Taylor Swift has never headlined or performed at a Super Bowl halftime show, as of October 8, 2026. She has explained the decision herself, and her reasons are personal rather than a dispute with the NFL. Her explanation came on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in early October 2025, and it rests on three points: there was no formal offer, she would decline anyway, and her partner’s job in the NFL is the main reason.
What Swift said on The Tonight Show
Asked by Jimmy Fallon about the halftime slot, Swift described it as a question she had never really been put to formally. The short version of her answer has three parts, and each one answers a different rumor.
- There was no formal offer. Her contact with Roc Nation, the company run by Jay-Z that books the halftime show for the NFL, was informal. In her telling it was closer to a general check on whether she would be interested than to an official invitation or a planning meeting.
- She would decline for personal reasons. Her partner, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, could be playing in the Super Bowl itself. She said she could not concentrate on choreography and rehearsal while thinking about him taking hits on the field each week.
- She denied the footage-ownership rumor. Fallon raised a claim that she stayed away because the NFL would not let her own footage of her performance. She answered no.
Coverage of the interview quotes her as saying the decision has “nothing to do with Travis,” and that he would like her to do it. Outlets read that differently. Rolling Stone’s headline, “Nothing to Do With Travis,” takes her at her word, while other outlets treat Kelce’s career as part of the reason. Both readings are fair. The most accurate summary is that Kelce’s job is the reason she gives, but he is not the one blocking her. The quotes below are as reported by news outlets; the wording differs slightly between summaries, so check the broadcast before quoting exact words.
- “Jay-Z has always been very good to me. Our teams are really close.” (as reported)
- “This has nothing to do with Travis. He would love for me to do it, I’m just too locked in.” (as reported)
- On football, she described the sport as “violent chess” and “gladiators without swords.” (as reported)
Did Swift turn down the halftime show?
Only in a loose sense. Some early summaries said she turned down the idea during talks. The fuller reporting from the Tonight Show coverage describes no formal offer and no negotiation, only informal conversations. The accurate framing is that the NFL and Roc Nation never put a formal offer in front of her, and she said she would not accept one while Kelce is playing.

Who chooses the halftime headliner
Swift’s name often comes up because the NFL does not pick halftime acts alone. Roc Nation has partnered with the league since 2019 to book the show, and the league chooses the headliner. That means a performer’s availability and interest matter, but the decision is not a simple sign-up.
| Game | Headliner | Guests or notes |
|---|---|---|
| Super Bowl LIX (2025) | Kendrick Lamar | SZA joined him on stage |
| Super Bowl LX (February 8, 2026, Levi’s Stadium, Santa Clara) | Bad Bunny | Lady Gaga and Ricky Martin as guests; announced by the NFL well before the game |
| Super Bowl LXI (February 2027) | Not stated | No performer had been confirmed in the reporting reviewed for this article |
The Bad Bunny announcement ended the public speculation about Swift for the 2026 game. Because the 2026 lineup was set before that point, her stated reasons did not have to be tested against an actual booking.

Could she perform in the future?
Nothing in her comments is a commitment. Entertainment outlets, including E! News, have suggested she could be persuaded once Kelce retires, since that would remove the conflict she described. That is speculation based on her remarks, not a statement from Swift or the NFL. Unverified gossip reports, including one attributed to a newsletter columnist, claim she is not a contender for the show. Treat those as unreliable.
For readers following the story, the reliable markers are her own words, the NFL’s official announcement for each game, and the Roc Nation booking. Any future claim about a Swift halftime performance should be checked against those three before it is repeated.
