A producer laughed, Kimmel kept repeating the line, and the two eventually turned it into a series of staged comic confrontations. Their public accounts describe a running gag, not a documented personal dispute.
How Kimmel says the joke began
In a 2013 interview with Terry Gross on Fresh Air, Kimmel recalled feeling that one episode had gone badly. He said the guests were “a couple of reality stars or something” and that, at the end of the show, he improvised an apology to Damon for having run out of time. He was trying to amuse a producer standing beside him. When the producer laughed, Kimmel began using the line night after night.
Kimmel said Damon’s name came to mind because he wanted an A-list star the show would never actually bump. “Matt Damon was just the first name that popped into my head,” he explained. “I just was trying to think of an A-list star and somebody that we absolutely would not bump if he was on the show.” Kimmel also said, “And so I just started doing it every night to amuse him.” Hear Kimmel’s account on Fresh Air.
What Damon remembered—and where the accounts differ
A 2017 Washington Post retrospective quoted Damon recalling a 2011 interview with Parade. Damon remembered the disappointing episode’s guests as “a ventriloquist and a guy in a monkey suit.” He described the joke as gallows humor between Kimmel and the producer, and said he was not initially part of it. In his recollection, “But it made us laugh, so we started doing it every night. I have no idea why I said you; it could have been anybody.” Read the Washington Post retrospective.

The two men remembered the original guests differently, but the essential sequence matches: Kimmel improvised the apology, the producer laughed, and the line became a repeated sign-off. Kimmel said his team later heard from Damon’s publicist that Damon enjoyed the gag and wanted them to keep it going.
How a sign-off became an on-camera “feud”
2006: Damon joins the bit
About a year after the gag began, Damon appeared on a 2006 Jimmy Kimmel Live! prime-time special. Kimmel welcomed him and almost immediately announced that they were out of time. The two staged a mock argument about Damon being bumped, bringing the running line into an on-camera confrontation. Watch the 2006 segment.

2008: The joke expands into a musical prank
In 2008, Sarah Silverman and Damon surprised Kimmel with the song “I’m F—king Matt Damon.” It extended the joke into a deliberately elaborate performance; its premise was comic fiction, not evidence of a real relationship or conflict. Watch the performance.
2015 and after: Sketches keep the premise alive
A 2015 couples-therapy sketch on ABC’s official Jimmy Kimmel Live! page played up the supposed long-running feud. Damon’s character complains that he has been promised a guest spot for more than a decade. That is scripted sketch dialogue, not a factual account of a real dispute. See ABC’s couples-therapy sketch.
