Why Can’t I See the Picture on HBO Max? Troubleshoot a Black Screen, Missing Images, or TV Display Problem

“No picture” on HBO Max (now called Max in some support materials) can mean several different things: a black video screen, missing posters, a frozen stream, or video that disappears only when you connect to a TV. The quickest fix depends on which symptom you have.

First, try another title and check whether audio plays. If video works on another device, focus on the original device or its display connection. If posters are missing but video plays, troubleshoot image loading rather than your plan or HDMI cable.

Identify what is missing

What you see Where to start
Black screen, but audio continues App or browser playback, DRM, display settings, or HDMI/HDCP connection
Black screen with no audio App loading, device software, network, account session, or a temporary service issue
Picture freezes or keeps buffering Connection stability, app state, or device performance
Posters or thumbnails are missing, but video plays App cache, browser extensions, content filtering, or image loading
Picture works on a phone or laptop but not the TV TV app, HDMI cable or port, adapter, receiver, soundbar, or HDCP compatibility
Only 4K or HDR fails Title and plan eligibility, device/display support, bandwidth, or the HDMI chain
Picture is clipped or does not fit the screen Display resolution, scaling, or aspect-ratio settings

If the issue affects every title and device, check Max’s official troubleshooting guidance and support channels for any service-wide notice. Do not repeatedly reinstall devices before checking whether the service has acknowledged a problem.

Try these quick fixes first

  1. Play a different title. This helps distinguish a title-specific problem from a general playback failure.
  2. Close and reopen Max. Fully quit the app or browser tab, then try again.
  3. Sign out and restart. Sign out, fully power off the device rather than leaving it in standby, wait about 10 seconds, turn it back on, and sign in again. This is part of Max’s official troubleshooting sequence.
  4. Update the app and device. Install available Max app and operating-system updates.
  5. Test another device or browser. If playback works there, the account and service are less likely to be the cause; investigate the device that fails.
  6. Clear the app cache or reinstall. Try this if the problem is isolated to one device. Clearing app data is more disruptive than clearing cache and may sign you out.
  7. Record any error code. Keep the exact wording before contacting support.

Fixes by device

Android phone or tablet

  1. Update Max in the Google Play Store and install any Android system update.
  2. In Settings, search for Max, open its storage controls, and choose Clear cache. The menu may be named Storage or Storage & cache, depending on Android version and device.
  3. If that does not help, use Clear storage or Clear data, then sign in again. This removes local app data.
  4. Restart the device. If the picture is still missing, uninstall and reinstall Max from the official app store.

iPhone or iPad

Update Max in the App Store and iOS or iPadOS under Settings > General > Software Update. Force-close and reopen the app, then restart the device. If the problem persists, delete and reinstall the app. iOS does not generally offer the same per-app clear-cache menu used on many Android devices.

Samsung smart TV

On some models, app storage controls are under Home > Settings > Support > Device Care > Manage Storage. Select Max and clear cache or data if those options are available. Alternatively, open Home > Apps, go to app management, remove Max, and reinstall it. Samsung menus and cache controls differ by model; not every TV exposes these options.

Computer or browser: isolate extensions and display settings

Use a current version of Chrome, Firefox, Microsoft Edge on Windows, or Safari. If video is black in a browser:

  1. Open Max in a private or incognito window. If video works there, an extension, cookie, or privacy setting may be interfering.
  2. Disable extensions temporarily, especially ad blockers, and allow third-party cookies for the service. Clear the browser cache and cookies, then retry.
  3. Turn off IP-masking tools, VPNs, or screen-capture software temporarily as a test. Max identifies these and browser add-ons among possible sources of playback or device-setup interference in its device setup guidance.
  4. Try another supported browser and restart the computer.
  5. If you use multiple monitors, test with one display connected, preferably the primary monitor. If you are connected to a TV, first verify playback on the computer screen, then check the HDMI chain below.

Max’s troubleshooting information notes that playback on max.com is limited to 1080p; displays set above 1080p may also encounter fullscreen or clipping issues. If the image is cut off rather than absent, check display scaling and resolution as well as the browser’s fullscreen mode.

If the picture disappears on a TV or monitor

If the same title plays on the source device’s own screen but not on the TV, the connection path is a strong suspect. HDMI carries both picture and copy-protection checks; an adapter, receiver, switch, or soundbar can interrupt the handshake.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Disconnect and reconnect the HDMI cable at both ends. Restart the source device and TV after reconnecting.
  2. Try a different HDMI cable and a different TV port.
  3. Connect the source directly to the TV, temporarily bypassing any AV receiver, soundbar, HDMI switch, or capture device.
  4. If you use an adapter, test without it or with a compatible adapter. Avoid unofficial or unsupported app installations and adapters.
  5. Test with just one display connected. If possible, test the source with another TV or monitor.

Requirements depend on playback mode. Max’s device-setup guidance discusses HDMI 2.0+ and HDCP 2.1+ for relevant device-setup cases. For 4K/HDR, its 4K guidance specifies a compatible 4K display and playback device, HDMI 2.0, and HDCP 2.2 across the connected chain. A setup may play ordinary HD while failing to negotiate 4K/HDR. A more expensive cable is not automatically a fix; first test another cable and a direct connection.

Check the network if playback buffers or never starts

Max publishes a minimum of 5 Mbps for HD. For 4K, its guidance calls for at least 25 Mbps and recommends 50 Mbps or more for a more consistent experience. These are thresholds, not guarantees: a connection can test fast but still be unstable, and a speed test on your phone may not reflect the TV’s Wi-Fi signal.

  • Try Ethernet if the TV or streaming device supports it, or test on another device using the same network.

A faster internet plan will not fix a corrupted app, unsupported browser, or failed HDCP handshake. If other services work and Max fails on only one device, focus on that app, device software, or display connection before changing your internet plan.

If HD works but 4K or HDR does not

4K/HDR depends on more than internet speed. The title, subscription plan, playback device, display, and every relevant part of the HDMI/HDCP chain must support the format. Check Max’s current plan and title details rather than assuming every program is available in 4K. The service selects the highest quality available automatically; you cannot manually force a resolution. A title available in 4K should also be available in HD on supported devices.

If HD plays but 4K does not, verify that the title and plan qualify, the TV and playback device support 4K/HDR, the connection meets the 4K requirements, and the source is connected directly to the display for a test. A plan change is relevant only if your current plan does not include the desired quality; it will not repair a black screen or missing poster.

If posters or thumbnails are missing but video works

That points to artwork loading or rendering, not necessarily video playback. Check whether all catalog images are missing or only one title’s art. Then close and reopen the app, sign out and back in, and update it. Clear cache where the device allows it; on a browser, test private mode, disable extensions or content filters, and clear cache and cookies. Try the website or another device. If the issue occurs only on one device, reinstalling the app is a reasonable next step.

Do not upgrade your plan to fix missing artwork. If you contact support, note the affected title, device model, operating-system and app versions, and when the images disappeared; a screenshot can help show the specific failure.

When to contact Max support

Contact support if the quick fixes fail, an error code persists, or the issue affects multiple devices without an obvious network or HDMI cause. Before you do, collect:
