There is no live Tokyo 2020 stream now. The Games were postponed from 2020 and held from July 21 to August 8, 2021, with the opening ceremony on July 23 and the closing ceremony on August 8. This is an archival guide to the broadcasters that carried the event, what “free” meant in each territory, and how to look for legitimate replays today.
Tokyo 2020 is over
The event kept the “Tokyo 2020” branding even though competition took place in 2021. Any page promising to watch Tokyo 2020 “today” as a live event is using an obsolete headline. Do not confuse a replay, highlight package or archive video with a live broadcast.

| Territory | Service | What was available during Tokyo 2020 | Limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| United Kingdom | BBC and BBC iPlayer | Free coverage across BBC One, BBC Two, red-button services and online streams. | BBC did not carry every event. UK viewing was subject to BBC conditions, including the television-licence requirement. |
| United States | NBC and Peacock | Peacock offered selected free programming, including “Tokyo Live” and “Tokyo Today.” | Comprehensive event access generally required a pay-TV or streaming subscription. |
| Canada | CBC | Free online and app coverage of many events. | Rights were shared with TSN and Sportsnet, so CBC was not the sole source for every event. |
| Australia | Channel 7 and 7plus | Broad free coverage with multiple live feeds; contemporary coverage reported up to 16 concurrent feeds. | 7plus was intended for Australia and was geographically restricted elsewhere. |
| New Zealand | TVNZ and TVNZ OnDemand | Free coverage for viewers in New Zealand. | Availability depended on local rights and location. |
| Ireland | RTÉ | Listed as a free broadcaster during the Games. | Exact online availability and event selection varied. |
| Germany | ARD and ZDF | Free broadcaster coverage. | Online rights and the events shown varied by service. |
| France | TF1 | Free coverage was listed during the Games. | Coverage was not necessarily comprehensive. |
Historical broadcaster information comes from T3’s July 29, 2021 guide and What Hi-Fi?’s August 8, 2021 guide.
What “free” meant
“Free Olympics” described several different arrangements:
- Free-to-air television: no separate streaming subscription, but reception equipment and local broadcast coverage were required.
- Free online coverage: a broadcaster could require registration, a local account or acceptance of service terms.
- Free selected programming: highlights, a studio show or a limited set of live feeds, rather than every event.
- Free trial: temporary access that could become paid unless cancelled under the provider’s rules.
- Existing subscription access: included for current pay-TV customers, but not free for a new customer.
7plus was described historically as one of the broadest free options, while BBC iPlayer offered extensive online coverage without carrying every event. In the United States, Peacock’s free programming was narrower than its paid Olympic access. Discovery+ and Eurosport Player were promoted for near-complete coverage in relevant markets, but they were paid services; their 2021 prices and trial terms are not current pricing.
Could a VPN let you watch from abroad?
During the Games, guides promoted VPNs as a way for travelers to connect to a home-country broadcaster. A VPN can route traffic through another region, but it is not a content-rights product and does not guarantee access.

- Streaming services may detect and block VPN or proxy addresses.
- A broadcaster may require a local account, payment method, television licence or residency check.
- Using a VPN to bypass a geographic restriction can conflict with a service’s terms, and laws differ by country.
- A VPN cannot make a paid subscription free or restore an expired event archive.
- VPN encryption can be useful on public Wi-Fi, independently of streaming.
If you are traveling during a future Olympics, first check the official broadcaster for the country where you are physically located. If you intend to use an existing home subscription abroad, read its travel and territorial rules and keep a legal local option available. Do not treat changing VPN servers as a guaranteed or necessarily permitted workaround.
How to find Tokyo 2020 footage now
- Open the official Olympics.com Tokyo 2020 videos page and search for the sport, athlete, event or ceremony.
- Check the relevant broadcaster’s official archive or video section. BBC iPlayer, CBC Sports, 7plus and TVNZ services can change their catalogues and territorial access.
- Prefer an identified replay, highlight or results page over a page labelled simply “live stream.”
- Use the broadcaster’s official app when a browser page reports a playback or location error.
Current archive availability must be checked at the time you read this; rights and catalogues change. Useful official starting points include BBC iPlayer, CBC Sports, 7plus, TVNZ and the Olympic video archive.
Historical paid options in the United States
For broader U.S. coverage in 2021, viewers used NBC-related pay-TV services and platforms such as Peacock, Sling TV and Fubo. The historical guide also discussed free trials and monthly prices, but those figures were specific to 2021 and should not be used as current offers. A paid live-TV bundle is not a sensible way to obtain Tokyo 2020 footage now unless you have a separate reason to subscribe.

“Unavailable in my country”
The cause may be territorial rights, an event-specific restriction, VPN detection, an account-country mismatch, an expired archive or an outage. Turn off a VPN or proxy, confirm that the broadcaster owns the event, sign in with the correct account, try the official app and check the service schedule or status page. The lawful fallback is the official rights-holder in your current location.

“Free” becomes a payment request
Check whether the offer was only highlights, a limited programme, a trial, free television rather than online video, or access for existing subscribers. Do not enter payment details unless you understand the renewal terms.
The VPN is connected but playback is blocked
VPN blocking is common. A different connection may not help and could still conflict with the broadcaster’s terms. Use the official local service instead; a VPN cannot revive a discontinued live feed.
The video is delayed
Streaming latency, a local broadcast delay, a replay setting, scheduling or time-zone differences can all explain the gap. Use the programme’s stated date and time zone rather than “today” or “tonight.”
Safety and legality
Avoid unofficial Olympic streams, mirror sites and fake video players. They can carry malicious advertising, credential-stealing forms, deceptive downloads or unauthorized rebroadcasts. Official Olympic and broadcaster pages are the safer route for replays, highlights and results.
