There is no single objectively correct ranking of the best science-fiction films, and the evidence available for this title does not establish a complete twenty-film lineup. What it does establish is a useful contrast between two very different endpoints: Ex Machina, an AI-centered thriller, and 2001: A Space Odyssey, a visually driven journey through space and human evolution. Rather than inventing eighteen films or presenting another publisher’s choices as this article’s own, this guide explains what those endpoints show—and what a transparent ranking would need to make clear.
A credible “best sci-fi movies of all time” list needs more than twenty titles in numbered order. It needs a stated idea of “best,” the same standards applied to every entry, and enough film-specific context to explain the choices. The distinction matters because a list organized around influence may look very different from one intended to help someone choose a tense, accessible film for tonight.
Why isn’t there one definitive top 20?
“Best” depends on what a ranking values. A list that prioritizes influence and cinematic craft may order films differently from one focused on bold speculative ideas, narrative pace, or accessibility. Those are all legitimate criteria, but a ranking should say which ones it uses and apply them consistently.

Published lists illustrate the difference between an institution’s curation and an editorial ranking. The American Film Institute ranks 2001: A Space Odyssey first on its science-fiction list; the British Film Institute has highlighted the film in selections about space travel and British science fiction. GamesRadar+ also places it first in its own ranked science-fiction list. These are distinct judgments, not a shared or universal top-twenty order.

AFI’s 2025 Movie Club page calls 2001 a landmark of science fiction and says it has earned acknowledgment across six AFI lists. That six-list count is a measure of the film’s presence in AFI’s own selections—not six awards, and not a tally of every critic or viewer who considers it a favorite. Likewise, a BFI selection about space travel or British science fiction has a different purpose and scope from a single all-time ranking.
GamesRadar+’s list is another useful point of comparison: it also places 2001 at number one, identifies it as a 1968 film directed by Stanley Kubrick, and describes it as drawing on Arthur C. Clarke’s short story The Sentinel. Agreement on a top choice does not mean the lists share the same methodology or that one publisher’s order settles the question. The honest formulation is that AFI ranks 2001 first on its science-fiction list, while GamesRadar+ gives it the top position on its own list.
What do Ex Machina and 2001: A Space Odyssey show about the genre?
The films offer sharply different kinds of science fiction. Ex Machina narrows its speculative question to an AI experiment and a tense interpersonal encounter; 2001 uses space, imagery, and evolution to work on a much broader scale. That contrast is a useful reminder that science fiction can be intimate and suspenseful, or expansive and visually led.
They also show why a ranking needs to explain the viewing experience, not only the premise. A viewer drawn to a contained thriller may respond to the concentrated human-and-machine setup of Ex Machina. Someone looking for a film whose storytelling unfolds primarily through images may be more interested in 2001. Neither preference makes a viewer more or less correct; they describe different things a science-fiction film can do.
Ex Machina: an AI thriller built around an experiment
In Alex Garland’s science-fiction thriller, Caleb is enlisted by CEO Nathan to take part in an experiment involving Ava, a humanoid robot. The setup makes artificial intelligence the engine of the story while keeping the drama concentrated on the people and machine in the experiment. Space.com lists the film’s release date as April 10, 2015, and identifies Domhnall Gleeson, Alicia Vikander, and Oscar Isaac in the cast.
That premise gives the film a clear position in a genre conversation: it makes a speculative technology the center of an experiment and lets the resulting interpersonal tension carry the thriller. In a list using consistent criteria, the entry could be assessed for the question its AI premise raises, the way its experiment structures the story, and the focused kind of suspense it offers. Those are useful grounds for explaining its appeal without claiming an unsupported consensus ranking or relying on changeable audience-score snapshots.

Space.com describes Ex Machina as a science-fiction thriller and lists its release date as April 10, 2015. That date and the named cast provide orientation, but they do not by themselves determine a film’s rank. Release year, director, cast, premise, craft, influence, and viewing style answer different reader questions; a transparent list should not treat basic identification details as proof of quality.
2001: A Space Odyssey: science fiction told primarily through images
Stanley Kubrick’s 1968 film takes a different approach. The BFI describes its narrative as primarily visual, with dialogue kept to a minimum, and points to the film’s effects and original 70mm Cinerama presentation as part of its significance. The result is not simply a story about space travel: its scale and form make the viewing experience part of what the film is exploring.
The BFI’s description helps explain why 2001 can be a demanding but distinctive choice. A viewer expecting a dialogue-led explanation of every development may encounter a different rhythm here: the BFI specifically emphasizes the visual narrative and minimal dialogue. That is not a flaw to be disguised or a promise that every viewer will enjoy the experience. It is a concrete part of what makes the film’s approach different from a conventional, exposition-heavy thriller.
The film’s effects and original 70mm Cinerama presentation are also relevant to how its craft is discussed. Those details place the viewing experience in a cinematic context; they should not be stretched into an unsupported claim that every current screening or home edition recreates that presentation. The BFI’s account is useful for explaining what distinguished the film’s original presentation and visual storytelling.
The BFI notes that Kubrick began discussing storylines with Arthur C. Clarke in 1964. AFI calls 2001 a landmark of science fiction and ranks it first on its genre list. Those are grounds for understanding its historical and institutional standing, not proof that every viewer must rank it first.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAFI also records the line spoken by Dave, played by Keir Dullea: “Open the pod bay doors, please, HAL.” It is a memorable point of recognition, but a single quote does not summarize the film’s largely visual mode. Taken together, the AFI and BFI details help describe two separate things: its standing in institutional selections and the formal qualities that shape the experience of watching it.

