Yes—Venom appears to die in Venom: The Last Dance, but his sacrifice is the film’s deliberate ending rather than an accidental loss. Venom separates from Eddie Brock, takes the attacking Xenophages with him and is destroyed when the Imperium facility’s acid-dissolvent system is activated. The act also destroys the Codex, the key Knull needs to escape his prison. Eddie survives, his record is cleared, and he visits the Statue of Liberty alone. Knull remains imprisoned, while a broken vial and a cockroach in the final post-credits scene leave open the possibility that some symbiote material survived. That tease is not confirmation that Eddie’s Venom is alive or that a fourth film has been ordered.
Does Venom die in The Last Dance?
Venom’s apparent death is the film’s central sacrifice. The Xenophages keep coming because Eddie and Venom carry the Codex, so Venom concludes that hiding or running will only postpone another attack. He separates from Eddie, draws the creatures toward the facility’s acid-dissolvent system and absorbs them long enough for Rex Strickland to trigger the destruction sequence.
The resulting blast destroys the Xenophages and appears to destroy Venom and the Codex as well. The movie does not show Venom reforming, escaping or rejoining Eddie afterward. Its emotional resolution treats the loss as real: Eddie wakes without his companion, remembers the life they shared and continues alone.

Why Venom chooses to sacrifice himself
Venom’s choice solves two problems at once. It protects Eddie from the hunters and removes the Codex that would allow Knull to break free. The decision is therefore not simply a last-minute act of bravery; it is the only way the pair can stop an attack that will otherwise continue wherever they go.

What the ending says about Eddie and Venom
The trilogy has treated Eddie and Venom as an inseparable, argumentative partnership. By ending their story with Eddie alive but alone, the film makes the relationship itself the cost of victory. Eddie gets the ordinary future he has been trying to recover, but that future is also a reminder that Venom is gone.
What is the Codex, and why does Knull need it?
The Codex is a living record created when Venom’s life force revives Eddie. Their combined life forces leave behind a unique signature that Knull can use as a key. Because the Codex exists through the Eddie–Venom bond, separating the two is not enough; the Codex must ultimately be destroyed.
How the Codex is created
When Venom brings Eddie back to life, the two are no longer merely host and symbiote. Their life forces become linked, producing the Codex. That link explains why Knull’s agents can track them even when Venom stays hidden inside Eddie.
Why the Xenophages hunt Eddie
Knull sends the Xenophages to recover the Codex, not to punish Eddie for its own sake. Every attack is an attempt to seize the key and deliver it to their imprisoned creator. Venom’s instinct to remain concealed inside Eddie is a tactical response to that tracking ability, but concealment can only work temporarily as the hunters close in.
Why destroying Venom destroys the Codex
The Codex is not a detachable object that Eddie can hand over or discard. It is the consequence of the bond between him and Venom. Venom’s decision to end the bond inside the dissolvent system therefore removes the key Knull needs, even though it costs Venom his existence.
Who is Knull in the film?
Knull is presented as the imprisoned creator of the symbiotes and the force behind the hunt. He is not physically released during the main story. Instead, he directs the Xenophages from his prison and waits for the Codex to open a path out.

The mid-credits scene confirms that Knull survives the destruction at Area 51. He remains confined, but he declares that the King in Black is awake and promises revenge. The line changes the status of the ending: Eddie and Venom’s immediate conflict is finished, while Knull remains an active threat in the larger mythology.

Within the movie’s terminology, “King in Black” is Knull’s own title and a declaration of power. The scene uses it as a warning rather than an explanation of a new plot. It establishes Knull as the unresolved antagonist without showing how he could escape after the Codex has been destroyed.
How does the story reach the Area 51 finale?
Eddie and Venom begin the film as fugitives after the events involving Detective Patrick Mulligan. They hide in Mexico and attempt to reach New York while an Imperium government operation tries to capture Venom for study. Their route carries them through Mexico, Las Vegas and New York before Eddie is taken to the Imperium facility at Area 51.
The fugitives’ route
- Mexico: Eddie and Venom stay out of sight while trying to understand why the pursuit has intensified.
- Las Vegas: Their attempt to keep moving turns into another confrontation, making clear that the Xenophages can continue finding them.
- New York: The destination represents Eddie’s return to a normal life, but he reaches it only as part of a journey that eventually leads to capture.
- Area 51: Imperium holds Eddie and studies Venom, creating the concentrated setting for the final attack.
What happens when the Xenophages attack
The Xenophages assault the Imperium facility, turning a government laboratory into a battlefield. Symbiotes that have been held at the site are released and bond with scientists and soldiers. Those new hosts fight alongside the people trapped inside, giving the finale a wider scale than Eddie and Venom’s earlier escapes.
The facility’s experiments, Imperium’s attempt to control Venom and Knull’s demand for the Codex all collide in this sequence. Once Venom recognizes that the hunters will not stop, he uses the facility’s acid-dissolvent system as the only available means to eliminate them and the Codex together.
What happens to Eddie after Venom’s sacrifice?
Eddie survives the destruction and wakes in a hospital. Officials tell him that his record has been cleared in recognition of what happened. The clearance resolves the immediate legal pressure that forced him into hiding, but it cannot restore Venom.

