Updated August 10, 2026. The original Beach Boys were Brian Wilson, Dennis Wilson, Carl Wilson, Mike Love and Al Jardine. Of those five founders, only Mike Love and Al Jardine are alive today. Brian Wilson died on June 11, 2025; Dennis Wilson died on December 28, 1983; and Carl Wilson died on February 6, 1998.
The name The Beach Boys is still used for Mike Love’s licensed touring act, but it is not the original lineup. Love remains the only founding member regularly performing in that road band. Al Jardine continues to perform separately with Al Jardine & The Pet Sounds Band. Bruce Johnston left the regular touring lineup in March 2026, and Nashville vocalist Chris Cron took over his touring position.

Who were the original Beach Boys?
The Beach Boys formed in Hawthorne, California, in 1961. The original five-member lineup consisted of brothers Brian Wilson, Dennis Wilson and Carl Wilson, their cousin Mike Love, and family friend Al Jardine.

Brian became the group’s principal songwriter, producer and musical architect. Mike supplied many of the band’s lead vocals and lyrics. Carl developed into a major lead vocalist and guitarist, while Dennis played drums and contributed important songs of his own. Jardine played rhythm guitar and sang lead on “Help Me, Rhonda.”
The lineup changed almost immediately. When Jardine temporarily left in 1962, guitarist David Marks joined and played on early albums including Surfin’ Safari, Surfin’ U.S.A., Surfer Girl and Little Deuce Coupe. Jardine later returned, making Marks an early member rather than one of the original five founders.

Bruce Johnston joined in 1965 to perform on the road and help fill the musical space created by Brian’s withdrawal. In the early 1970s, South African musicians Ricky Fataar and Blondie Chaplin also joined the band and appeared on albums and tours.
The surviving founding members
Mike Love
Mike Love is alive and actively touring in 2026. He leads the group currently billed as The Beach Boys, with dates listed on his official website and the band’s touring site.
Love is the only founding member regularly present in that particular touring unit. That wording matters: Al Jardine is also an original Beach Boy and is still performing, but he tours separately. Therefore, “Mike Love is the only original Beach Boy still touring with The Beach Boys” is accurate; “Mike Love is the only surviving Beach Boy” is not.
The 2026 touring act includes supporting musicians such as Tim Bonhomme, Christian Love, Brian “Ike” Eichenberger, Randy Leago, Keith Hubacher, John Wedemeyer and Jon Bolton. Concert personnel can change, and Chris Cron has taken over the principal touring position previously occupied by Bruce Johnston.

Al Jardine
Al Jardine remains active as a singer and guitarist. His current official project is Al Jardine & The Pet Sounds Band, a separate act from Mike Love’s Beach Boys touring band.
The Pet Sounds Band is built largely from musicians associated with Brian Wilson’s former touring ensemble. Its performances combine Beach Boys hits, deeper catalog songs, selections from Pet Sounds, material from The Beach Boys Love You and rarities. Jardine’s official website, promotional biography and band page document the project and its 2026 activity in the United States and Australia.
The lineup has included musicians such as Matt Jardine, Darian Sahanaja, Rob Bonfiglio and Gary Griffin. Jardine’s current releases page also lists the 2025 three-track release Islands in the Sun, including “Highway 101 (Rosarita Beach Cafe)” and “My Plane Leaves Tomorrow (Au Revoir).”

Older articles may describe Jardine as performing with an “Endless Summer Band” or as part of the Beach Boys. For a 2026 update, the clearest official branding is Al Jardine & The Pet Sounds Band.
David Marks
David Marks was an important early guitarist, but he was not one of the original five founders. He joined when Jardine temporarily departed and played on several formative Beach Boys records. Marks later returned for a period in the 1990s and participated in the five-member 2012 reunion era involving Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine, Bruce Johnston and himself.