How should a science-fiction ranking be judged?
A useful ranking makes its standards visible rather than disguising preference as fact. Four criteria help explain why a film belongs and what sort of experience it offers:
- Speculative premise: What question about technology, society, the future, or human nature does the film explore? An entry should say what its idea is, not just label it “visionary” or “important.”
- Cinematic craft: How effectively do its visual design, sound, performances, and storytelling serve that premise? A film can be visually led, dialogue-heavy, or built around suspense; the relevant question is whether its approach serves the experience it is trying to create.
- Influence and significance: Is there a clear basis for treating the film as important to science-fiction cinema? Institutional recognition can inform this judgment without settling it. Name whose recognition is being discussed and do not convert one institution’s selection into universal agreement.
- Viewing experience: Is the film tense, contemplative, visually driven, accessible, or deliberately challenging—and is that style integral to its achievement? Describing pace and style helps readers decide whether a film suits their interests as well as understand its critical case.
These criteria also help distinguish historical importance from personal preference. A landmark film may be essential viewing without being the right choice for someone seeking a fast-paced thriller. Conversely, a tightly focused genre film can be compelling without having the same historical stature as a major cinematic landmark.
To make the criteria practical, a list editor can use the same short test for every entry: identify the speculative idea; describe the film’s defining storytelling or craft choice; state what supports its significance; and tell readers what kind of viewing experience to expect. Then compare the entries against one another rather than changing the standard from title to title. If influence matters for one film, explain why it matters for another—or explain why the comparison is not equivalent.

A ranking can also distinguish inclusion from placement. The case for including a film may be that it offers a compelling speculative premise or a distinctive cinematic experience; the case for placing it above another film requires a comparison under the stated criteria. “This belongs in a guide” and “this is number three” are different claims. Without that distinction, a numbered list can look more precise than its reasoning supports.
Finally, criteria should not be mistaken for a mathematical scoring system unless the editor has actually defined and used one. The four axes above are a framework for explaining judgments, not a claim that films have objectively measurable totals. A reader should be able to see why a choice was made, understand the tradeoffs, and disagree with the order without being misled about whose judgment it represents.
What can be responsibly ranked from the available details?
The evidence supports discussing the two films named in the title and comparing how other publishers have ranked 2001. It does not establish which eighteen other films belong in a particular top twenty, or what their order should be. A complete film-by-film ranking would require a defined editorial selection and comparable, film-specific support for the entries; filling the gap with an invented list would imply a basis that has not been established.

For a complete ranking, an editor would first need to confirm the intended middle eighteen titles and their order. Each entry would then need reliable identification—at minimum, its year, director, and central premise—along with enough detail to apply the stated criteria. Comparisons should be consistent: a list should not give one title a detailed case based on craft and another a placement based only on reputation. Where an entry is a close call or sits near the edge of the genre, the explanation should make that editorial choice clear.
This is also why a ranked list should identify the source of every institutional comparison. AFI’s first-place position is AFI’s judgment. BFI’s film selections are BFI’s curation within the subjects named by those selections. GamesRadar+’s ranking is that publisher’s editorial order. Readers can use all three to understand how 2001 has been positioned elsewhere, but none supplies the missing eighteen films or automatically determines this article’s order.
So the most useful takeaway is not a fabricated number-one-to-twenty sequence. It is the distinction between the standards a list uses and the authority readers may assume it has. A new ranking should identify its own criteria, make its choices on that basis, and give each film enough context for readers to evaluate the case.

Readers who want to explore the film after encountering it in a ranking may look for a physical edition under the phrase 2001: A Space Odyssey Blu-ray. A retail listing linked from GamesRadar+ makes a physical-product path relevant, but it does not establish a particular edition, current stock, market, or affiliate status. Check the seller’s listing for the exact format and availability before linking to or buying a copy; do not assume that a category-level mention identifies a currently available product.
A science-fiction film guide or film-history book could also help readers explore beyond a ranked list, but no particular book or merchant is established here. Any specific recommendation would need its own verification. For this article, the most useful next step remains clarifying the intended film lineup rather than substituting an unverified product or a different publisher’s list.
