In Yellowstone Season 5 Part B, Beth and Jamie’s feud reaches a point where each sibling is prepared to destroy the other. Wes Bentley, who plays Jamie, offered a sympathetic but not exonerating reading of his character: he sees Jamie as unstable and lacking confidence, with family loyalty behind even some of his most frightening decisions. The ScreenRant interview also asks who Jamie—or Bentley—is most afraid of, but its accessible listing does not provide an answer, so that part remains unverified.
Why Beth and Jamie are at war
The conflict carried into Part B after Jamie publicly called for his father, John Dutton, to be impeached. Beth told Jamie their war was beginning. In its November 2024 recap, TIME described the siblings as willing to see one another killed.
The dispute grew out of both politics and family power. John had become Montana’s governor, Beth was his chief of staff, and Jamie was attorney general. TIME’s recap says Sarah Atwood influenced Jamie’s impeachment push. A ScreenRant interview preview also describes Jamie’s frustration with John’s governorship and his loss of influence over the ranch, while noting his effort to remain involved in his son’s life. Beth, enraged by the impeachment move, warns him that their war has just begun.
Those circumstances explain the stakes of the feud, but they do not make either sibling’s actions harmless. Jamie’s political move threatens John and the family’s power; Beth’s response turns that threat into an openly personal struggle.

How Wes Bentley interprets Jamie
In a November 14, 2024 interview with Adison Haager for Taste of Country, Bentley said Jamie is “so unstable and lacks confidence.” He contrasted Jamie with Beth, whom he sees as tough and straightforward, and explained that his closeness to playing Jamie makes it hard to watch him as an ordinary viewer might.
Bentley’s perspective helps explain why he can empathize with Jamie without denying the damage Jamie causes. He frames even some of Jamie’s frightening choices as actions made for the family. That is the actor’s interpretation, not proof that Jamie’s choices are justified or that the series asks viewers to excuse them.

Bentley put the point more explicitly in a later TVLine interview published November 23, 2024, saying Jamie is “He’s not just a straight-up bad guy.” He described a tangled dynamic in which people Jamie antagonizes also ask him to do the things that antagonize them. This adds nuance to Bentley’s view; it does not settle the story’s judgment of Jamie.
Who is Jamie—or Bentley—most afraid of?
The ScreenRant Plus video listing, published November 14, 2024, poses a question about who Jamie or Bentley is most afraid of. But the accessible listing and description do not include a transcript, and the matching ScreenRant article preview cuts off before Bentley’s answer. There is no verifiable answer in the available material, so naming a person would be speculation.

What Bentley said about working with Kelly Reilly
Bentley also praised Kelly Reilly, who plays Beth, as “She’s a great screen partner” in a November 12, 2024 Taste of Country interview. He recalled that Reilly worried she might accidentally hit him during an early fight-scene rehearsal. It is a story about care during stunt work, not evidence of real hostility between the actors.
