The DCU’s announced Batman film is The Brave and the Bold, a Batman-and-Robin story framed as a father-and-son tale and inspired by Grant Morrison’s comics. In August 2026, DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn said the project was “in no way on hold.” That confirms it remains in development; it does not confirm a finished script, production start, cast, or release date.
What is the DCU’s Batman project?
DC announced The Brave and the Bold in January 2023 as part of the DCU, its connected screen universe. The studio described it as the introduction of that universe’s Batman and Robin, with an unusual father-and-son dynamic inspired by Grant Morrison’s comic run. DC’s announcement establishes the project and its premise, but does not provide a release date or cast.
The title belongs to DC’s first announced slate, Chapter One: “Gods and Monsters.” At the time, co-chair Peter Safran said the timeline would have flexibility and that DC would not put a project into production before its script was right. That approach helps explain why an announced project should not be treated as a film with a fixed schedule. DC’s account of the slate does not set a current production timetable for this film.
Is The Brave and the Bold still happening?
Yes: the latest status established by the cited reporting is that it is not on hold. On August 27, 2026, GamesRadar+ reported Gunn’s clarification: “It doesn’t sound like something Andy would have said but the project is in no way on hold.” The same report recalled Gunn’s earlier comment that a screenwriter was working on the script. GamesRadar+’s August 2026 report supports “still in development,” not a claim that the screenplay is complete or filming is imminent.

Who is playing the DCU’s Batman, and when will the film come out?
No actor or release date is established by DC’s announcement or the August 2026 status report. The film’s lead casting, production start, and premiere date therefore remain unconfirmed in those sources. Do not treat dates or casting tied to another Batman project as details for The Brave and the Bold.
Is this the same Batman as in other DC films or comics?
The Brave and the Bold is announced as the Batman story for the connected DCU. DC also has Batman stories in other film projects and in its comics, but a shared character name does not make every project part of the same continuity. The announcement identifies this film’s DCU role; it does not establish that it follows a particular current comic series.

DC’s live catalog lists current comic lines including Batman (2025–) and Absolute Batman (2024–). Those listings show that the comics are being published, not that either is the film’s source continuity. DC’s comics catalog is a catalog, not a statement connecting those series to the movie.

For a separate Batman read, DC lists Batman Vol. 1: Daylight, collecting issues #1–6, written by Matt Fraction and illustrated by Jorge Jiménez. DC gives the collected edition an on-sale date of June 2, 2026, a U.S. list price of $29.99, and a Teen rating. It is a comic recommendation, not a stated tie-in to The Brave and the Bold; price and availability may vary by retailer. See DC’s product listing.
