TV-MA means “Mature Audience Only.” In the U.S. TV Parental Guidelines, it warns that a program may contain adult-oriented material and may be unsuitable for children under 17. It is a guidance label—not a complete scene-by-scene description or a universal legal ban.
See the TV Parental Guidelines ratings and the FCC’s TV-MA definition for the official wording.
What content can a TV-MA program include?
A TV-MA rating can reflect one type of mature material or several. Possible content includes:
- Strong, repeated, or coarse language
- Sexual situations or other sexual content
- Nudity
- Graphic, prolonged, or intense violence
- Drug or alcohol use
- Horror, disturbing imagery, abuse, trauma, crime, or other mature themes
TV-MA does not mean that every program contains all of these elements. One title might be rated mainly for language, while another is rated for violence or sexual content. The rating also does not establish a single level of graphicness; two TV-MA programs can differ substantially in intensity, frequency, duration, and context.

Power cords are locked inside a tamper-resistant case – no passwords to guess, no settings to reset. When time's up, a warning alert helps kids transition before power shuts off.
- BUILT TO PREVENT APP WORKAROUNDS – Downloading the Egis Control app on another phone doesn't give a child control of the plug. Device management, schedules, time limits, and overrides remain protected by the registered parent account.
- WORKS WITH XBOX, PLAYSTATION, PC & TV – Supports PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, gaming PCs, smart TVs, and VR headsets. Controls power at the wall outlet for any device that plugs into it.
- CORDS OUT OF SIGHT, OUT OF MIND – Connected plug heads and portions of attached cords stay physically secured inside the locking enclosure until unlocked via the app or backup key. Schedules stay on track without workarounds.
- SET IT TOGETHER, FORGET IT TOGETHER – Create daily schedules and time limits with your family. Both connected devices follow the same schedule and time limits. Devices shut off automatically with a warning alert — no reminders needed, no last-minute negotiations.
What do TV-MA-L, TV-MA-S, and TV-MA-V mean?
The letters are content descriptors used with the U.S. TV Parental Guidelines:
| Label | General indication |
|---|---|
| TV-MA-L | Coarse or strong language |
| TV-MA-S | Sexual situations or sexual content |
| TV-MA-V | Violence |
| TV-MA-LV | Both language and violence |
The broader descriptor set also includes D for suggestive dialogue and FV for fantasy violence in TV-Y7 programming. Descriptors identify the general category, not precisely how explicit, frequent, prolonged, or disturbing it is. Streaming services may add more specific notices such as “sex,” “nudity,” “drugs,” “language,” or “violence.” See the TV Parental Guidelines FAQ.

Is TV-MA the same as TV-14, R, or NC-17?
TV-MA and TV-14 are television classifications. R and NC-17 belong to the U.S. movie-rating system, so none of these labels is an exact equivalent of another.
| Label | System | General meaning |
|---|---|---|
| TV-14 | U.S. TV Parental Guidelines | May be unsuitable for viewers under 14 |
| TV-MA | U.S. TV Parental Guidelines | Mature-audience programming that may be unsuitable for children under 17 |
| R | U.S. movie-rating system | Restricted movie classification |
| NC-17 | U.S. movie-rating system | Movie classification for adults only |
The systems have different criteria, authorities, applications, and presentation. The FCC explains the distinction between television and movie ratings in its ratings discussion. Netflix likewise displays TV and movie ratings as separate categories in its maturity-rating system.

Is TV-MA a legal age restriction?
Generally, no. The TV Parental Guidelines are a voluntary industry system intended to inform parents and support parental controls. “May be unsuitable for children under 17” is advisory language, not an across-the-board U.S. law forbidding every minor from watching every TV-MA program. The FCC describes the system’s voluntary role in its 2026 Media Bureau notice.
A profile or device may still allow playback unless a parent enables restrictions. Individual families, schools, and venues can apply stricter rules.

How streaming services use TV-MA
Netflix
Netflix places a maturity rating on a title’s details page and briefly when playback starts. Its listings can supplement TV-MA with information about sex, language, violence, and nudity. Those details are more useful than the rating alone when you need to screen a particular title. See Netflix’s maturity-rating guidance.
Disney+
In the referenced U.S. help documentation, Disney+ treats TV-MA as its highest maturity setting. Its profile controls can also affect access to some “Not Rated” content. Check the service’s current controls because menus and policies can change. Details are in the Disney+ content-ratings help page.

Platforms may add expanded advisories, PINs, child-profile limits, or localized ratings. A U.S. TV-MA label should not be assumed to have the same name, threshold, or legal effect in another country.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How parents can block TV-MA content
Controls vary by television, cable or satellite provider, streaming app, and device. The usual process is:
- Open the service, television, cable-box, or streaming-device settings.
- Select the child profile or parental-controls section.
- Set the maximum maturity level below TV-MA, commonly TV-14 or lower.
- Create or confirm a PIN if the service provides one.
- Test the child profile to verify that TV-MA titles are blocked.
On systems with hierarchical controls, such as a V-Chip, blocking TV-14 may also block TV-MA. Streaming services may implement ratings differently, so consult the provider’s current help page. The TV Parental Guidelines FAQ explains the V-Chip example and related controls.
Can a series, episode, or version have a different rating?
Yes. Programs are generally rated episode by episode, so ratings and descriptors can vary within one series. A broadcast edit, cable version, premium-channel version, and streaming release may also differ in content and rating. The TV Parental Guidelines ratings page describes these episode and version considerations.

News and sports generally do not carry the TV Parental Guidelines, and most home-shopping and religious programming is also outside the usual ratings practice.
Quick Recap
How to decide whether a TV-MA title is appropriate
- Read the rating: Treat TV-MA as a signal that adult-oriented material may be present.
- Check the descriptors: Look for L, S, V, or the platform’s detailed warnings.
- Review the title-level advisory: Note distinctions such as nudity, sex, drugs, violence, language, or disturbing themes.
- Consider the individual viewer: Age, maturity, sensitivities, and family rules matter more than the icon alone.
- Check the specific episode and version: Content can change across episodes, edits, platforms, and countries.
What TV-MA does not tell you
- It does not guarantee explicit sex or nudity.
- It does not guarantee graphic violence or any other particular element.
- It does not inventory every potentially objectionable moment.
- It does not provide a precise intensity scale.
- It does not mean the same thing in every country or release version.
- It does not itself prevent viewing unless parental controls or another access rule is enabled.
