These 23 films are editorial picks for viewers who want something better than another pass through Netflix’s most-promoted row. The list deliberately mixes quiet dramas, international cinema, inventive thrillers, horror, comedy and family-friendly stories; it is not an objective ranking, because “underrated” has no single industry measure. Rotten Tomatoes uses the term broadly for underseen critical successes, films whose first wave of attention faded, staff favorites and rediscoveries.
Netflix availability changes by country and week. Netflix says new shows and movies arrive every week, so search each title in your own catalog before planning a screening. A current Parade roundup contains 27 films rather than 23; the selection below is an independent 23-film set chosen for range, discoverability and distinct viewing moods.

What are the best overlooked dramas and comedies for a relaxed night?
The Fundamentals of Caring (2016)
Mood: Warm, funny and road-trip oriented. Why it may be missed: Its small-scale premise can disappear beside louder Netflix originals. A grieving writer becomes a caregiver for a sarcastic teenager with muscular dystrophy, and an improvised journey turns into a sharply observed friendship. Expect adult humor, grief and disability-related discussion rather than a glossy inspirational formula. It suits viewers who want emotional payoff without a relentlessly heavy tone.

Paddleton (2019)
Mood: Quiet, intimate and bittersweet. Two middle-aged neighbors bond over an unlikely friendship when one receives a terminal diagnosis. The film stays focused on awkward conversations, routines and the ethics of helping someone retain control, so it rewards viewers who prefer understated acting to plot machinery. Its subject matter includes terminal illness and assisted death; it is not a casual comedy despite its gentle humor.
The Half of It (2020)
Mood: Thoughtful teen romance with literary wit. A highly capable student writes love letters for a classmate and discovers that the arrangement complicates her own feelings. The story’s friendship-first structure and queer coming-of-age perspective make it more reflective than a standard high-school romance. It works for older teenagers and adults who want tenderness, cultural identity and philosophical conversation without explicit sexual content.
The Forty-Year-Old Version (2020)
Mood: Energetic, candid and creative. A playwright facing career frustration reinvents herself as a rapper, balancing artistic ambition, money pressure and the expectations placed on Black women. Radha Blank wrote, directed and stars, giving the film a personal rhythm that can be overlooked when viewers are scanning for conventional music biopics. Strong language, sexual references and adult themes make it better suited to mature teens and adults.

Mood: Compassionate, messy and adult. A New York couple navigating fertility treatment confronts medical uncertainty, financial strain and the way reproductive decisions affect family relationships. Its humor comes from recognizable discomfort rather than broad gags, and its literary-world setting gives the story an unusual texture. It contains frank discussions of infertility, procedures and sex, so it is aimed at adults rather than children.
Which international Netflix films deserve more attention?
Atlantics (2019)
Origin and language: Senegal; primarily French and Wolof. Mood: Romantic, spectral and socially observant. Mati Diop’s first feature follows young women in Dakar after the men they love leave by sea for work, blending economic reality with supernatural revenge. Its genre shifts are part of the point: viewers expecting a straightforward romance may be surprised, while fans of atmospheric cinema will find a haunting story about labor, desire and grief.

