Joe Don Baker, whose performance as real-life Tennessee sheriff Buford Pusser made Walking Tall (1973) his signature film, died on May 7, 2025, at age 89. He also appeared in three James Bond films, moving from villain Brad Whitaker to CIA ally Jack Wade.
Walking Tall made Baker a leading man
Baker’s defining role came in the 1973 film Walking Tall, in which he portrayed Buford Pusser, a Tennessee sheriff. The part placed Baker at the center of a film based on a real person and remains the performance most closely associated with his career.
His screen work was broader than that breakout. Across roughly half a century, Baker appeared in dozens of films and television shows, taking both leading and supporting roles. He was particularly suited to characters on either side of the law, a range that would surface again in his Bond appearances.
His Bond roles shifted from enemy to ally
Baker appeared in three films in the James Bond series. His first Bond role was as Brad Whitaker, the villain in The Living Daylights (1987). Years later, he returned to the series as Jack Wade, a CIA agent who assists Bond in two Pierce Brosnan films.

| GoldenEye | 1995 | Jack Wade, CIA agent and Bond ally |
| Tomorrow Never Dies | 1997 | Jack Wade, CIA agent and Bond ally |
The progression from Whitaker to Wade gave Baker two distinct places in the franchise: first as an adversary, then as a recurring ally. EON Productions, the Bond series’ official company, confirmed his death and his role in The Living Daylights in its tribute.

Death and legacy
Baker died at an assisted-living facility in Los Angeles, according to The Washington Post. His death was reported by the newspaper and EON Productions as May 7, 2025; both gave his age as 89.
Walking Tall remains the clearest entry point to Baker’s work, but his filmography resists a single-role summary. The Bond films offer a compact illustration of his versatility: the same actor who embodied a forceful adversary in one era returned years later as a familiar, wry ally.
