It is the third and final season of the Korean scripted drama, so the main story does not continue into a planned Season 4.
This guide covers where to watch Season 3, its spoiler-free story, cast, trailer, episode runtimes and games before explaining the finale, the baby’s victory, Cate Blanchett’s cameo and the uncertain status of possible spin-offs. All three seasons are streaming on Netflix, subject to the service’s catalog availability in your territory. This is the scripted Korean drama, not the separate unscripted reality competition Squid Game: The Challenge.
What Season 3 is about — spoiler-free
Season 3 begins immediately after Gi-hun’s failed uprising against the people running the games. His rebellion came close to the control center, but Player 001 was revealed to be Hwang In-ho, the Front Man, who betrayed the rebels. The uprising collapsed, and In-ho killed Gi-hun’s friend Jung-bae in front of him.

Gi-hun is forced back into the competition carrying guilt over the rebellion and Jung-bae’s death. The Front Man continues trying to destroy Gi-hun’s belief that people can choose solidarity over self-interest. Around them, the surviving players face new games and increasingly desperate choices as the prize money grows and the cost of staying alive becomes more severe.
Season 3 also keeps the story moving outside the arena. Hwang Jun-ho continues searching for the island and for evidence of what is happening there, while No-eul’s storyline provides a parallel perspective on the people caught inside the system. The VIP spectators return to watch the contest, reinforcing that the games are not merely a private conflict between Gi-hun and the Front Man.
The season’s central question is whether Gi-hun can preserve his humanity after repeated attempts to end the games have failed. Netflix’s official synopsis describes a story about his choices in the face of overwhelming despair and the grave consequences confronting the remaining players. What happened at the end of Season 2?
Season 2 recap warning: This section spoils the previous season but not the detailed Season 3 finale.
- Gi-hun persuades other contestants to rebel against the guards rather than continue passively playing the games.
- The rebellion advances toward the control center, but the players do not realize that Player 001 is actually Hwang In-ho, the Front Man.
- In-ho betrays the rebels and helps crush the uprising.
- The Front Man kills Jung-bae in front of Gi-hun, creating the direct emotional and narrative bridge into Season 3.
That ending leaves Gi-hun defeated, grieving and still trapped inside the competition. It also places the Front Man in a position to manipulate him from close range rather than simply observing from behind a mask.

Important returning figures and cameos include Gong Yoo as the Recruiter and Oh Dal-su as Captain Park. Cate Blanchett appears briefly in the finale as an American Recruiter. How many episodes are in Season 3?
There are six episodes. Netflix released them all on June 27, 2025 rather than dividing the season into weekly batches. The listed runtimes range from 55 to 66 minutes, adding up to approximately six hours and six minutes. Runtime metadata can vary slightly between services.

What games appear in Season 3?
Season 3 uses the familiar visual language of children’s games but gives each contest a rule system designed to force moral choices as well as physical ones. The three major games are Hide and Seek, Jump Rope and Sky Squid Game.
Hide and Seek
- Players draw red or blue gumballs.
- Blue players become Hiders, while red players become Seekers.
- Hiders receive keys and must hide or find a route out through a maze.
- Seekers receive knives and must kill at least one Hider.
- A Seeker who fails to eliminate a Hider is killed.
- Players can swap teams if both people agree.
- The game has a 30-minute limit.
The structure turns cooperation into a dangerous calculation: a player may want to change roles, but doing so can make another contestant a target. Netflix says 35 players are eliminated during Hide and Seek, leaving 25 competitors. The full rules and outcomes are outlined in Netflix Tudum’s Season 3 games guide.

In Jump Rope, players must cross a narrow walkway over a drop while Young-hee and the newly introduced Cheol-su operate a giant metal jump rope. Contestants have 20 minutes to cross. The game tests timing and balance, but it also becomes one of the season’s most important moral situations because of Jun-hee and her baby.

Sky Squid Game
The final competition takes place on three elevated towers shaped like a square, triangle and circle. Players must advance from one tower to the next under rules that make every movement consequential:
- At least one player must be pushed from each tower.
- On the second and third towers, a player must press a button to officially start the round.
- A death before the round is activated does not satisfy that round’s requirement.
- If the contestants fail to eliminate someone before the countdown ends, the remaining players are eliminated.
That button rule is essential to understanding the finale. A character can fall to their death and still fail to fulfill the game’s formal condition if the round has not been activated.
Major spoilers for all of Squid Game Season 3 follow. Stop here if you only wanted the release information, plot setup, cast or games.
Season 3 ending explained
Who wins the final game?
Jun-hee’s baby wins the competition. The child is identified as Player 222 and receives the 4.56 billion won prize. After Jun-hee dies, the VIPs insist that the infant remain part of the game rather than treating the baby as outside the rules.
It is not a conventional happy ending. The baby survives and wins, but the victory occurs within a system that has already killed almost everyone else and continues to treat human life as entertainment.
Why does Gi-hun sacrifice himself?
At the top of the final tower, Gi-hun, Myung-gi and the baby are the last participants. Myung-gi tries to kill the infant so that he can claim the prize. He falls during the struggle, but the button has not been pressed, so his death does not officially satisfy the round’s rule.
Gi-hun is left with three possible choices:
- Press the button and kill the baby.
- Do nothing and allow both himself and the baby to die when the countdown ends.
- Activate the round and sacrifice himself so the baby can win.
Gi-hun chooses the third option. He presses the button and gives up his life, preserving the child’s chance to survive. In his final speech, he rejects the VIPs’ belief that the contestants are merely “horses” in a spectacle. His decision is the final answer to the Front Man’s attempt to prove that people will always choose personal survival over responsibility to someone else.
What happens to Jun-hee?
Jun-hee gives birth during Hide and Seek. Later, during Jump Rope, she sacrifices herself so Gi-hun can carry the baby across the walkway. She understands that Gi-hun cannot return for her without putting the infant at risk, so she steps off the platform. Her choice is one of the season’s clearest examples of a player placing another person’s survival above her own.
What happens to the Front Man?
The Front Man survives the collapse of the competition. After Gi-hun’s death, he evacuates the island with the baby. He later leaves the infant and the prize money with his brother, Jun-ho. He also deposits Gi-hun’s remaining fortune and gives it to Gi-hun’s daughter, Ga-yeong, in Los Angeles.
Those actions do not mean that In-ho has fully reformed or become an opponent of the games. They suggest that he retains a degree of humanity, even while continuing to participate in the institution that caused the deaths. His behavior also creates a complicated contrast with Gi-hun: both men make choices affecting the child, but only Gi-hun openly gives his life to protect the baby.
Does Jun-ho find the island?
Jun-ho reaches the VIP viewing area as the island operation collapses and confronts his brother. The brothers do not receive a complete emotional resolution. The Front Man escapes with the baby and later leaves the child with Jun-ho, but the conflict between them is not neatly settled by a conversion, arrest or reconciliation.