A Sun (2019)
Origin and language: Taiwan; Mandarin. Mood: Expansive family drama. The film traces a Taiwanese family after a son’s imprisonment, revealing how parental expectations, shame and unspoken grief shape everyone’s choices. Its long-form structure asks for attention, but the emotional details accumulate into a powerful portrait of class and responsibility. It is best for viewers comfortable with subtitles and serious themes including crime, depression and bereavement.
The Disciple (2020)
Origin and language: India; Marathi. Mood: Meditative and demanding. A classical singer pursues an ideal of musical purity while confronting doubt, aging teachers and the compromises required to make art a life. The film’s deliberate pace and focus on Hindustani music can make it easy to skip, yet its questions about talent, devotion and status are widely relatable. Subtitles and patience are essential; this is a contemplative drama rather than a conventional music triumph story.
The Hand of God (2021)
Origin and language: Italy; Italian. Mood: Lyrical adolescence that turns into grief. Set in 1980s Naples, Paolo Sorrentino’s semi-autobiographical film follows a teenager whose family, football obsession and sudden tragedy redirect his future. It combines exuberant comedy with painful loss, so the tonal changes are intentional. Sexual situations, strong language and bereavement make it a mature viewing choice, while its intimate family focus rewards viewers who usually avoid sports-centered stories.
The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind (2019)
Origin and language: Malawi; English and Chichewa. Mood: Hopeful, practical and family-oriented. Based on William Kamkwamba’s memoir, it follows a teenager who studies science to help his village during famine. The story foregrounds school access, family conflict and resourcefulness rather than treating technology as magic. Some frightening famine imagery and peril call for parental guidance with younger children, but it is one of the more accessible international choices on this list.
Which underrated Netflix thrillers and horror films are most intense?
His House (2020)
Mood: Psychological horror with a refugee perspective. A couple seeking safety in England discovers that the house assigned to them contains a presence connected to their past. The supernatural scares are inseparable from displacement, survivor’s guilt and hostile bureaucracy, giving the film more to discuss than its premise suggests. It includes disturbing images, violence and trauma; viewers wanting a gentle ghost story should choose something else.

Calibre (2018)
Mood: Tense, morally corrosive thriller. Two friends on a hunting trip in the Scottish Highlands make a catastrophic mistake and then try to contain its consequences. The remote setting creates pressure without relying on constant action, while each attempt to fix the problem worsens it. Violence, hunting imagery, alcohol misuse and sustained anxiety make it unsuitable for children and uncomfortable for viewers who prefer clear-cut heroes.
Apostle (2018)
Mood: Period mystery that escalates into folk horror. In 1905, a man infiltrates an isolated island cult to rescue his sister and uncovers a system built on faith, coercion and exploitation. Its first act is investigative before the film turns graphic and surreal, so it rewards viewers who enjoy a slow-burn setup. Expect strong gore, torture, disturbing religious imagery and sexual threat.
The Platform (2019)
Origin and language: Spain; Spanish. Mood: Allegorical, claustrophobic science fiction. Prisoners on different levels receive food from a descending platform, turning an impossible social hierarchy into a brutal experiment. The film is deliberately blunt about scarcity, privilege and collective action, and its ambiguity invites argument after the credits. Graphic violence, cannibalism, bodily fluids and suicide references make it strictly adult viewing.
The Night Comes for Us (2018)
Origin and language: Indonesia; Indonesian. Mood: Relentless martial-arts action. A former enforcer protects a young girl from a criminal syndicate, triggering increasingly elaborate fights. The film’s reputation among action fans has not translated into universal visibility because its violence is extreme and its story is spare. It is for adults seeking choreography, practical impact and Indonesian genre filmmaking; graphic dismemberment and prolonged brutality are central, not incidental.
Which challenging Netflix films reward a patient viewer?
I’m Thinking of Ending Things (2020)
Mood: Unsettling, cerebral and dreamlike. A young woman traveling to meet her boyfriend’s parents experiences time, identity and memory slipping out of alignment. Charlie Kaufman adapts Iain Reid’s novel into a film that withholds straightforward explanations, so it is better approached as a psychological puzzle than a conventional thriller. Depression, suicide, disturbing imagery and emotional abuse are significant content concerns.

I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore (2017)
Mood: Offbeat revenge comedy that turns dark. After a burglary, a disillusioned nursing assistant recruits a neighbor to recover her belongings, only to become entangled with increasingly dangerous criminals. The first half’s awkward humor makes the later violence more jarring, which may explain why it is not an easy recommendation to categorize. Strong language, drug use and graphic violence make it an adult choice for viewers who like morally messy genre hybrids.
Mudbound (2017)
Mood: Historical drama with intersecting family viewpoints. Two Mississippi families—one Black and one white—live with the consequences of racism, war trauma and poverty after World War II. Its deliberate pace and ensemble structure reward attention to how institutions shape private decisions. The film contains racist violence, sexual violence, animal cruelty and intense wartime memories, so it is not suitable for younger audiences.
Beasts of No Nation (2015)
Mood: Devastating war drama. A boy is forced into a militia after violence destroys his family, and the film follows how survival and indoctrination alter his sense of self. Its technical confidence can be overshadowed by the difficulty of the subject, but it remains a significant film about child soldiers and moral injury. Graphic combat, abuse, drug use and traumatic imagery require careful adult judgment.