Marks maintains a lower public profile than Love or Jardine. The Surf City Allstars tour page lists appearances featuring “Original Beach Boy David Marks,” indicating occasional live activity. He also participated in promotion for the 2024 documentary The Beach Boys.
There is no consistently updated first-party schedule showing Marks as a full-time member of either current touring act. The fairest description is that he remains alive and has limited, occasional public or live activity documented through 2026—not that he has disappeared from music or has been definitively retired.
The deceased Wilson brothers
Brian Wilson
Brian Wilson died on June 11, 2025, at the age of 82. His family announced his death, but a cause was not initially disclosed; it should not be presented as confirmed without an authoritative source. The Associated Press obituary and Los Angeles Times obituary provide the main death-reporting context.
Wilson was far more than a member of the band. He was its central creative force: principal songwriter, producer, bassist, keyboardist and arranger. His studio work transformed the Beach Boys from a successful surf-pop group into one of the most influential recording artists of the 1960s.
Brian was not a regular member of Mike Love’s touring band for many years before his death, and his death should not be described as him simply “leaving the Beach Boys.” He remained central to the group’s identity and participated in the 2012 reunion, while later pursuing a major solo career.
His music remains active through his official estate and catalog. The 2026 Pet Sounds 60th-anniversary campaign and the archival collection We Gotta Groove: The Brother Studio Years continue to present previously released and archival work. The six-disc set explores Wilson’s 1976–77 Brother Studio sessions, includes a remastered Love You, material from the 15 Big Ones sessions and the first official release of the Adult/Child sessions. Updates appear on Brian Wilson’s official site.
Dennis Wilson
Dennis Wilson died by drowning on December 28, 1983, aged 39. He was the only genuine surfer among the three Wilson brothers, but his importance to the Beach Boys extended far beyond that biographical detail.
Dennis was the group’s founding drummer and an increasingly distinctive songwriter and vocalist. His solo album Pacific Ocean Blue is widely regarded as a major work, while songs such as “Forever” and “Little Bird” demonstrate his individual voice within the Beach Boys catalog.
Carl Wilson
Carl Wilson died on February 6, 1998, aged 51, from complications related to lung cancer. Some secondary articles give February 7, but the stronger current references identify February 6 as the date.
Carl was a founding guitarist and vocalist who became the band’s musical leader as Brian’s participation declined. His singing is inseparable from recordings such as “God Only Knows” and “Good Vibrations,” among many others.
Carl’s death was a major turning point. After 1998, the surviving members’ touring arrangements and competing uses of related band names became especially complicated, eventually producing the modern split between Mike Love’s touring act and Al Jardine’s separate project.

What happened to Bruce Johnston?
Bruce Johnston left the regular Beach Boys touring lineup in March 2026 after roughly six decades associated with the group. He joined in 1965, initially helping replace Brian Wilson on the road, and became a vocalist, keyboardist, bassist and songwriter in his own right.
Johnston wrote or co-wrote Beach Boys-associated songs including “Disney Girls,” “Deirdre” and “Tears in the Morning.” During a period away from the group, he also wrote “I Write the Songs,” later a major hit for Barry Manilow.
According to Rolling Stone, Johnston wanted to focus on songwriting, recording and speaking engagements. He did not characterize the move as necessarily permanent and left open the possibility of special appearances, including planned Hollywood Bowl appearances.

Who replaced Bruce Johnston?
Nashville vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Chris Cron took Johnston’s touring position in 2026. Cron is a current touring member of Mike Love’s Beach Boys act, not a founding member, classic-era songwriter or original Beach Boy.
Cron previously fronted Pet Sounds Live, a tribute group. That band is separate from The Pet Sounds Band, Al Jardine’s current touring group. Cron’s work with Pet Sounds Live helped lead to his recruitment by Love’s Beach Boys act, according to Rolling Stone.
Ricky Fataar and Blondie Chaplin
Ricky Fataar
Ricky Fataar joined the Beach Boys in the early 1970s with Blondie Chaplin. The South African drummer and guitarist left the group in 1974 after appearing on the period’s albums and tours.
Fataar later became closely associated with Bonnie Raitt as a drummer, producer and session musician. Bonnie Raitt’s official site credits him on the 2022 album Just Like That… and describes his long-running role in her musical operation.
The available public evidence supports saying that Fataar is most recently documented in connection with Bonnie Raitt and session work. It does not support claiming a specific 2026 tour schedule without newer primary confirmation.

