The Fall of El Mayo is a three-episode Netflix documentary series about Sinaloa Cartel co-founder Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada García and the unresolved circumstances of his July 25, 2024 arrival in New Mexico and subsequent U.S. custody. Premiering October 29, 2026, the series examines whether the event was a kidnapping, a betrayal or a covert operation—competing explanations that the announcement presents as questions under investigation, not established findings.
What is The Fall of El Mayo about?
The series follows the downfall of Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada García, a co-founder of the Sinaloa Cartel and longtime partner of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán. Its central mystery begins on July 25, 2024, when Zambada landed at a small airport in New Mexico on a private plane with Joaquín Guzmán López, El Chapo’s son, before being taken into U.S. custody.
Netflix describes the program as an investigation into the capture and the question of who betrayed Zambada. Rather than treating one explanation as proven, the documentary weighs three possibilities: kidnapping, betrayal and a covert operation. The title page classifies it as a documentary with political, Mexican, organized-crime and limited-series descriptors.
When does The Fall of El Mayo come out, and how long is it?
All three episodes premiere on Netflix on October 29, 2026. Netflix lists the project as a limited series from Mexico, produced by Muck Media Productions.

Because it is labeled a limited series, the three episodes are presented as a complete documentary project rather than an announced ongoing season.
What happened to El Mayo on July 25, 2024?
According to Netflix’s announcement, Zambada arrived at a small New Mexico airport aboard a private aircraft with Joaquín Guzmán López. U.S. authorities then took him into custody. The series reconstructs that sequence and the surrounding power struggle, but the available announcement does not establish how Zambada came to be on the plane or which account of the event is correct.
The episode is significant because Zambada had been a central figure in the Sinaloa Cartel for decades while maintaining an unusually low public profile. The documentary uses the airport arrival as a way to examine the relationships, rivalries and consequences surrounding his sudden appearance in U.S. custody.

Does the documentary prove that El Mayo was kidnapped or betrayed?
No. Netflix frames kidnapping, betrayal and a covert operation as competing explanations the filmmakers investigate. The promotional material does not present a legal or historical finding that settles the dispute.
That distinction matters when interpreting the trailer. Images, testimony and archival material can establish what the documentary is examining, but they do not by themselves prove who arranged the journey or what each participant intended. Viewers should treat the claims as arguments to be assessed across the completed episodes.
How did the filmmakers report the story?
The reporting combines exclusive testimony, previously unseen archival footage, hundreds of court records from Mexico and the United States, and accounts from both sides of the border. That mix allows the series to place the July 25 episode alongside documentary evidence and competing personal accounts rather than relying only on narration or a single interview.

Who directed and produced The Fall of El Mayo?
Darren Foster and Miguel Fernández Flores directed the series. Foster and Mariana Van Zeller are executive producers, with Zoey Haar, Keegan Hamilton and Miguel Ángel Vega among the producers. Muck Media Productions is credited as the production company.
The directors summarize their approach this way: “The result is an in-depth exploration of power and betrayal in the murky world of organized crime.” That description signals a focus broader than the arrest itself: the series connects the disputed transfer to the structures and personal alliances that made Zambada’s position possible.

What should viewers watch for in the trailer?
The 2-minute-9-second trailer establishes the New Mexico arrival, the involvement of Joaquín Guzmán López and the mystery surrounding Zambada’s custody. It also introduces the documentary’s evidence-led method—testimony, archival footage and court records—without resolving the competing narratives.
The announcement notes that before Zambada’s downfall there were only a few photographs of him and no recording of his voice. That scarcity helps explain why the filmmakers emphasize newly surfaced material and firsthand accounts when constructing the series.

No. Netflix presents it as a documentary limited series. Its account is built from testimony, archival footage and Mexican and U.S. court records rather than scripted reenactment being identified as the primary format.
Does the trailer explain how Zambada got onto the private plane?
The announced material establishes that he arrived in New Mexico with Joaquín Guzmán López, but it does not explain the full logistics or prove who arranged the trip. Those unanswered circumstances are part of the investigation the episodes promise to reconstruct.
What perspective does the series take on organized crime?
The directors describe it as an exploration of power and betrayal within organized crime. Netflix’s classification also places it in political and Mexican documentary contexts, indicating that the story is treated as a cross-border power episode as well as a criminal case.
