The more useful list is a ranked selection of documentaries and documentary episodes connected to the company: some investigate J&J products and litigation, while others examine the wider pharmaceutical and personal-care industries or document projects sponsored by the company.
The distinction matters. A 2023 CNN investigation into Johnson’s Baby Powder is not the same kind of film as a four-part series about the cosmetics industry, and a J&J-sponsored AIDS documentary is not a corporate exposé. The titles below identify what each programme actually covers.

1. Toxic Beauty (2019)
Best for: a substantial feature-length examination of cosmetics, talc and corporate responsibility.
Directed by Phyllis Ellis and running for approximately 90 minutes, Toxic Beauty is the strongest feature documentary for viewers specifically interested in Johnson & Johnson’s talc controversy. It follows the health and regulatory debate around personal-care products, with considerable attention to the lawsuits alleging that J&J’s talc products were contaminated with asbestos or linked to cancer.
The film is broader than Johnson & Johnson. It also considers cosmetics regulation, scientific evidence, consumer exposure and the difficulty of proving causation in court. That wider scope is a strength: the company’s legal battle is placed inside the history of the beauty and personal-care industries rather than treated as an isolated scandal.
It should still be watched critically. Allegations, studies, regulatory positions, jury verdicts and settlements are different kinds of evidence. A verdict in an individual case does not, by itself, answer every scientific question about every talc product or disease.

2. Shaken: Baby Powder on Trial (2023)
Best for: a current television investigation focused specifically on the baby-powder litigation.
This episode of The Whole Story with Anderson Cooper, reported by Pamela Brown and premiered on May 7, 2023, examines cancer claims involving J&J’s talc-based baby powder, the plaintiffs bringing lawsuits and the company’s strategy for dealing with its talc liabilities.
The CNN programme is not a standalone feature film. It is a documentary-news episode, but it belongs near the top of this list because its subject is unambiguously Johnson & Johnson’s baby-powder controversy. The accompanying CNN transcript is useful for checking the claims and responses presented in the broadcast.
3. The New York Times Presents: Johnson & Johnson (2019)
Best for: a concise introduction to the Reuters reporting and talc allegations.
Originally broadcast on October 6, 2019, this approximately 25-minute documentary-news episode examines reporting that J&J’s talc products contained asbestos and had been linked to cancer. It was originally associated with The Weekly and was later presented under The New York Times Presents branding.
The episode’s narrow focus makes it more directly relevant than many longer documentaries that merely mention the company. It is structured as an investigation rather than a corporate biography, concentrating on documents, reporting and the competing accounts surrounding the talc claims.

4. Inside the Johnson & Johnson Baby Powder Controversy (2023)
Best for: a short, company-specific explainer.
This Bloomberg Investigates segment, released on May 11, 2023, runs for approximately 24 minutes and covers the talc-based baby powder, cancer lawsuits, asbestos allegations and J&J’s response. It is considerably shorter and less expansive than Toxic Beauty, but that is precisely why it works as a starting point.

The Bloomberg Originals video is a documentary segment rather than a feature film. It is best used alongside a longer treatment, particularly if the viewer wants a quick chronology of the controversy before watching the more detailed legal and scientific discussions elsewhere on this list.
5. Not So Pretty (2022)
Best for: understanding the personal-care industry around the J&J controversy.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Narrated by Keke Palmer, this four-part investigative series examines cosmetics, hair care, nail care and personal-care products. Its discussion of talc, asbestos and product-safety claims includes Johnson’s Baby Powder, making it relevant to viewers researching J&J without making the company the series’ central subject.
Not So Pretty is valuable context for Toxic Beauty and the shorter talc investigations. It looks at how products are regulated, marketed and tested across an entire industry. It should not be described as a Johnson & Johnson documentary: the company is one example within a much larger argument about consumer-product safety.
6. Cold Case: The Tylenol Murders (2025)
Best for: the history of the Tylenol cyanide murders and the transformation of product packaging.
This three-part Netflix series investigates the 1982 poisonings in which cyanide was placed in Tylenol capsules. Its episodes—“Pain Killer,” “The Bitter Pill” and “Sealed for Your Protection”—follow the criminal investigation and examine the changes to consumer-product safety that followed.

Tylenol was manufactured by McNeil Consumer Products, a Johnson & Johnson subsidiary at the time. The series therefore covers a major J&J product crisis, including the company’s response and the development of tamper-resistant packaging. However, its primary genre is true crime, not corporate history or a general investigation of Johnson & Johnson.
The official Netflix listing is the appropriate reference for the series and its episode structure. It is the best choice here for viewers more interested in Tylenol than talc.

