Toy Story 5 is Pixar’s fifth feature in the series, released theatrically in June 2026 and added to Disney+ in September 2026. The film reunites Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Jessie and the other familiar toys for a conflict Pixar describes as “Toy meets Tech”: Bonnie’s traditional toys face a frog-shaped smart tablet called Lilypad, whose digital approach to play challenges how they protect their child. It is rated PG, runs 1 hour 42 minutes, and blends adventure, animation, comedy and family storytelling.
When did Toy Story 5 come out?
The movie’s main release dates and formats are:
| Format | Availability | What viewers need |
|---|---|---|
| Theatrical release | June 19, 2026 | A cinema showing; schedules vary by territory. |
| Digital purchase or rental | August 18, 2026 | A transaction through a participating digital storefront; local listings can differ. |
| Blu-ray | September 22, 2026 | A physical disc and compatible Blu-ray player; stock and editions depend on region. |
| Disney+ | September 23, 2026 | An active Disney+ subscription in a territory where the film is offered. |
Disney’s film materials identify the digital date as August 18 and the Blu-ray date as September 22. Disney also cautions that Disney+ content and platform availability can vary by region, so subscribers should check the service’s local listing rather than assume that a release date applies worldwide. The same regional caution applies to digital stores and imported Blu-ray discs, whose video standards, subtitles and bonus features may differ.
What is Toy Story 5 about?
The story begins with Woody returning from a toy-rescue mission after a call brings him back to Bonnie’s room. He reunites with Buzz and joins a search for Jessie and Bullseye while the toys confront a new problem: screens and connected devices are drawing children away from traditional imaginative play.

Woody, Buzz and Jessie face a new kind of rival
Jessie is now sheriff in Bonnie’s room, with Buzz serving as her deputy. Her job is not simply to keep order among the toys; she is trying to keep Bonnie and her friends engaged with hands-on play as screens become more attractive to them. Woody’s return gives the group an experienced rescuer and a link to the earlier chapters of the franchise, while Buzz remains the team’s highly capable partner.

Who is Lilypad?
Lilypad is a frog-shaped smart tablet. She is not presented as a conventional villain: she wants to help Bonnie and believes her digital platform can solve the social problem facing the children. Her signature idea is “The Pond,” a space designed to bring people together through technology. That solution places her in direct conflict with the toys’ belief that physical play, storytelling and shared make-believe are essential.
The central tension therefore is not simply old toys versus a gadget. Lilypad is also trying to help, but her idea of connection is built around a screen. Woody, Buzz and Jessie must decide how to protect Bonnie without ignoring what the new device offers or treating every piece of technology as automatically harmful.
Which new tech toys appear?
Smarty Pants is a toilet-training tech toy who is rescued from sleep mode. Atlas is an upbeat hippo GPS toy. Both expand the film’s technology theme beyond Lilypad: the room contains devices with specific practical functions, personalities and ideas about how children should interact with them.
Who is in the Toy Story 5 cast?
The principal voice cast combines the series’ returning leads with performers playing the new technology characters.
| Actor | Character | Role in the story |
|---|---|---|
| Tom Hanks | Woody | The returning cowboy toy who comes back after a rescue mission. |
| Tim Allen | Buzz Lightyear | Jessie’s deputy and Woody’s longtime partner. |
| Joan Cusack | Jessie | Sheriff in Bonnie’s room, determined to preserve playtime. |
| Tony Hale | Forky | The craft-project toy introduced in the previous film. |
| Greta Lee | Lilypad | The frog-shaped smart tablet behind The Pond. |
| Conan O’Brien | Smarty Pants | A toilet-training tech toy awakened from sleep mode. |
| Craig Robinson | Atlas | An upbeat hippo GPS toy. |
Disney’s cast listings also include Annie Potts, Bonnie Hunt, John Ratzenberger, Wallace Shawn, Blake Clark, Jeff Bergman, Anna Vocino, Melissa Villaseñor, John Hopkins, Kristen Schaal, Ernie Hudson, Keanu Reeves, Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio and Alan Cumming. Disney’s public materials do not assign each of those performers a character in the release information summarized here, so their individual roles should not be inferred from the cast list alone.

Who directed and made the film?
Andrew Stanton directs and co-writes Toy Story 5. Kenna Harris co-directs and co-writes, Lindsey Collins produces, and Randy Newman provides the score. Stanton’s return keeps the film connected to the creative history of the franchise, while Harris shares both directing and writing responsibilities on this installment.
How can you watch Toy Story 5 now?
As of October 2026, the most straightforward subscription option is Disney+, provided the film is available in your country. Viewers who prefer to own it can use the digital release from August 18 or the Blu-ray issued September 22. A cinema remains an option in territories where screenings are still scheduled, but theatrical runs are controlled by local exhibitors and can end at different times.

| Disney+ | Subscribers who want on-demand streaming without a separate purchase. | Catalogues differ by country and can change. |
| Digital purchase or rental | People who want immediate home viewing or a transaction separate from a subscription. | Store support, language tracks and rental terms vary by territory. |
| Blu-ray | Collectors, families seeking a physical copy and viewers who want access without relying on a streaming catalogue. | Disc-region compatibility and retailer inventory must be checked before buying. |
| Cinema | Audiences who want a large-screen presentation and shared theatrical experience. | Remaining showtimes depend on local theaters. |
For a Blu-ray purchase, check the disc region, audio and subtitle options, packaging and whether the listing is an official release. Disney’s release asset supports the September 22 Blu-ray date, but it does not establish a single worldwide retailer, price or bonus-feature package.
What does the film’s “Toy meets Tech” premise mean?
The phrase describes a story about competing ideas of play rather than a simple battle between good toys and bad electronics. Woody’s group represents open-ended physical imagination: a toy can become anything when a child invents a game. Lilypad represents an engineered social experience in which software guides how children connect and participate.
That distinction gives each side a credible goal. Jessie wants to keep Bonnie engaged with play, while Lilypad wants to solve the same social problem through The Pond. The conflict asks whether technology can support imagination without replacing it, and whether traditional toys can adapt without losing what makes them valuable. The film’s new characters—Smarty Pants and Atlas as well as Lilypad—make the question part of the room’s everyday life instead of limiting it to one device.

The Associated Press reported a $160 million domestic opening weekend, $152 million internationally and $312 million worldwide. AP also reported a production budget of $250 million, excluding marketing. Those are opening-weekend and budget figures attributed to AP’s 2026 coverage, not a final worldwide total or a profitability calculation.
In the same AP report, Paul Dergarabedian, head of marketplace trends for Rentrak, called the result a possible new model for a summer release that combines theatrical scale with later home viewing. His observation is an industry interpretation of the opening, not a guarantee that every sequel will follow the same pattern.

Disney launched a limited-time Fortnite experience titled Toy Story 5: The Great Toy Rescue around the Disney+ debut. Disney’s press release says the experience ran from September 22 through October 5, 2026, making it a promotional extension with a fixed availability window rather than a permanent mode.
Disney also reported that the Toy Story franchise had accumulated more than 2 billion hours streamed globally on Disney+ by 2026. That figure covers the franchise, not Toy Story 5 alone, and it is a company-reported streaming measure rather than a theatrical attendance count.
