Camp Crystal Lake is fictional, but the primary real-world location used for the 1980 film Friday the 13th is Camp No-Be-Bo-Sco, a real Scout camp in Hardwick Township, Warren County, New Jersey. The camp uses a Blairstown mailing address, which causes much of the confusion, but its property is not in Blairstown. The original movie filmed its cabins, lakefront, dining hall and boathouse there. The 2026 Crystal Lake series is a separate case: because No-Be-Bo-Sco does not permit filming, its production used Camp Ocawasin in West Milford, New Jersey, and recreated the familiar boathouse.
Where is the real Camp Crystal Lake from Friday the 13th?
The camp seen in the 1980 film is Camp No-Be-Bo-Sco in Hardwick Township, in Warren County, northwestern New Jersey. It is a functioning Scout camp operated by the Northern New Jersey Council, Scouting America, rather than a theme park or a permanently public film set.
Crystal Lake is the fictional name used by the film. No-Be-Bo-Sco supplied the recognizable physical environment: wooded cabins, the waterfront, the dining hall and the boathouse. The New Jersey Motion Picture & Television Commission lists the production as taking place at Camp No-Be-Bo-Sco, Hope, Freehold and Blairstown, while Smithsonian describes the Hardwick camp as the setting for the movie’s closing lake sequence.

The camp is about 14 miles from Blairstown, according to Radio Times. That short distance, combined with the postal address, is why many location guides describe it simply as being “in Blairstown.” Geographically, that shorthand is wrong.

Is Camp No-Be-Bo-Sco in Blairstown or Hardwick?
The physical camp property is in Hardwick Township. Its mailing address is Blairstown, and the site is also associated with the nearby Stillwater area, but the camp’s official FAQ states that none of its property is in Blairstown.
Why the address creates confusion
Postal towns do not always match municipal boundaries. A Blairstown mailing address identifies the delivery area; it does not establish that the land lies inside Blairstown Township. For a film-location itinerary, treat Hardwick as the municipality and Blairstown as the nearby town connected to the address and to several scenes in the movie.
Where is it in New Jersey?
Hardwick Township is in Warren County in the state’s northwestern corner, near the Pennsylvania border. The setting is rural and wooded, which helped the production present the camp as an isolated summer facility even though town and roadside material was filmed in other communities.

How much of the 1980 movie was filmed at the camp?
The official Crystal Lake Tours FAQ says that more than 80 percent of the movie was filmed on the Hardwick camp property. That is the camp operator’s published figure, not a statistic attributed to the state film commission. It indicates how much of the film’s identity comes from No-Be-Bo-Sco rather than from a studio backlot.
The property allowed the filmmakers to keep the visual geography coherent. Scenes involving campers moving between cabins, the waterfront, the dining hall and the boathouse could be staged within one large location. The surrounding communities then supplied the off-site material needed to establish roads, businesses and the nearby town.

Which parts of the movie’s setting came from Camp No-Be-Bo-Sco?
No-Be-Bo-Sco provided the elements viewers usually mean when they refer to “Camp Crystal Lake.” The cabins establish the counselors’ living area; the lakefront supplies the central visual motif; and the dining hall and boathouse anchor several memorable sequences.
The cabins and camp buildings
The camp’s working buildings gave the film a believable youth-camp layout instead of a collection of unrelated locations. Their age and arrangement are part of the movie’s atmosphere, but the site remains an active Scout facility rather than a preserved movie set.
The lake and closing sequence
Smithsonian’s account places the film’s closing lake sequence at the Hardwick camp. That scene is one reason fans often imagine “Crystal Lake” as a specific, permanently named place. In reality, the fictional name belongs to the screenplay; the landscape came from the New Jersey camp.
The boathouse
The boathouse became one of the production’s most identifiable structures. Its appearance is important enough that the later television production recreated it when it could not film at No-Be-Bo-Sco.
What other New Jersey locations were used for Friday the 13th?
The New Jersey Motion Picture & Television Commission lists Hope, Freehold and Blairstown alongside Camp No-Be-Bo-Sco as filming locations. Those places supplied scenes outside the camp property, including town and roadside environments.

