Britt Baker and Thunder Rosa’s Unsanctioned Lights Out match headlined AEW Dynamite: St. Patrick’s Day Slam on March 17, 2021. AEW billed it as the first women’s main event in Dynamite history and the first time two women faced each other in an AEW Lights Out match. Those milestones, the months-long feud behind them, and Baker’s later account of the pressure surrounding the bout make a strong case for its importance—without turning “most important in years” into an objective industry ranking.
What made the March 17, 2021 match a milestone?
AEW promoted Baker versus Rosa as a landmark Unsanctioned Lights Out main event. It marked two company-specific firsts: the first women’s main event in Dynamite history and the first AEW Unsanctioned Lights Out match between two women. The distinction matters: the record was about AEW and Dynamite, not a claim that this was the first women’s main event or first unsanctioned women’s match in all of professional wrestling. AEW’s event preview set out the billing and the match’s place on the card.
The bout took place on St. Patrick’s Day Slam, a special episode of Dynamite. AEW framed the stipulation as a way to settle an escalating rivalry outside the usual rules. According to the promotion’s storyline account, the feud had already included a Beach Break encounter in which Rebel exposed a bolt beneath a turnbuckle, Baker used it as a weapon, and Rosa was stopped after Baker applied Lockjaw. That is the angle as AEW presented it, rather than an independent account of events.
Why did the booking matter beyond the “first”?
A first can be a marketing label; its significance depends on what the promotion does with it. In this case, AEW put the women’s match at the end of a flagship weekly show and built it as the payoff to an ongoing rivalry. The choice gave the division the program’s main-event position, rather than treating the match as a brief undercard milestone.

The stipulation also shaped the stakes. AEW described Lights Out as a no-rules match that would not count toward wrestlers’ win-loss records or rankings and would not decide a title opportunity. In storyline terms, that separated the contest from the normal competitive framework: the focus was settling the feud, not earning a ranking position or championship match. AEW’s preview explains the promotion’s framing.
What Britt Baker said before and after the match
Before the event, Baker told Sports Illustrated: “We’re writing the history books instead of reading them. There is only one chance at having the first-ever women’s main event, and I get to be part of it.” Her words show how she understood the opportunity at the time: the significance was not only the stipulation, but the chance to headline Dynamite in a first for the company.

In the same interview, Baker described the match as a chance to earn respect for the division: “You can say it’s because of Thunder Rosa; you can say it’s because of me, but we are going to add a lot of respect to the women’s division this Wednesday on Dynamite. We’re going to go all out.” This was her stated aim before the match, not evidence by itself that all viewers or critics changed their view afterward.
Looking back in 2022, Baker told The Ringer: “It was [AEW’s] first-ever female main event. It brought out such a different side of me.” She recalled that the division was facing criticism and said the match felt like a turning point both for the division and for her relationship with fans. That first-person account helps explain the pressure she felt, but it does not establish that one match alone changed AEW’s women’s division.

Why call it one of the most important women’s matches in years?
The case rests on the combination of a clear AEW milestone, consequential placement on Dynamite, and a feud the promotion had developed over time—not on a verifiable cross-industry ranking. Baker’s retrospective adds context: she said the division was “really under fire” and described feeling pressure to deliver when AEW audiences were scrutinizing the company’s women’s wrestling. Her account makes the match’s stakes legible from inside the promotion, while remaining her interpretation of its impact.
Baker also said in 2021 that it was her best match of that year and argued that it helped lay a foundation for AEW’s women’s division. In comments transcribed by POST Wrestling, she went further, saying it “added legitimacy” to the division and calling it among the best matches in wrestling. Those are Baker’s assessments as a participant, not independent rankings or proof of a settled consensus.

That distinction keeps the superlative in proportion. The available evidence establishes why the match mattered to AEW and why Baker saw it as a turning point. It does not establish that it was universally considered the most important women’s match of a particular multi-year period, nor does it supply a verified audience figure or ratings increase attributable to the match.