Dolemite Is My Name (2019)
Mood: Fast, funny and celebratory. Rudy Ray Moore’s attempt to turn a stage persona into a low-budget movie becomes a story about collaboration, self-belief and making opportunities when the industry says no. The ensemble performance and production-story structure make it work for groups who want laughs with a real creative undercurrent. Strong language, sexual material and crude humor mean it is intended for adults.

Mood: Dry family comedy with emotional friction. Three adult children reconnect around their difficult father, exposing old rivalries and the ways artistic ambition can distort family identity. Noah Baumbach’s overlapping dialogue and ensemble performances reward viewers who enjoy character-driven arguments more than tidy plot resolutions. It includes profanity, alcohol misuse, sexual references and emotionally abrasive behavior, making it a mature but conversation-friendly choice.

The Two Popes (2019)
Mood: Accessible, dialogue-led drama. A series of conversations between Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio and Pope Benedict XVI explores doctrine, institutional responsibility, personal regret and the possibility of change. The film’s appeal is less about suspense than about two sharply different temperaments learning to listen. Religious themes, references to abuse scandals and discussions of Argentina’s dictatorship call for context, but the presentation is generally suitable for older teens and adults.
The Wonder (2022)
Mood: Slow-burn historical mystery. An English nurse travels to rural Ireland to observe a girl who reportedly survives without eating, while the community’s faith and secrets close in around them. The film asks how stories become systems of control and uses its theatrical framing to remind viewers that belief is being constructed. Themes include religious extremism, child endangerment, grief and eating-related distress; it is best for mature viewers.
How should I choose among these 23 films?
- Choose intensity first. For gentle character work, begin with The Fundamentals of Caring or Paddleton. For extreme genre violence, choose only The Night Comes for Us, The Platform or Apostle if those content warnings fit your group.
- Decide whether subtitles are welcome. The international section includes films in French, Wolof, Mandarin, Marathi, Italian, Chichewa, Spanish and Indonesian. Subtitles open up very different storytelling traditions but may not suit a distracted group watch.
- Match the film to the conversation you want afterward. The Half of It and The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind are approachable choices for mixed ages; I’m Thinking of Ending Things and The Wonder are better when viewers enjoy interpretation and unresolved questions.
- Check the current catalog and maturity controls. Search the exact title in your country, confirm the audio and subtitle options, and review Netflix’s maturity information before starting. A title can disappear or move between territories without changing the film itself.
Why can an underrated-movie list never be completely definitive?
Visibility is not the same thing as quality. A film can have strong reviews yet remain underseen, lose attention after release, appeal to a narrow audience, or become difficult to find when the catalog changes. Rotten Tomatoes’ own “hidden gems” explanation is intentionally broad, while Netflix’s official understated-movies category is a changing discovery shelf rather than a permanent canon.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are all 23 movies available on Netflix in every country?
No. Netflix licenses differ by territory, and titles can leave or return as agreements change. Search the film in your local Netflix catalog on the day you plan to watch it, and check whether the listed audio and subtitles are offered there.
Which picks are safest for a family movie night?
Start with The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind or The Half of It, then review Netflix’s local maturity label and the content notes above. The list also contains graphic horror, war violence and adult sexual material that are not appropriate for children.
Why doesn’t this list use Rotten Tomatoes scores or Netflix view counts?
The available evidence does not establish a comparable, current audience statistic for all 23 films. “Underrated” here is an editorial judgment about discoverability and lasting appeal, not a claim that every title has a particular score or ranking.
What should I do if a recommended title is missing from my catalog?
Try the film’s exact title without punctuation, check your profile’s maturity settings and confirm that you are browsing the intended country. If it still does not appear, choose another film from the same mood or intensity section rather than assuming a different regional listing.
