The Battle to Expose Elon is about Alex Gibney’s nearly four-hour documentary Musk, an investigation into how Elon Musk accumulated influence across Silicon Valley, Tesla, SpaceX, X, Donald Trump’s political orbit and DOGE. How was the documentary made without Musk’s cooperation?
Musk did not sit for an interview. The production therefore relies on public records and people who have worked with, known or studied him.
- Archival material: Public speeches, interviews, corporate appearances and other recorded footage establish Musk’s own words over time.
- Interviews: Listed participants include Justine Musk, Kara Swisher and Ashley St. Clair, alongside journalists, officials and other people connected to the story.
- AI-generated avatar: A computer-generated Musk appears using words taken from his collected public recordings. It is a production device, not a new statement from Musk or evidence that he participated.
Gibney worked on the film for almost four years. HBO encouraged him to continue as Musk’s political role expanded. Editing produced a six-hour version at one point, but the released cut was reduced to the material the filmmakers considered most urgent.

The “Extended Cut” wording appears in digital retail listings, but the available reporting does not establish whether it is a different runtime from the theatrical version. No researched source announced a DVD or Blu-ray release.

Why were advertisements blocked or delayed?
The film’s marketing became a dispute over how platforms classify political content. Status reported that YouTube, TikTok and Meta initially blocked promotion by labeling the documentary “political.” TikTok also banned the advertising account as the wide release approached. X refused paid advertising even though it is owned by Musk.
Associated Press reported that Bleecker Street could not purchase ads on YouTube, Meta, TikTok and X as of September 25, 2026. AP later reported that YouTube and Meta reversed their decisions after reviewing the political-content flags. The accounts differ in timing, but both describe a campaign that faced restrictions on multiple large networks.
Gibney characterized X as “a propaganda tool for Musk” and “a rage addicting machine.” Those are his descriptions of the platform, not neutral findings by the distributors. The wider issue is practical: a documentary about concentrated technology and political power had difficulty buying ordinary promotional reach from the companies that control much of online discovery.

Gibney told Status, “He has accreted all this power, and he has no idea why.” In an interview with AP, he added, “I didn’t make it for him,” making clear that the film is not intended as a response to Musk’s preferences or a collaborative portrait. Another AP quotation places the project in a broader political economy: “We live in that world now, particularly a world that’s become so transactional in the political realm … it’s literally pay to play.”