7. The Whistleblower, season 3, episode 10: “Attorney Kelly Hyman” (2019)
Best for: hearing a litigation-focused account from an attorney involved in the baby-powder debate.
This approximately 19-minute episode is built around an interview with attorney Kelly Hyman about the Johnson & Johnson baby-powder asbestos litigation. It addresses the lawsuits and the competing claims about asbestos testing.
The Apple TV episode listing confirms the programme’s identity. It ranks below the independently reported investigations because it is essentially an interview episode, not a feature documentary with the same breadth of reporting. It may nevertheless be useful to viewers comparing the legal arguments presented across the different programmes.
8. The Crime of the Century (2021)
Best for: placing J&J’s opioid-related controversies within the broader U.S. opioid crisis.
Alex Gibney’s two-part HBO documentary examines the pharmaceutical companies, distributors, marketers and regulators involved in the opioid crisis. Its main focus is on Purdue Pharma, the Sackler family and the wider system that enabled aggressive opioid promotion, but Johnson & Johnson is discussed among the pharmaceutical companies connected to the story.
This is an important recommendation for readers researching the company’s pharmaceutical controversies, but it would be inaccurate to market it as a documentary about Johnson & Johnson. The PBS/NPR coverage explains the film’s wider subject and scope.

9. Opioids, Inc. (2020)
Best for: investigating opioid marketing practices through the Insys Therapeutics case.
This approximately 53-minute FRONTLINE documentary focuses on Insys Therapeutics, its fentanyl product Subsys, bribery, insurance fraud and the methods used to promote opioids. Johnson & Johnson is not the central subject. The documentary instead provides an industry comparison, including discussion of pharmaceutical sales practices and references to the reporter’s experience with companies including J&J.

It is therefore a contextual recommendation rather than a direct company profile. Watch it after The Crime of the Century if your interest is in how pharmaceutical marketing and corporate incentives shaped the opioid crisis. The full programme is available through the FRONTLINE documentary page.
10. 5B (2019)
Best for: seeing Johnson & Johnson’s public-health and sponsorship work rather than its controversies.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →5B tells the story of the nurses and caregivers who operated the first dedicated AIDS ward at San Francisco General Hospital during the 1980s AIDS crisis. Directed by Dan Krauss and Paul Haggis, the approximately 95-minute feature is about patients, care workers and a pioneering model of compassionate treatment.
Johnson & Johnson commissioned the film as part of its HIV/AIDS and global-health outreach. That makes it connected to the company, but not about the company. It should be included only with that qualification: 5B documents a public-health story and J&J’s role as sponsor or partner, not a corporate investigation. See the company’s 2019 Health for Humanity report and the film’s Rotten Tomatoes record for background.
Honorable mention: Unseen Enemy (2017)
Janet Tobias’s feature documentary examines Ebola, Zika, influenza and the need for global pandemic preparedness. Johnson & Johnson was the film’s founding outreach partner and exclusive presenter for its CNN broadcast.
It is a notable example of documentary-based public-health advocacy associated with J&J, but the film does not investigate the company, its products or its corporate history. For that reason it is better treated as an honorable mention. CNN’s announcement and J&J’s description of the film explain the partnership.
What changed with Johnson & Johnson’s consumer brands?
Some descriptions of the older viral list are now out of date. Johnson & Johnson completed the separation of its consumer-health business on August 23, 2023. Consumer brands including Johnson’s Baby, Tylenol and Band-Aid are now owned by Kenvue, an independent publicly traded company.
That corporate separation does not erase the historical connection between those products and Johnson & Johnson, nor does it make the documentaries inaccurate. It does mean that present-tense descriptions should be precise. Johnson & Johnson also retained responsibility for certain talc-related liabilities under the separation arrangements. Its talc-based Johnson’s Baby Powder was discontinued globally in 2023 and replaced by a cornstarch-based portfolio; the earlier North American discontinuation was announced in May 2020.

- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.

- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Why the original “ten documentaries” list is misleading
The commonly circulated list behind this topic does not contain ten comparable, verified documentaries. It combines feature films, short news videos, stock-market material, promotional content, duplicate coverage of the talc litigation and descriptive phrases that do not clearly identify films with normal documentary metadata.
A reliable list must therefore separate direct investigations from industry documentaries and sponsored films. It should also avoid presenting a jury verdict as proof that talc causes cancer in every context. The programmes above may present plaintiff evidence, scientific studies, company denials, regulatory findings and litigation outcomes, but those categories should not be collapsed into one claim.
The best viewing order
- Start with Toxic Beauty for the broadest feature-length treatment of talc and personal-care products.
- Watch Shaken: Baby Powder on Trial for a later television investigation of the lawsuits and liability strategy.
- Use The New York Times Presents: Johnson & Johnson and Bloomberg’s Inside the Johnson & Johnson Baby Powder Controversy as concise, company-specific accounts.
- Watch Not So Pretty for the wider cosmetics and personal-care context.
- Turn to Cold Case: The Tylenol Murders for the separate history of the company’s Tylenol product crisis.
- Finish with The Crime of the Century and Opioids, Inc. for pharmaceutical-industry context, then 5B for an example of J&J-linked public-health storytelling.
