Hugh Jackman plays Robin after a violent life and a grave injury; a mysterious woman offers him what may be a final chance at salvation. Directed by Michael Sarnoski, the film was listed for theatrical release on June 19, 2026—a date that has passed, so current viewing options depend on your region.
What the first look says about the film
A24’s first-look video introduces a Robin Hood who appears burdened rather than triumphant. That mood fits the official premise: after a life of crime and murder, Robin is gravely injured following a battle and encounters a mysterious woman who offers him a chance at salvation. The setup makes his reckoning—not a new heroic escapade—the story’s central tension.

The footage’s brooding tone is a signal, not a substitute for the film’s full story. The confirmed premise establishes injury, a violent past and a possible path to salvation; it does not establish whether Robin accepts that offer or how his story ends.
Why this is a revisionist Robin Hood
In a June 17, 2026 interview with Variety Australia, writer-director Michael Sarnoski described Robin as haunted and guilt-stricken, with criminality shaped by survival rather than charity. That approach shifts the familiar legend’s moral emphasis: instead of beginning with a benevolent outlaw who redistributes wealth, this version asks what violence has done to a man later turned into folklore.

Sarnoski also pointed to the ballad of Robin Hood’s death as an inspiration. He said, “I loved the legend since I was a little kid,” and continued, “But I loved the ballad about the death of Robin Hood almost as much. This idea that this immortal folkloric figure also has a very human, simple, quiet death stayed with me.” His comments explain the film’s interest in the gap between an immortal folk hero and a mortal, compromised person.
The contrast is with familiar swashbuckling treatments, not every Robin Hood adaptation. The Associated Press review describes this film as a violent, revisionist take; the focus on guilt, survival and Robin’s final days follows Sarnoski’s stated intent.