Blondie Chaplin
Blondie Chaplin was a South African singer, guitarist and songwriter who joined alongside Fataar in the early 1970s. He appeared on Carl and the Passions – “So Tough” and Holland.
After leaving the Beach Boys, Chaplin worked with artists including the Rolling Stones, Bonnie Raitt and Brian Wilson. He appeared on Wilson’s 2015 album No Pier Pressure and toured with him during the 2016 Pet Sounds anniversary shows.
Chaplin remains associated with music, but there is no clearly maintained 2026 official schedule placing him in either of the current Beach Boys-related touring acts.
Are the current Beach Boys the same as the classic lineup?
No. The phrase “The Beach Boys” now refers to several related but distinct things:
- The historical band: the recording and performing group founded in 1961 by Brian, Dennis and Carl Wilson, Mike Love and Al Jardine.
- Mike Love’s current touring act: the licensed group performing under the name The Beach Boys, with Love as the only founding member regularly on the road.
- Al Jardine & The Pet Sounds Band: Jardine’s separate member-led project, featuring musicians connected to Brian Wilson’s touring tradition.
- Historical and later members: David Marks, Bruce Johnston, Ricky Fataar and Blondie Chaplin, whose membership belongs to different periods rather than the current Mike Love touring lineup.
- Touring substitutes and backing musicians: performers such as Glen Campbell, Jeffrey Foskett, Brian Eichenberger and Chris Cron, who should not automatically be presented as founding or classic Beach Boys.
Why can Mike Love tour under the Beach Boys name?
The short answer is a licensing arrangement. Brother Records, Inc. controls relevant Beach Boys intellectual-property interests and trademark arrangements. In 1998, Brother Records granted Mike Love a license to use the Beach Boys name for live performances.

The arrangement became contentious after Al Jardine toured under related names following the 1998 split. A Ninth Circuit opinion discusses the licensing history and the use of the trademark in live performances. See the Ninth Circuit opinion and the additional federal appellate record.
This explains why a band can legally be billed as The Beach Boys even when Brian Wilson, Al Jardine, David Marks and Bruce Johnston are not regular members of the road unit. The legal right to use a name and the historically meaningful lineup are separate questions. The licensing arrangement does not prove that Mike Love is “the real” Beach Boys, nor does it make the current act illegitimate.
What can fans see and hear in 2026?
Mike Love’s Beach Boys
Look for tickets billed as The Beach Boys or listed through Mike Love’s official tour page. These shows feature Love and his current supporting musicians. Neither Brian Wilson nor Al Jardine is part of the regular road band, and Bruce Johnston is no longer a regular 2026 touring member.
Al Jardine & The Pet Sounds Band
Jardine’s shows are listed under Al Jardine & The Pet Sounds Band. They offer a different emphasis, drawing on Pet Sounds, Beach Boys hits, rarities and deeper album material, with musicians linked to Brian Wilson’s former touring band.

What to check before buying a concert ticket
- A ticket labeled The Beach Boys generally refers to Mike Love’s licensed touring act.
- A ticket labeled Al Jardine & The Pet Sounds Band refers to Jardine’s separate group.
- Neither regular 2026 act contains Brian Wilson.
- Bruce Johnston may appear at special events, but he is no longer a regular touring member.
- Supporting musicians can change, so check the artist and venue listing shortly before the show.
- Chris Cron is a current touring replacement and vocal specialist, not a historic Beach Boys member.
Can fans see Mike Love and Al Jardine together?
They are not regular members of the same 2026 touring act. Love leads The Beach Boys, while Jardine leads The Pet Sounds Band. Special-event appearances and anniversary programming can change, so fans hoping to see both should check their official schedules and the venue’s final listing rather than assume that a Beach Boys-branded concert includes both men.
The practical answer
The original Beach Boys lineup is gone, but the music remains active through two separate surviving-member-led projects. Mike Love continues touring as The Beach Boys under the group’s established licensing arrangement, while Al Jardine performs with The Pet Sounds Band in a project closely connected to Brian Wilson’s musical legacy. Brian, Dennis and Carl Wilson remain essential to the history and recordings of the group, even though none can appear on today’s regular stage.
