Taylor Swift’s music became a source of memory and hope for Joe Garcia during more than two decades in prison, but it was one part of a much larger story of remorse, parole preparation and reentry. Daylight, directed by Jon Kasbe and released by The New Yorker Documentary on October 12, 2026, follows Garcia as he leaves prison, reconnects with Ambere, the woman he loved before his incarceration, and tries to make sense of freedom.
Who is Joe Garcia, and why was he in prison?
Garcia is a California writer who was convicted of second-degree murder after a fatal shooting. In his later account, he says he shot and killed a marijuana dealer; the crime followed a confrontation in 2003, when Garcia was living with Ambere in Venice Beach. He received a sentence of 43 years to life and entered state prison in 2009.

That sentence did not mean he would necessarily remain incarcerated for the rest of his life. California’s parole process eventually gave him a hearing, where commissioners assessed whether he was suitable for release. The New Yorker’s 2023 essay and its 2026 documentary frame his eventual release alongside the work he did to confront the harm he caused and prepare for life outside.
How did Taylor Swift’s music help him during prison?
Garcia first encountered Swift’s music in Los Angeles County jail, while awaiting transfer to prison. At first, he dismissed her celebrity image. Over time, television, radio, CDs and later an MP3 player introduced him to songs that became meaningful to him. He wrote in The New Yorker in 2023, “When I listened to her music, I felt that I was still part of the world I had left behind.”

- This documentary DVD features more than 90 minutes of filmed interviews with Taylor Swift from the years when she first started to dominate the world.
The songs also brought Ambere to mind. They had lived together for seven years before his incarceration, and Garcia feared the relationship—and the life he remembered—was gone. He described listening as a way to remain connected to both that past and the world beyond prison walls, not as a cure for the effects of his crime or a substitute for the work of rehabilitation.
In his essay, Garcia recalls finding personal meaning in songs including “Red,” “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together,” “Everything Has Changed,” “All Too Well,” and “Daylight.” He associated the last song with the possibility of emerging from what he called a “twenty-year dark night,” and with its closing spoken line: “I want to be defined by the things that I love.” Those are Garcia’s interpretations of the music; the accounts do not establish that Swift’s songs alone caused his rehabilitation or parole.

What does the documentary Daylight show?
Daylight follows Garcia through the last period of his incarceration and the transition out of prison. The film includes a lifers’ support group, his parole preparation, the release process and his reunion with Ambere. The New Yorker says filming approval came through the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation; the project was being developed as Garcia’s parole case progressed.
The film’s release page describes Garcia as a man who wrote about discovering Swift’s music after a murder conviction and now searches for redemption. Its focus is the person and the consequences of his choices—not a claim that music erases those consequences. Garcia also describes self-reflection, reporting and support-group work as part of the changes in his life.

Was Garcia released, and what happened to Ambere?
Yes. A California parole panel found Garcia suitable for parole in April 2024, and secondary coverage reports that he was released on September 13, 2024. After his 2023 essay drew attention, Ambere reconnected with him; the film captures their reunion and Garcia’s first moments outside. In a 2025 essay, Garcia later wrote about attending Swift’s Eras Tour.
How does Daylight differ from Garcia’s essays?
The documentary gives viewers visual access to prison spaces, the release and the reunion. Garcia’s essays, by contrast, provide his first-person chronology and more room for his own explanations of what particular songs meant to him. Both formats document his account, but they serve different purposes: the film follows events as they unfold, while the essays let Garcia narrate and reflect in his own words.
