Much of Freevee’s ad-supported programming now sits inside Prime Video, where U.S. customers can still find selected free movies, shows and FAST channels without a Prime membership. The important change is the destination, not the disappearance of the underlying free-with-ads model.
What Amazon actually discontinued
Amazon announced in November 2024 that it would phase out the standalone Freevee service and consolidate its programming within Prime Video. The separate Freevee app was expected to remain available until August 2025; by August 18, 2026, Prime Video—not a Freevee app—is the relevant Amazon destination. The Los Angeles Times reported Amazon’s shutdown announcement, while the USA Today/Yahoo report described the August 2025 app timeline.
| What changed | What it means |
|---|---|
| Freevee brand and standalone app | Retired as a separate destination. |
| Free, ad-supported viewing | Continues through selected Prime Video programming and FAST channels. |
| Freevee Originals | Moved into Amazon’s broader Prime Video/Amazon MGM ecosystem; availability depends on rights and territory. |
| Prime membership | Still not required for all free-with-ads programming in the United States. |
“Moved into Prime Video” also does not mean every former Freevee title remains permanently available or free. Streaming licenses expire, catalogs vary by country, and a title can appear in Prime Video search while being offered only through a rental, purchase or add-on subscription.
When Freevee became part of Prime Video
- 2019: Amazon launched the service as IMDb Freedive, later known as IMDb TV. Background on the service’s history traces that original launch.
- April 2022: IMDb TV was rebranded Amazon Freevee. Amazon described a growing originals slate, international expansion and more than 60 FAST channels. Amazon’s announcement explains the rebrand and offering.
- Early 2024: Amazon began adding limited advertising to ordinary Prime Video movies and shows in major markets, including the U.S. Amazon’s advertising announcement said the change would support continued content investment.
- November 2024: Amazon confirmed the standalone Freevee shutdown and consolidation.
- August 2025: The separate Freevee app and service were scheduled to become unavailable.
Why Amazon wanted one destination
Prime Video already contained nearly every category
Amazon has been turning Prime Video into a single storefront for Amazon MGM originals, licensed movies and series, live sports, live television, FAST channels, rentals, purchases and third-party subscriptions through Prime Video Channels. Its 2024 redesign was intended to make those different entitlement types easier to identify and browse. Amazon’s product update describes that unified interface.

Advertising reduced the old distinction
Freevee’s defining proposition was free viewing funded by advertising. Once the regular Prime Video catalog also carried limited ads, the strategic boundary between “Amazon’s ad-supported service” and “Amazon’s main video service” became less useful. The catalogs were never identical, but the commercial and technical separation was increasingly difficult for viewers to understand.
One app can expose more choices
Within Prime Video, Amazon can place free-with-ads titles alongside Prime-included shows, rentals, purchases, channels and other subscriptions. Keeping a viewer in one application creates more opportunities to present relevant content and advertising. That is a reasonable business inference from the product design, not a financial explanation Amazon formally published.

Operations could be consolidated
Reporting on the shutdown indicated that Freevee personnel and content operations would be integrated with Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios teams. Amazon did not publish a specific savings figure or head-count reduction. The Los Angeles Times coverage provides the reported organizational context.
What happens to Freevee shows, movies and originals?
- A broad selection of Freevee Originals and licensed titles is available through Prime Video.
- A title may be free with ads, included with Prime, or offered only for rental, purchase or a separate subscription.
- Rights can differ by country and can expire, so no permanent one-to-one catalog transfer was promised.
- Free live-style channels remain part of Prime Video’s FAST offering.
Check the individual title page for its current label—such as “Free with ads,” “Included with Prime,” “Rent,” “Buy” or a channel subscription. The presence of a former Freevee title in Prime Video search does not establish that it is free.

Do you need Prime to watch former Freevee content?
In the United States, Amazon says non-Prime customers can use Prime Video for selected free ad-supported programming and FAST channels, as well as paid rentals, purchases and subscriptions. Amazon’s Prime Video guide describes the current mix. Availability, prices and advertising rules can differ internationally.
| Viewer status | What is generally available |
|---|---|
| Non-Prime customer | Selected free-with-ads movies, shows and FAST channels, plus rentals, purchases and paid subscriptions. |
| Prime member | The Prime-included catalog, free-with-ads programming and other Prime Video features. Not every title in the app is included. |
| Prime Video Ultra subscriber | Eligible Prime Video content without ads, subject to exceptions for some live events, FAST and other ad-supported programming. |
Amazon lists U.S. Prime at $14.99 per month or $139 per year. It lists Prime Video Ultra at $4.99 per month, with an annual option for eligible annual Prime members. Those prices are U.S. listings and can change.

Why ads may remain after paying for Ultra
Ultra is not a universal “no advertising anywhere in Prime Video” switch. Amazon specifically says that live television and events, some ad-supported programming and certain subscriptions may still contain ads. See Amazon’s Ultra announcement for the stated exceptions. A former Freevee channel therefore may continue showing advertising even when it appears in the same app as ad-reduced Prime content.

The confirmed facts are narrower than many shutdown headlines suggest:
Best Value
- HD streaming made simple: With America’s number 1 TV streaming platform,* exploring popular apps—plus tons of free movies, shows, and live TV—is as easy as it is fun. *Based on hours streamed—Hypothesis Group
- Compact without compromises: The sleek design of Roku Streaming Stick won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, and it even powers from your TV alone, plugging into the back and staying out of sight. No wall outlet, no extra cords, no clutter.
- No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku device with one remote. Use your voice to quickly search, play entertainment, and more.
- Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
- TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.
- Amazon ended the standalone brand and app.
- Amazon’s public explanation emphasized consolidation and Prime Video’s role as a unified entertainment destination.
- Amazon did not publicly say that a particular loss figure, low-viewership result or production-cost problem caused the decision.
It is reasonable to infer that Amazon wanted less duplicated infrastructure, clearer discovery and a larger advertising ecosystem. It is not accurate to present unverified profitability claims as Amazon’s explanation. The move looks more like a change in packaging and priorities than an abandonment of free streaming.
What changed—and what did not
Changed
- There is no separate Freevee destination to open.
- Free and paid titles now share Prime Video’s interface, which can make entitlement labels harder to scan.
- The same title may have a different availability status as licensing changes.
Did not change
- Amazon retained a free, ad-supported offering.
- U.S. viewers do not need Prime for all free-with-ads Prime Video programming.
- Free viewing is not the same as access to the entire Prime catalog.
Other free streaming options
If you only want free, ad-supported viewing, compare services rather than assuming Prime is the best fit. Tubi offers on-demand titles and live channels; Pluto TV emphasizes linear-style channel surfing; The Roku Channel combines free movies, series and live channels; and Plex adds free streaming to its personal-media organization tools. Catalogs, device support, ad loads and geographic availability differ. Xumo and other device-specific FAST services provide additional alternatives.
If your television needs a streaming device, Amazon Fire TV can run Prime Video and competing apps, but buying hardware does not restore the old Freevee app.
Bottom line
Freevee disappeared as a standalone Amazon brand because Amazon consolidated its overlapping ad-supported and paid video businesses inside Prime Video. The app is gone, but free streaming is not: U.S. non-Prime viewers can still access selected free-with-ads titles and FAST channels, while Prime members receive the separate Prime-included catalog. Always check the title’s current availability label, because “in Prime Video” does not automatically mean “free,” “included with Prime” or “ad-free.”
