The Act of Killing is the strongest current poll-backed answer. Joshua Oppenheimer’s 2012 film ranks first in the International Documentary Association’s 2026 Greatest Docs of the 21st Century Top 25. That makes it a defensible winner—not an objective or permanent verdict. The ranking reflects 302 submitted ballots, 877 eligible votes and 434 titles from a documentary-community electorate, so your own choice may reasonably differ.
What did the International Documentary Association poll measure?
The IDA asked each voter to select three documentaries released from 2000 through 2025, with an optional explanation. Its 2026 results represent the preferences of the people who voted and the films they had access to, not a scientific quality score. The organization explicitly cautions readers against treating the ranking as a final verdict on documentary excellence.

That distinction matters because a poll can show influence, admiration and visibility without proving that one film is universally better than every other documentary. Treat the list as a snapshot of current critical values and use the comparison criteria below to make your own vote.
Why is The Act of Killing ranked first?
The film asks former Indonesian genocide perpetrators to stage versions of their crimes in the genres they admire, forcing them to confront themselves through performance. The IDA describes its method as combining “the hard evidence of experience with epic flourishes of imagination.” Its case rests on formal risk joined to historical and ethical confrontation, rather than on subject importance alone.

Filmmaker Kirsten Johnson summarized that ambition by writing: “The Act of Killing dares to attempt the impossible.” The result is intentionally unsettling: its method makes the act of representing violence part of the argument about memory, denial and power.

Which documentary should you watch first?
Choose by what you want from the experience rather than by rank alone:

- Historical and political urgency: The Act of Killing, I Am Not Your Negro, Citizenfour, No Other Land and The Fog of War examine systems, power and collective memory.
- Formal invention: Cameraperson, Waltz With Bashir, Leviathan and Hale County This Morning This Evening make the act of seeing part of their subject.
- Personal intimacy and family memory: Stories We Tell, Time, Dick Johnson Is Dead and Minding the Gap center lived relationships.
- Narrative momentum and accessibility: O.J.: Made in America, Man on Wire and Bowling for Columbine provide especially strong entry points for general audiences.
How does this ranking differ from other “best documentary” lists?
Different methods produce different winners. Rotten Tomatoes’ 2022 guide, which requires at least 100 critics’ reviews, puts Man on Wire first at 100%, followed by Summer of Soul at 99% and I Am Not Your Negro at 99%. That is a review-score consensus, not a vote about long-term artistic or historical importance.
The British Film Institute’s Sight & Sound documentary poll gathered nominations from 237 critics, curators and academics on a 2014 page updated in 2019. It surveys documentary history across eras; roughly one in five films in its Top 50 were made since 2000. The IDA poll is a closer match for a 21st-century-only question, but its narrower scope and voter pool still shape the outcome.

How should you vote for the best documentary?
- Select up to three films released from 2000 through 2025. This matches the IDA poll’s eligibility window.
- Decide what “best” means to you. Weigh historical urgency, formal invention, intimacy, accessibility or another standard before choosing.
- Explain one choice. A short reason makes the vote more useful than a title alone, especially when two films excel in different ways.
- Separate influence from personal enjoyment. A difficult film can be artistically important even if it is not your easiest or most pleasurable watch.
Can you own The Act of Killing?
Yes. A Drafthouse Films/Cinedigm announcement records DVD and Blu-ray editions released January 7, 2014, with theatrical material and a longer director’s cut. HMV has listed the film in both DVD and Blu-ray formats. Availability, seller, price and region can change, so check those details before purchasing.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is The Act of Killing definitively the greatest documentary?
No single poll can settle that permanently. The current IDA result makes it the leading answer for this specific 21st-century, documentary-community vote, while other measures and your own criteria may point to a different film. If you want one place to start, watch the winner, then test it against the alternatives that match your interests.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a documentary released in 2000 be included in the 21st-century vote?
Yes. The IDA’s eligibility window begins in 2000 and runs through 2025, so films from the first year of the century qualify alongside recent releases.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

The IDA ranking and Rotten Tomatoes guide measure different things. Summer of Soul appears in Rotten Tomatoes’ review-score top three but is not among the 25 titles listed by the IDA poll.
Is O.J.: Made in America one film or a series?
The IDA treats O.J.: Made in America as a single eligible documentary title for its ranking, regardless of how viewers encounter its chaptered long-form structure.
What makes a poll result vulnerable to bias?
Voters can only nominate films they have seen, and distribution, language, festival access and professional networks affect that visibility. The IDA acknowledges that circulation and access shape which titles reach its ballot.
