The Naked Gun (2025) is a new entry in the classic police-spoof franchise, with Liam Neeson taking over the central role as Lt. Frank Drebin Jr. The official teaser trailer presents the film as an action-comedy built around the mismatch between Neeson’s familiar tough-guy screen image and the ridiculous, deadpan world of Police Squad! and The Naked Gun.
This is not a conventional Liam Neeson thriller. The teaser promotes a broad comedy about an inept police lieutenant, inherited family expectations, absurd investigations, physical gags, and a deliberately straight-faced approach to nonsense.

What is The Naked Gun (2025) about?
The film follows Lt. Frank Drebin Jr., played by Liam Neeson, as he follows his father into Police Squad and attempts to save the world. The premise provides a direct generational link to the earlier Frank Drebin while allowing the new film to establish its own lead character.
That distinction matters. The 2025 movie is not simply a remastered version of the 1988 comedy and is not presented as a scene-for-scene remake. It is a new continuation or reboot built around the Drebin name, the Police Squad setting, and the franchise’s police-procedural parody.
Why Liam Neeson is an effective choice for the reboot
The teaser’s most obvious comic idea is the contrast between Liam Neeson’s established action-star persona and Frank Drebin Jr.’s comic surroundings. Neeson is strongly associated with determined, physically capable characters, urgent threats, and serious revenge or rescue missions. The Naked Gun places that image inside a universe where police work can collapse into wordplay, visual absurdity, and spectacular incompetence.

- DIMENSIONS: This large picture frame features a 1.1-inch wide modern profile and holds a 27x40 x 0.75 poster, picture or artwork.
This also gives the reboot a clear audience bridge: fans of Neeson’s action films have an immediate reason to be curious, while longtime fans of Leslie Nielsen’s Frank Drebin can judge how the new performance fits the older comic tradition.
The generational handoff from Frank Drebin to Frank Drebin Jr.
The original franchise centered on Leslie Nielsen’s Lt. Frank Drebin. The 2025 film shifts the focus to his son, Frank Drebin Jr., preserving the family identity while changing the performer and the generation.
That setup solves one of the practical problems facing a legacy comedy. The new film can acknowledge the earlier character without pretending that the original star is being replaced in exactly the same story. Frank Drebin Jr. is a new protagonist with a built-in connection to the franchise’s past.
It also creates a simple dramatic engine: a son trying to follow his father’s path into Police Squad. In a conventional police drama, that might be a story about responsibility and reputation. In The Naked Gun, it is an opportunity to turn professional duty, family legacy, and heroic self-confidence into comic targets.

Akiva Schaffer directs the film and shares writing credit with Dan Gregor and Doug Mand. Seth MacFarlane is among the producers. Schaffer’s involvement is particularly relevant to viewers deciding whether the new film is likely to treat the material as a straight action remake or as a full-scale genre parody: the official positioning is firmly action comedy and police spoof.
How the teaser fits the Naked Gun tradition
The earlier films drew their comedy from treating an absurd police story as if it were a serious procedural. The new teaser uses the same basic framework: recognizable action-film stakes are placed next to deadpan behavior, exaggerated physical comedy, and jokes that undermine the seriousness of the situation.
That approach is different from a parody that simply references other movies. The Naked Gun works best when the characters appear to believe they are in a standard police adventure even as the film quietly breaks the rules of that genre. The central question for the reboot is therefore not whether it can reproduce individual jokes from the older movies, but whether it can preserve that serious-faced comic rhythm for a new cast and audience.
Which movie is the original?
The original feature is The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad! (1988), starring Leslie Nielsen. To avoid confusion with the 2025 film, use the full 1988 title when searching for the first movie or buying a physical edition.
The 1988 film is the natural companion to the new teaser because it establishes the Frank Drebin character and the franchise’s police-spoof formula. The later films are also part of the same legacy, but the first movie is the clearest starting point for anyone who wants to understand the character being carried forward through Frank Drebin Jr.
If the teaser sends you back to the source material, compare it with The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad! on 4K Blu-ray. That is a separate release from the 2025 film, not a disc that includes both movies.

The best expectation to bring to the film is “action movie played as absurd police comedy,” not “serious Liam Neeson crime thriller.” Its appeal depends on whether that collision of tones works for you: the drama supplies the structure, while the parody repeatedly pulls the structure apart.