No-eul succeeds in getting Gyeong-seok off the island. Six months later, she visits him and his daughter, Na-yeon. Gyeong-seok does not recognize No-eul, while No-eul receives a possible lead suggesting that her own daughter may still be alive in China.
This storyline gives the finale a limited thread of personal hope outside Gi-hun’s sacrifice, but it remains unresolved. No-eul has not recovered her daughter, and the damage caused by the games cannot simply be undone.

Who is Cate Blanchett playing?
The final scene shows the Front Man in Los Angeles witnessing Cate Blanchett’s character playing ddakji with a desperate man. Netflix identifies her as an American Recruiter.
The cameo demonstrates that the game model exists beyond the Korean island. It does not confirm that Blanchett will return, that she is leading an American series or that a Season 4 has been ordered. Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk said the scene was intended as an impactful ending showing the games’ international reach, not as a deliberate setup for another season.
What does the ending mean?
These interpretations come from Hwang Dong-hyuk’s comments and should be understood as the creator’s stated thematic framework rather than the only possible reading of the finale.
- Gi-hun’s sacrifice: Hwang has described it as representing self-restraint, collective responsibility and the possibility of hope even after repeated failure.
- The baby: The child symbolizes the future generation.
- Myung-gi: He represents immediate self-interest and the willingness to sacrifice future generations for personal gain.
- The Front Man: His decision to save and deliver the baby suggests that some humanity remains in him, but it does not establish that he has abandoned the games.
- The wider subject: Hwang has said the story expanded beyond Gi-hun’s revenge toward questions of humanity, solidarity, inequality, climate responsibility and the future.
The finale therefore offers thematic hope without claiming that the institution itself has been destroyed. Gi-hun proves that compassion remains possible, but the American Recruiter scene makes clear that the larger machinery of exploitation continues.

Will there be a Squid Game Season 4?
There is no planned Season 4 of the Korean series. Netflix and Hwang have described Season 3, and specifically Episode 6, as the definitive conclusion of the main story. The fact that the final scene shows another Recruiter does not change that status.

Hwang has discussed possible side stories, including stories about the Front Man or events occurring between Seasons 1 and 2. Those ideas are possibilities, not confirmed productions. A side story would also be different from a fourth season continuing Gi-hun’s main narrative.
Is the David Fincher American spin-off happening?
The status of the reported English-language project associated with David Fincher needs careful wording:
- Industry reports linked Fincher to a separate American-language Squid Game project.
- In 2025, Hwang said he had received no official word from Netflix and denied that Season 3’s finale had been written specifically to launch that project.
- The Cate Blanchett cameo is therefore not confirmation that the project exists or that it will star her.
- The latest report supplied for this update, published by GamesRadar in August 2026 and citing unnamed sources and The Playlist, says the project was no longer moving forward.
- Netflix had not publicly confirmed that cancellation in the available reporting.
The safest current conclusion is: Squid Game itself is over according to Hwang and Netflix’s finale coverage; no Season 4 is planned; and the separate Fincher-associated American project is not officially confirmed as active, although the latest industry report says it has been dropped. Performance and reception
Netflix reported a major commercial debut: approximately 60 million views in the first week, with the season reaching No. 1 in all 93 countries tracked by the service. Those figures show substantial global attention, but viewership is not the same thing as universal approval.
Reception was more divided. At the time of the cited check, Rotten Tomatoes listed Season 3 at 79% from 78 critics and 51% from more than 2,500 audience ratings. Both figures can change as additional reviews and ratings are added, and the gap is a reminder not to describe the final season as universally acclaimed.
The strongest case for Season 3 is its commitment to the series’ central moral question: can people act with solidarity inside a system built to reward betrayal? Its most controversial choice is also its most literal answer. The competition ends with a baby winning, but the games themselves are shown continuing elsewhere, leaving hope in the actions of individuals rather than in the collapse of the institution.

The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Squid Game Season 3 premiered on June 27, 2025 and is streaming in full on Netflix.
