disappears.
