The Wasp is a 2024 British psychological thriller about two estranged former school friends and an unexpected proposition. Naomie Harris and Natalie Dormer give its tightly contained confrontations real charge; whether its escalating turns feel gripping or overly theatrical will depend on your appetite for a talk-heavy, twist-driven story. Calling it the wildest film of the year is a personal reaction, not a universal verdict.

What is The Wasp about?

Heather (Naomie Harris) and Carla (Natalie Dormer) have not spoken for years when they meet over tea. Heather makes an unexpected proposal, setting off a psychological contest shaped by old grievances, power shifts and revelations. The film’s official synopsis keeps the setup spare; the fuller premise involves a request to commit murder, so that detail is best left unspoiled if you plan to watch.

Directed by Guillem Morales, The Wasp runs approximately 95–96 minutes, depending on the listing. It had a limited US theatrical release on August 30, 2024, with Shout! Studios listed as distributor by Rotten Tomatoes. XYZ Films’ film page lists Morales and the leads; runtime listings vary between the BBFC, Rotten Tomatoes and Apple TV’s US listing.

Why the performances and reveals make it compelling

The film’s central appeal is the changing balance between Heather and Carla. Harris and Dormer have to carry extended, often confrontational scenes in a limited setting, making shifts in tone and control more important than spectacle. The design puts the audience close to the characters’ competing accounts of the past, and the revelations repeatedly ask you to reconsider what each woman wants from the other.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania [Blu-ray]
  • Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) and Hope van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly) are Ant-Man and The Wasp.

That construction is also the film’s main risk. The story depends on people talking, withholding information and revising what they have said; if a turn feels too engineered, the same tightness can read as theatrical artifice rather than suspense. The surprises may be jaw-dropping in the moment, but surprise is not the same as plausibility. The film works best for viewers willing to enjoy the performances and tension even when the plotting invites skepticism.

Is The Wasp worth watching?

If you like actor-led psychological thrillers built around a small cast, uneasy conversations and reversals, it is worth considering. The leads’ performances give the premise momentum, and the confined setup keeps attention on their shifting relationship. If you need a thriller to feel naturalistic or prefer action and a broader world, the conspicuously stage-shaped structure may frustrate you.

  • Just when his time under house arrest is about to end, Scott Lang once again puts his freedom at risk to help Hope van Dyne and Dr. Hank Pym dive into the quantum realm and try to accomplish, against time and any chance of success, a very dangerous rescue mission.

Critical reaction reflects that divide. Rotten Tomatoes’ displayed consensus highlights Harris and Dormer while acknowledging the film’s stage-bound feel. Sheila O’Malley of RogerEbert.com praised the script’s tight construction; Variety’s Murtada Elfadl praised the leads’ energy but found some circular scenes repetitive. Those responses point to the film’s central trade-off: concentrated performance and construction on one side, repetition and theatricality on the other.

As a date-stamped snapshot accessed October 4, 2026, Rotten Tomatoes showed a 76% Tomatometer from 37 reviews and a 72% Popcornmeter from 100+ ratings. Those live aggregate figures can change and should not be mistaken for a fixed measure of how every viewer will respond.

  • Jason Statham stars in "The Beekeeper," a heart-pounding action-thriller about a mysterious Beekeeper.
  • Adam Clay (Statham), a former operative of a powerful organization known as Beekeepers, upends his covert life and embarks on a brutal revenge mission to dismantle corruption at the highest levels of our society.
  • The stellar cast also includes Emmy Raver-Lampman, Josh Hutcherson, Bobby Naderi, Minnie Driver, Phylicia Rashad and Jeremy Iron, amongst others.

How the film relates to the stage play

The Wasp is adapted by Morgan Lloyd Malcolm from her stage play of the same name. The film’s concentrated cast and dialogue-led confrontations make that theatrical origin easy to feel, though the available source information does not establish specific scene-by-scene changes between stage and screen.

Readers interested in the source can find distinct paperback editions: Nick Hern Books records the original 2015 edition as 64 pages, while Bloomsbury lists an 80-page Methuen Drama paperback published in 2026. These are editions of the play, not a novelization or a film disc. See Nick Hern Books’ 2015 edition and Bloomsbury’s 2026 edition.

Content guidance and where to watch

The BBFC lists sexual violence, brief strong violence and very strong language. Its detailed content advice also mentions bullying and assault, childhood physical abuse, a knife attack and threats, harm to a bird, and a description of sexual assault. Check the BBFC listing if you need more detailed guidance; some specifics may spoil story developments.

Rotten Tomatoes lists rental or purchase through Fandango, and Apple has a US listing. Digital availability and terms vary by territory and can change, so check the storefronts available where you live rather than assuming a particular subscription service carries it.
