Spoilers for the first two episodes. The two-part premiere of Star Wars: Skeleton Crew turns a child’s imagined adventure into a real problem: Wim, Neel, Fern, and KB leave the orderly world of At Attin, then find themselves stranded at a pirate port with no route home. That clean shift—from curiosity to consequence—is the premiere’s strongest promise, even as the season’s larger questions remain open.
What happens in the two-episode premiere?
Set in the New Republic era, Skeleton Crew follows four children who become lost in the galaxy after an unexpected discovery. StarWars.com lists the series as adventure and science fiction, rated TV-PG, and its official page describes an eight-episode season. This review covers only episodes one and two.
Episode 1: “This Could Be a Real Adventure”
At Attin looks quiet and orderly, far removed from the pirates said to trouble the wider galaxy. Wim (Ravi Cabot-Conyers) and his friend Neel (Robert Timothy Smith) go to school, but Wim’s attention is elsewhere: he dreams about Jedi and the chance to help people. Fern (Ryan Kiera Armstrong) and KB (Kyriana Kratter), meanwhile, are focused on a hoverbike and the possibility of racing it.
A career-assessment test is supposed to point the children toward their futures. Wim oversleeps, takes a shortcut, and discovers what he believes is a buried Jedi temple. The discovery draws the four children into a mystery that carries them off At Attin aboard the Onyx Cinder. Episode one is a departure story: the familiar routines are established, then abruptly left behind.

Episode 2: “Way, Way Out Past the Barrier”
The next episode makes that departure harder to romanticize. The children are lost aboard the ship, and SM-33 (voiced by Nick Frost), a droid searching for its former crew, accepts Fern as its new captain. But it cannot plot a course back to At Attin because it does not know how to find the planet.
The ship reaches Starport Borgo, a pirate port where the children seek directions. A bazaar encounter over Wim’s lunch money turns into a fight and imprisonment. They meet Jod (Jude Law), who offers help. At this point, that offer is an opening in their predicament—not proof of what he wants or whether he can be trusted.

Does the premiere make Star Wars accessible to newcomers?
Lucasfilm frames the series as a coming-of-age adventure inspired by 1980s Amblin films, naming E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial and The Goonies. That influence fits the premiere’s point of entry: instead of beginning with a sweeping account of galactic politics, the story starts with children who know stories about Jedi but have little practical experience of the galaxy.
Wim’s enthusiasm gives familiar Star Wars ideas the freshness of something encountered from the outside. The Jedi are not a professional network or a piece of lore to decode for these children; they are part of the exciting world Wim longs to reach. That makes the setup legible even if a viewer is not following every franchise connection. The approach also keeps the scale personal: the central question is what these four will do when the world they imagined proves more difficult than the one they left.

How does the shift from At Attin to Borgo work?
The premiere’s two episodes play as a deliberate contrast. At Attin is defined by school, routine, and a test meant to assign direction. Borgo is a place where the children’s inexperience has immediate costs. Episode one gives Wim the adventure he has been imagining; episode two shows that being in the galaxy is not the same as knowing how to navigate it.
This structure gives the launch momentum without pretending the children can solve their way home at once. The problem is concrete—SM-33 cannot find At Attin—and the pirate port offers neither a safe shortcut nor a comfortable substitute for home. The move from discovery to being lost is the premiere’s most effective escalation.

What do the four children bring to the group?
The initial character contrasts help the ensemble feel like more than four versions of the same young hero. Wim is the restless dreamer, while Neel’s friendship gives that imagination a familiar point of contact. Fern’s practical initiative comes through in her connection to the hoverbike and her role as captain once SM-33 accepts her. KB’s bond with Fern adds another relationship within the group, rather than leaving every dynamic centered on Wim.
Once they are away from home, SM-33 and Jod change the group’s balance. SM-33 is useful but unable to answer the question that matters most: how to get back. Jod appears at a moment when the children need assistance, though the two episodes do not settle his motives. Together, those counterpoints let the children remain central while introducing uncertainty into their reliance on adults and machines.

What the premiere establishes—and what it leaves open
The first episode is chiefly about discovery and departure; the second turns the premise into a survival-and-navigation problem. That is a promising two-step foundation for an adventure, not a verdict on the whole season. The official series page lists eight episodes, and these opening chapters do not resolve the larger questions of At Attin, the children’s return, or the nature of the people they meet.
For broader context, Space.com’s season-level ranking places Skeleton Crew tenth among Star Wars television series. Its assessment describes the season’s relatively low-stakes New Republic adventure as less memorable than the franchise’s biggest television peaks, while praising the premise’s charm and execution. That is a judgment of the full season, not these two episodes alone, but it points to a useful distinction: this show is built around a smaller, child-centered scale rather than a bid to outdo the franchise’s grandest conflicts.
