He also said that seeing “Emilio Sheen” on his first headshot simply did not feel like him.
Estevez wanted to build his own professional identity
In a 2011 interview with The Daily Beast, Estevez recalled that agents and managers advised him to adopt Sheen, arguing that the name was an established brand and could make his career easier. His answer was: “Well how about creating a new path and doing my own thing?”
The choice was personal as well as professional. When he saw “Emilio Sheen” printed on his first headshot, he recalled thinking, “That’s not me!”
He had used Estevez long before his acting career
Estevez had given an earlier explanation in a Washington Post interview published June 26, 1985. He said, “That’s why I won’t use the family name,” and added that through high school “it was always Estevez.” His comments connect the professional decision to a name that already felt like his own, not just to a calculation about career advantage.

Martin Sheen supported his son’s decision
Martin Sheen, who was born Ramón Estévez and adopted Sheen as his professional name, said he was proud of Emilio for keeping Estevez: “I was so proud of him, man. I begged him not to change it,” he told The Daily Beast in 2011.
The family made different professional name choices
The surname choices were not the same across the family. A Guardian profile identifies Martin as Ramón Estévez by birth, Emilio as professionally known by his family surname, and Emilio’s brother Carlos as professionally known as Charlie Sheen.

- The Breakfast Club
A 2011 interview with SBS discusses the family’s Spanish roots in connection with Estevez’s film The Way. That context is relevant to his heritage, but it does not establish that the film or his roots were the sole reason he kept the name.

Estevez’s own accounts point to two connected reasons: he preferred to create a separate professional path rather than rely on his father’s name, and “Emilio Sheen” did not feel like his identity. His father encouraged the choice. Those interviews establish what the two men said; they do not demonstrate a broader, measured effect of surnames on actors’ careers.
