If Twitch shows a black player and an endless spinner, the page has loaded but playback has not completed. The cause may be an extension, browser or device setting, network route, Twitch incident, or one broadcaster’s stream—not necessarily your internet speed. Start by trying another channel, opening Twitch in a private window, and checking Twitch Status.
This guide is for viewers watching someone else’s stream. Broadcasters troubleshooting their own stream have different checks, noted below.
Find out whether the problem is Twitch, the channel, or your setup
Use quick comparisons before changing browser settings. Each test narrows the fault domain; a black screen by itself does not identify the cause.
- Check Twitch Status. Open status.twitch.com and look at the Video (Watching) component. The page also reports components such as Web, Chat, Login, and Video (Broadcasting). If an incident affecting video is listed, wait for recovery and retest rather than repeatedly changing settings. An all-operational status does not rule out a newly developing incident.
- Try another live channel. If other channels play, the issue may be limited to the broadcaster’s stream, its availability in your region, or a temporary channel-specific delivery problem. Twitch says broadcaster bitrate, encoder, codec, upload stability, resolution, and frame-rate settings can affect playback. If every channel fails, focus on your browser, device, network, session, or Twitch’s wider video service. Twitch’s playback guide describes these stream-side possibilities.
- Try another device on the same network. If Twitch works there, investigate the original device, browser, app, GPU, or device-level filtering. If it also fails, continue with a network comparison.
- Try another network. A phone hotspot is a useful comparison. If Twitch works on the hotspot but not on Wi-Fi, investigate the router, DNS filtering, VPN or proxy, firewall, network restrictions, or ISP route. If it fails on both, the browser, device, account session, channel, or Twitch is more likely.
Chat loading while video does not is useful evidence, but it does not prove the connection is healthy: chat and video use different services and request paths. Likewise, a speed test can show adequate bandwidth while packet loss, Wi-Fi interference, congestion, or routing still interrupts playback.

Try the low-disruption fixes first
Refresh the player and test a second channel
Refresh the Twitch page. If the player remains stuck, close its tab and reopen the channel. In the Twitch app, fully close and restart the app. Then test another live channel to see whether the problem is channel-specific.
Open Twitch in a private window
Try an incognito or private window. Depending on browser settings, it may disable extensions and use a clean session, making it a quick diagnostic—not a permanent fix. If Twitch plays there, an extension, cookie, or site-data issue is likely. Return to the regular window to isolate the cause.
Disable extensions, then identify the conflict
Temporarily disable all extensions in the regular browser and reload Twitch. Start with ad blockers, privacy or anti-tracking tools, script blockers, cookie managers, video downloaders, user-agent modifiers, page-modification tools, and security add-ons. Twitch identifies extensions, including ad blockers and developer-related tools, as possible sources of playback trouble; that does not mean every ad blocker breaks Twitch.
- Disable all extensions temporarily and reload Twitch.
- If playback works, re-enable extensions one at a time, testing after each change.
- Leave the conflicting extension disabled, update it, or use its Twitch-specific allowlist setting if available.
Avoid installing an unofficial “player fixer” to solve the problem; it may add more compatibility or privacy risks.

Clear Twitch site data, not all browser data
Stale cookies or cached player files can interfere with playback. Remove data for Twitch through the site-information icon beside the address bar or the browser’s site settings; exact labels vary by browser version. If Twitch-related domains are listed, remove their data too. Then close the Twitch tab—or restart the browser—open Twitch again, and sign in.
This can sign you out and reset Twitch site permissions or preferences. Clearing only Twitch site data should not remove data for unrelated sites. Clearing cache alone may leave a broken session cookie behind.
Check browser compatibility and playback settings
Update the browser
Twitch’s supported-browser guidance lists the two latest versions of Chrome and Firefox, and the most recent versions of Edge, Safari, Opera, and Opera GX. Other browsers may work, but Twitch does not guarantee full functionality for them. Update your current browser or test Twitch in a current supported browser. If the issue occurs only in one browser, it is more likely browser-specific than a Twitch-wide outage. See Twitch’s supported-browser guidance.
Test hardware acceleration
A browser and GPU decoding or rendering problem can leave video black, sometimes with audio still playing. Twitch lists hardware acceleration, outdated browsers, GPU drivers, and extensions among possible causes of playback error 3000.

- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
- Chrome or Edge: look under Settings → System for the hardware-acceleration option.
- Firefox: look under Settings → General → Performance.
Toggle the setting, fully restart the browser, and test again. If turning acceleration off helps, update the GPU driver and retest with it on. If it was already off, try enabling it. This is a reversible diagnostic test; neither setting is right for every system. Twitch’s guidance is in its playback troubleshooting article.
Check protected-content playback for error 7005
Twitch associates error 7005 with DRM playback problems. If that code appears, check that protected-content playback is enabled in your browser’s built-in settings: Chrome and Edge offer protected-content controls, while Firefox has a control for DRM-controlled content. Labels can change between versions. Update the browser, test without extensions, and try another device if the error persists. Do not download DRM components from unofficial sites.
Check the network, VPN, and selected quality
Test VPN, proxy, filtering, and Wi-Fi
For a comparison, temporarily disconnect from a VPN or proxy and pause DNS-level filtering or firewall rules that may block Twitch requests. If you are on a school, work, hotel, or public network, its restrictions may affect video. Restore your usual protections after testing. Twitch recommends testing another network and logging out of VPN or rerouting software during playback troubleshooting; changing DNS is not a guaranteed first-line fix. If Wi-Fi is unstable, restart the router or test with Ethernet where possible.
Set quality to Auto or try a lower resolution
If the player opens far enough to show its controls, choose the settings icon → Quality → Auto. If Auto still fails, test a lower option such as 480p or 360p. Twitch’s approximate recommended download speeds are shown below; they are guidance, not a guarantee of smooth playback. Latency, packet loss, congestion, Wi-Fi reliability, and the broadcaster’s settings also matter. Twitch notes that 1440p60 availability is not universal.

Black screen with a spinner, no sound
The player may be failing before or during stream authorization, delivery, or playback. Check Twitch Status, try another channel, then use the private-window and network tests before moving to site data, browser compatibility, and extensions.
Black video but audio plays
Prioritize the browser’s decoding and GPU-rendering path: test extensions, toggle hardware acceleration, update the browser and GPU driver, and try another browser or device. Audio without video is a clue, not proof of a particular fault.
Playback error codes
- Error 1000: Twitch associates this with compatibility issues, including outdated browsers, extensions, and possible regional availability. Update the browser, test without extensions, and see whether other channels play.
- Error 2000: Twitch associates this with network problems, unstable connectivity, router or modem issues, and extensions. Compare another network and test with extensions disabled.
- Error 3000: Twitch associates this with decoding problems, outdated browsers, hardware acceleration, GPU drivers, and extensions. Try the reversible acceleration test and update the browser and driver.
- Error 7005: Twitch associates this with DRM settings, unsupported DRM technology, or extensions. Check protected-content playback in the browser and test without extensions.
These are Twitch’s descriptions, not diagnoses that can be confirmed from a code alone. See Twitch’s playback error guidance.

Only one channel fails
If several other channels play, a broadcaster-side encoder or upload issue, stream-specific incompatibility, regional availability, or temporary channel delivery problem is more plausible than a general browser failure. A viewer cannot confirm which one from the player alone. Retry later and compare with other channels.
If you are the broadcaster
This article’s main steps are for viewers. If your own broadcast will not go live or viewers see a loading screen, investigate upload stability, the stream key and server, and compatible encoder settings instead. Twitch gives a baseline upload recommendation of approximately 3–6 Mbps, but a stable connection and suitable settings also matter. Use Twitch Inspector for connection and encoder diagnostics, and consult Twitch’s broadcasting troubleshooting guide.
When to stop troubleshooting and contact Twitch
If Twitch fails across supported browsers, devices, and networks, check Twitch Status again. If no incident is listed but the problem persists, contact Twitch Support rather than repeatedly resetting unrelated settings. Include the channel URL, browser and version, operating system, device model, visible error code, whether audio or chat works, and which tests changed the result. Add concise reproduction steps and a screenshot or recording; provide browser error logs if Support requests them. Twitch’s browser guidance also asks for browser/version, operating system, reproduction steps, screenshots, and relevant logs.
