At his first stand-up show after hosting the 2024 Golden Globes, Jo Koy called Hollywood celebrities “marshmallows” and asked whether people could laugh at themselves. He made the remarks during a January 12 set at Stifel Theatre in St. Louis, while also urging the crowd to accept failure and take risks.
What Jo Koy said about “soft” celebrities
Less than a week after hosting the Golden Globes on January 7, Koy returned to stand-up in St. Louis. The Los Angeles Times reported that he described the celebrity audience as “marshmallows”:
“Lotta marshmallows, man — they’re delicious, but goddamn, they’re soft.”
He then said he recognized that things were changing but challenged people to laugh at themselves:

The Los Angeles Times reported those comments as part of the same set. Koy also said he suspected many people in St. Louis had not watched his Globes performance and that he was glad of it. He praised the crowd as people who listened and understood that “we’re not all out to attack each other,” contrasting that experience with Los Angeles.
How the St. Louis crowd differed from the Globes room
Koy’s comments framed a contrast between two specific settings: the celebrity-filled Golden Globes ceremony and the St. Louis comedy audience. His remarks reflected his interpretation of how those audiences responded; they do not establish what celebrities or viewers generally think about comedy. The Entertainment Tonight account described the Globes performance as receiving mostly negative reviews.

What Koy said about the Golden Globes performance
After the ceremony, Koy acknowledged that hosting was different from stand-up and described the night as an off one. In comments quoted by Entertainment Tonight, he said: “Hosting is a tough gig. Yes, I am a stand-up comic but that hosting position, it’s a different style. I had an off night … I wanted to give a little bit more of me and I just fell a little short.”
The Los Angeles Times reported that Koy said he and the writers had only a handful of days to prepare, that the material was rewritten up to showtime, and that he had not been able to try it onstage before the broadcast. In a later interview with the Los Angeles Times, as recounted by The Independent, Koy said he regretted blaming the writers, calling it a “rookie move,” and again noted that he had not tested the material before a live audience.