After leaving the hospital, Eddie goes to New York to see the Statue of Liberty. Venom had wanted to visit it, so Eddie completes that wish on his own. The scene is deliberately quiet: Eddie has regained legal freedom and a chance at an ordinary life, yet the landmark becomes a memorial to the partner he lost.
Is Eddie still carrying the Codex?
The ending presents the Codex as destroyed with Venom. Eddie does not display a new symbiote ability, and no surviving Codex is identified in the hospital or at the Statue of Liberty. The film leaves a possible residue for later stories, not an intact key inside Eddie.
What do the mid-credits and post-credits scenes reveal?
Mid-credits: Knull is still alive
The mid-credits scene returns to Knull in his prison. He has not escaped, but he knows the Codex plan failed and vows revenge. This is a direct confirmation that the villain survives; it is not a scene showing Venom’s recovery.
Post-credits: the vial and the cockroach
The final scene follows the bartender after the Area 51 destruction. A broken containment vial and a cockroach are shown amid the wreckage. Together they suggest that a trace of symbiote material may remain, but the scene does not identify that material as Eddie’s original Venom.
The imagery is intentionally ambiguous. It can support a future symbiote storyline, yet it cannot establish that Venom regenerated, that Eddie will bond with him again or that a sequel is in production. Those conclusions go beyond what the scene shows.
Is Venom 4 happening?
No fourth live-action Venom film has been confirmed by the evidence available here. Kelly Marcel said the filmmakers always saw the project as a three-story arc and knew where it would end. That statement supports reading Eddie and Venom’s main story as intentionally completed.

Then join Eddie and Venom in their earlier adventures with the original Venom and Venom: Let There Be Carnage, the blockbuster favorites that solidified this heroic friendship.
There are still two open doors for future material. Knull remains imprisoned and explicitly threatens revenge, and the post-credits vial hints that symbiote matter may have survived. Either thread could support another story, but neither is an announcement of Venom 4.

- Knull’s escape: The Codex was destroyed, so a future story would need to establish a different route out of his prison.
- The surviving material: The vial scene would need to identify what remained and whether it can develop into a full symbiote.
- Eddie’s role: The film ends with Eddie separated from Venom, so a reunion would require a new cause rather than a simple reset.
How does the ending compare with the first two films?
The three films change the scale of the conflict while keeping Eddie’s bond with a symbiote at the center. The first film’s opposing force is Riot, the second uses Carnage, and The Last Dance expands the mythology to Knull and the Xenophages.
| Film in the trilogy | Primary opposing force | Story emphasis | Relationship status at the end |
|---|---|---|---|
| First film | Riot | Establishing Eddie and Venom as an uneasy partnership | The partnership is formed and becomes the film’s solution |
| Second film | Carnage | Testing the partnership against a more destructive symbiote bond | Eddie and Venom remain together after the conflict |
| The Last Dance | Knull and the Xenophages | Connecting the pair to symbiote mythology and the Codex | Venom sacrifices himself so Eddie can live free |
The progression also shifts the genre balance. Buddy comedy and action remain important, but the final film gives the relationship a tragic endpoint and places the larger symbiote mythology around it. The result is a conclusion that resolves Eddie and Venom’s personal arc while preserving Knull as a possible future antagonist.

What is the clearest reading of the ending?
Venom: The Last Dance closes the Eddie–Venom relationship through a conscious act of self-sacrifice. Eddie survives, the Codex is removed and Knull fails to escape, which gives the trilogy a complete emotional and immediate plot resolution. The credits scenes then widen the horizon: Knull is waiting, and a possible trace of symbiote material may remain. Those hooks make more stories possible without undoing the film’s stated ending.
