For a playlist-based YouTube broadcast, OBS Studio is the better control room: use its VLC Video source to play and loop your videos, then send the stream to YouTube. VLC supplies playback; OBS adds scenes, sources and stream controls. The key 24/7 catch is YouTube’s archive limit: a stream running longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. VLC vs OBS: which should you use?
They are not direct substitutes in this workflow. VLC is the media player; OBS is the production and encoding application. OBS’s VLC Video source can play a playlist and loop it, while OBS handles the scene and YouTube stream. OBS’s documentation does not establish VLC alone as a drop-in replacement for OBS’s production and stream-control workflow. For simple playback-only needs, your requirements may differ.

What changes when the stream is meant to run 24/7?
YouTube may not archive a stream longer than 12 hours
YouTube Help says, “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” This concerns the replay archive, not whether YouTube permits a continuous broadcast. If an on-platform replay matters, end or rotate sessions before they exceed 12 hours. YouTube also says DVR rewind capabilities may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. Keep a local recording backup if you need an independent copy.
Long sessions need operational planning
A continuously running OBS setup depends on the computer, network equipment, power and local upload connection remaining usable. YouTube recommends testing upload speed and choosing settings that are reliable for the connection. Test at the actual streaming location; no India-wide ISP performance or power-reliability figure is established here. Check the PC’s sustained hardware load and thermals, too.

Set up a looping YouTube broadcast with OBS and VLC
- Install OBS and VLC. Match their architectures. OBS specifies 64-bit VLC when using 64-bit OBS.
- Add the playlist source. In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the scene, add the media files to its playlist and enable looping. Confirm that the listed files are accessible to the computer running OBS.
- Review source visibility behavior. OBS documents “Stop when not visible, restart when visible” as the default behavior. If you switch scenes or hide the source, playback can stop and restart; account for that in your scene design and test it before going unattended.
- Configure YouTube as the destination. Use RTMPS where available. YouTube says, “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” Keep your stream key private; anyone with access to it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
- Choose resolution and bitrate for your real connection. YouTube’s current encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, lists 1080p30 H.264 at 4 Mbps minimum and 5 Mbps recommended, and 720p30 H.264 at 3 Mbps minimum and 4 Mbps recommended. These are YouTube’s published encoder figures, not estimates of Indian broadband performance. Run a sustained upload test at the streaming location and leave headroom for connection variation.
- Test representative content. Use audio and motion like the planned broadcast, then monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages. A static test image or a short test with no audio may not expose issues that appear in the real playlist.
- Plan archives and local storage. If you need a YouTube replay, rotate sessions before the 12-hour threshold. Record locally as a backup and calculate the required disk capacity from your chosen recording bitrate and retention time; there is no universal storage size for every setup.
Settings and trade-offs to check
RTMPS is the normal starting point
YouTube recommends RTMPS for ingestion. Its encoder guidance also covers codecs, frame rates, bitrate and resolution; use the current settings supported by your encoder and channel rather than assuming that one preset fits every connection.
HLS is not a general-purpose fix
YouTube supports HLS as an option when an encoder or codec requirement calls for it and the encoder supports it. YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency because it sends segments rather than a continuous RTMP stream. Do not switch to HLS simply to try to cure an unstable connection.

Local resilience is specific to your setup
- Test upload performance at the exact location and at a time representative of normal use.
- Check computer load and temperature during an extended run at the resolution and frame rate you intend to use.
- A UPS may help bridge a brief power interruption, but its runtime depends on the connected equipment and it cannot guarantee uninterrupted service. Size it for the PC and network gear you actually use.
- Use external storage only after estimating recording size from bitrate and retention duration; no single drive capacity is right for every broadcast.
