Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhen HBO Max (formerly Max) will not open, load, sign in, or play video, first find out whether the problem is limited to one device, your network, or your account. Test another device before reinstalling anything: if it works there on the same Wi-Fi, focus on the original device; if it fails everywhere, check your subscription or provider access and avoid repeating local fixes. Max’s help center says the service is becoming HBO Max, while the app, accounts, profiles, settings, and plans remain the same during the transition (Max is becoming HBO Max).
First, work out what is failing
“Not working” can mean an app crash, a loading screen, a playback error, buffering, or a sign-in problem. Those symptoms point to different causes; clearing an app cache, for example, will not restore an expired subscription or fix a provider-authentication issue.
- Try another supported device on the same network. If playback works there, the original device or app is the likely cause. Max recommends this comparison to distinguish device problems from network problems (Max loads slow, buffers, or pauses).
- Try another network if you can. If Max works on cellular data but not home Wi-Fi, investigate the router, Wi-Fi, or internet connection. If it fails on multiple devices and networks, the issue may be account- or service-side.
- Try another title. If only one movie or episode fails, the issue may be specific to that title rather than the whole app.
These tests narrow down the cause; they do not confirm a live outage. The available official troubleshooting pages cover local and account troubleshooting, not real-time service status. If the same failure appears across devices and networks, stop repeatedly reinstalling the app and contact Max support or wait and retry.
Try these fixes on most devices
- Force-close and reopen HBO Max/Max. Close it fully rather than leaving it suspended in the background, then test playback again.
- Update the app. On Android, use Play Store; on iPhone or iPad, use App Store; on a Fire tablet, use Amazon Appstore. Search for Max or HBO Max—the displayed name may vary during the transition—and install an available update. On TVs and streaming devices, use the platform’s app-update control.
- Update the device software. On Android, check Settings → System → Software Update. On iPhone or iPad, use Settings → General → Software Update. On a Fire tablet, use Settings → Device Options → System Updates. TV menu labels differ by manufacturer.
- Sign out, then fully restart the device. In the app’s profile menu, choose Sign Out. Power the device off, wait about 10 seconds, turn it back on, reopen the app, and sign in.
- Restart the modem and router if the problem looks network-related. Turn off the streaming device, unplug the modem and router, wait 30 seconds, reconnect the modem and allow internet service to return (Max says this may take about one minute), then reconnect the router. Once it is back online, restart the streaming device and test again (Max’s network troubleshooting steps).
- Clear the app cache or data where available. Use the device-specific instructions below. Clearing data can remove local sign-in information, so make sure you can access the account email and password or provider login before doing it.
- Reinstall only if the failure appears device-specific and the earlier steps did not help. Delete the app, restart the device if possible, then install it from the official platform store. Max does not support installations from unofficial sources (device setup and unofficial installations).
If HBO Max is buffering or stuck loading
Max lists 5 Mbps as the minimum download speed for HD streaming and recommends 50 Mbps or more for 4K. These are guidance figures from Max, not guarantees: Wi-Fi interference, congestion, instability, packet loss, or other household traffic can disrupt playback even when a speed test shows a high result (Max app and website troubleshooting; buffering and network guidance).

A faster plan is not automatically the answer. First establish whether the connection is unstable or the fault is confined to a particular app, device, title, or account.

Android phone or tablet
To clear cache, open Settings and search for Max, select the app, then open Storage & cache or Storage and choose Clear cache. If that fails, Clear storage or Clear data may help, but it usually removes local sign-in details; reopen the app and sign in again.
iPhone or iPad
Install available app updates through the App Store and device updates through Settings → General → Software Update. If the app still crashes or fails only on this device, delete it and reinstall it through the App Store. Have your sign-in details ready.

If your access comes through a cable, mobile, internet, or other provider, choose the provider-connection route rather than starting a second subscription. Provider credentials are handled by that provider, and Max may not have access to them. If Max says you are not subscribed, verify which company bills the account and whether the provider entitlement is linked (provider sign-in troubleshooting; identify your billing provider).
When an error code appears
For “Something went wrong” or another error, update the app, test another supported device, and record the exact message or code before contacting support. Max’s error guidance recommends keeping the displayed code available (“Something went wrong” and error codes).
- Write down the exact wording and any numeric or alphanumeric code.
- Note the device and operating system, and whether one title or all titles fail.
- Say whether another device works and whether you tested a different network.
- Include whether the subscription is billed directly or through a provider.
This information helps separate an app fault from a network, account, title, or provider problem without repeating steps that have already failed.