This explains why a search for “where Friday the 13th was filmed” returns several New Jersey communities. They are not competing answers to the camp question. No-Be-Bo-Sco is the principal camp location, while Hope, Freehold and Blairstown represent the broader production footprint.
Can you visit the real Camp Crystal Lake?
Not as an ordinary walk-in attraction. Camp No-Be-Bo-Sco is private property and an active youth camp. Its official FAQ says visitors are not permitted outside official tour dates.
How legitimate visits work
Sanctioned access is provided through Crystal Lake Tours, organized by camp alumni. These events are the appropriate way to see the location, and schedules, entry rules and any age or photography restrictions should be checked on the official tour pages before making travel plans.
Why trespassing is a serious problem
The camp continues to serve Scouts, so unannounced visitors can interfere with youth programming, staff work and site safety. Do not enter through gates, walk onto trails or approach buildings when a tour is not operating. A film connection does not convert private property into public land.
What to expect from a tour
A sanctioned event is a managed location experience, not a guarantee that every structure will look exactly as it did in 1980. Camp buildings may be maintained, renovated or used for current programs. The purpose of the tour is to interpret the film location while respecting the camp’s present-day operation.

Is the 2026 Crystal Lake series filmed at the same camp?
No. The 2026 series used Camp Ocawasin in West Milford, New Jersey, for its camp scenes. It did not film at Camp No-Be-Bo-Sco.
| Production | Camp location used | Municipality | Access context | Visual continuity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Friday the 13th (1980) | Camp No-Be-Bo-Sco | Hardwick Township, Warren County | Private Scout camp; public entry is limited to official tour dates | Original cabins, waterfront, dining hall and boathouse |
| Crystal Lake (2026 series) | Camp Ocawasin | West Milford, New Jersey | Used as a production location for the series | Original boathouse recreated for the show |
Why the series changed locations
Showrunner Brad Caleb Kane told Radio Times: “We scouted that camp to film in, but they don’t allow filming, so we couldn’t actually film at that camp.” The production therefore had to find another New Jersey camp and reproduce the visual element most strongly associated with the original.
When a viewer recognizes a location in the series, that recognition should not be treated as proof that the camera returned to No-Be-Bo-Sco. The two productions share a fictional setting and a regional connection, but they used different physical camps.

“Camp Crystal Lake” is a story name. Camp No-Be-Bo-Sco is the real institution whose grounds appear in the 1980 film. The real camp opened in 1927 and covers more than 380 acres, according to Crystal Lake Tours’ current site.

How should fans plan a Camp Crystal Lake location trip?
- Start with the official tour calendar. Check Crystal Lake Tours for sanctioned dates before choosing travel dates. Ordinary public access is not available.
- Use the correct geography. Record Hardwick Township as the camp’s municipality, with Blairstown as the mailing town and nearby film-related community.
- Separate camp scenes from town scenes. Hope, Freehold and Blairstown are part of the original production’s wider New Jersey footprint, but they are not substitutes for the camp property.
- Follow event instructions. Observe parking, photography, age, timing and building-access rules issued for the specific tour.
- Respect current camp activity. Leave when the event ends and never return independently to explore private grounds.
A trip built around the official event can combine film history with an understanding of how a working Scout camp differs from a preserved studio attraction. The setting’s authenticity comes from that continuing use, not from freezing the property in its 1980 appearance.
Why does the location still matter to Friday the 13th fans?
The film’s New Jersey geography gives its fictional story a tangible map. A viewer can connect the invented name “Crystal Lake” to a real camp in Warren County, then distinguish the nearby communities used for roads and town scenes. That combination of a real, functioning facility and a fictional narrative is what makes the location unusually evocative.
It also illustrates why location claims need municipal precision. Saying “Blairstown” is understandable because of the mailing address and nearby scenes, but saying “Hardwick Township” identifies the land where the central camp material was filmed. For the 2026 series, the same precision prevents a second error: West Milford’s Camp Ocawasin is the series stand-in, not the original movie camp.

What county is the original Camp Crystal Lake location in?
Camp No-Be-Bo-Sco is in Warren County, in northwestern New Jersey near the Pennsylvania border. The county designation is useful when distinguishing the original site from the 2026 series location in West Milford.
Was the lake in the movie given the name Crystal Lake in real life?
No. “Crystal Lake” is the fictional name used by the story. The film used the real camp’s lakefront, but the evidence identifying the screen name does not establish that the natural feature itself bears that name.
Why do some maps list Blairstown for Camp No-Be-Bo-Sco?
Blairstown is the camp’s mailing address and is about 14 miles away, so mapping and travel listings often use it as a reference point. The camp’s own FAQ clarifies that its property is not inside Blairstown.
Can I visit the camp when no horror tour is scheduled?
No. The facility remains private and active, and the published visitor policy bars entry outside official tour dates. Fans should wait for a sanctioned Crystal Lake Tours event rather than attempting an independent visit.
