Spotify announced Listening Activity and Request to Jam on January 7, 2026. Listening Activity lets selected friends see the track you are playing in Spotify Messages; Request to Jam turns that discovery into a shared session. Listening Activity is off by default, and Spotify cautions that updates may lag, so “real time” does not guarantee an instant feed.
What Spotify launched
Listening Activity
Listening Activity shows an eligible friend your current or most recently played track inside Spotify’s social and messaging experience. Depending on the account and rollout, a friend can tap that track to play it, save it to their library, react with an emoji, or start or join a Jam. Spotify describes the feature in its announcement at Spotify Newsroom.
This is not a public broadcast of everything you play. It is opt-in, audience-controlled sharing connected to Spotify relationships and Messages conversations.
Request to Jam
Request to Jam is the separate shared-listening layer. From a Spotify Message or a friend’s activity, you can invite that person into a Jam. Participants listen together and contribute tracks to a shared queue. A Jam can also be started from a track, playlist, or connected playback device and shared through a link or QR code.

How this differs from Friend Activity
Spotify’s desktop Friend Activity view has long shown what followed friends are playing. The new mobile experience is more directly conversation-based: activity appears in Messages and can lead to reactions, saving a track, or a Jam invitation. Spotify’s current support documentation covers Listening Activity on mobile and desktop, but Spotify has not said that the older desktop view was completely replaced.
Turn on Listening Activity
On a phone or tablet
- Open Spotify and tap your profile picture.
- Tap Settings and privacy.
- Open Privacy and social.
- Turn on Listening activity.
- Where available, open Who can see your activity to choose the audience.
These labels come from Spotify’s mobile instructions at Listening Activity. The setting applies across devices.

On desktop
- Click your profile picture.
- Open Settings.
- Find Listening Activity and insights.
- Turn Listening Activity on or off and adjust the available audience controls.
Spotify notes that some friend-selection controls may require the mobile app. Desktop guidance is available at Spotify Support.
View and use a friend’s activity
- On mobile, tap your profile picture and open the friend activity or Messages area.
- Open the friend’s activity card or conversation.
- Tap the displayed track to play it, save it, react, or start or join a Jam.
On desktop, open Listening Activity near your profile picture to see activity from eligible friends. You will only see people who have enabled sharing and have an eligible Spotify connection or conversation context.

Start a Jam from activity
- Open the friend’s activity card or Spotify Message.
- Choose the option to ask the friend to Jam, when it appears.
- After acceptance, join the shared session.
- Add songs to the queue; playback controls depend on the host’s settings.
Spotify also supports starting a Jam directly from a track, playlist, or connected device, then inviting people with a share link or QR code. A Jam host can configure participant controls, and the session ends for everyone when the host leaves.

See Spotify’s current rules at Start or join a Jam. Premium matters primarily when you want to host or join remotely; it is not automatically required just to share or view activity.

Privacy and reliability limits
- Off by default: You must enable Listening Activity before others can see it.
- Audience controls: Choose who can view your activity where the control is offered. In group messages, visibility can be managed through chat settings.
- Private Session: Spotify says a Private Session automatically disables Listening Activity for six hours.
- Possible delay: Spotify warns that activity may not update in real time. Treat it as current or recently played activity rather than a guaranteed instant status.
- Message privacy: Spotify Messages are private between participants but are not end-to-end encrypted.
Someone can continue viewing friends’ activity while their own sharing is disabled, provided those friends have enabled sharing. Spotify may suggest contacts who have exchanged shared content, used a Blend or collaborative playlist together, joined a recent Jam, or share a Duo or Family plan. Messages group conversations support up to 10 friends; that limit should not be treated as a universal Jam capacity. Details are in Listening Activity support and Spotify Messages support.

Spotify Messages can share songs, albums, playlists, podcasts, audiobook content, artists, live events, and other Spotify links. Listening Activity itself is described primarily in terms of the track currently playing or last played. Do not assume that every podcast or audiobook playback appears in the same activity card; behavior can depend on the app version and market.

If activity is missing or stale
- Confirm both people have Listening Activity enabled.
- Check that you have an eligible Spotify connection or active chat.
- Update Spotify and your phone or computer operating system.
- Restart Spotify.
- Log out and back in.
- Reinstall Spotify if the problem persists.
- Make sure a Private Session is not active.
- Wait for propagation, since Spotify says updates may be delayed.
If a contact does not appear in Messages
Send the person a Spotify track or playlist through another app and have them open the link. Spotify says that interaction may make the person appear among suggested contacts.
If a Jam will not connect
- Confirm the host has an active Premium subscription.
- For remote joining, confirm the participant also has Premium.
- Check that the intended playback device is selected.
- For an in-person Jam, verify the invitation link or QR code, Bluetooth permissions, and the shared speaker or device setup.
When the feature is useful—and when it is not
Good fit
- Discovering what close friends are playing without sending a separate link.
- Turning a spontaneous recommendation into a conversation.
- Moving from a track recommendation into a collaborative Jam.
Reasons to leave it off
- You regularly play music you consider sensitive, embarrassing, or private.
- You want guaranteed live status rather than a feed that can lag.
- Your group uses different music services or does not want another messaging inbox.
For synchronized listening, Spotify Jam is the native option. Apple Music’s SharePlay is better suited to groups already using Apple devices and FaceTime; Apple Music lists its current service details. Discord is useful for communities that already meet in voice or text channels, while Discord listening integrations depend on account and platform support. Last.fm is stronger for long-term scrobbling and listening history than instant Spotify messaging or synchronized playback.
The practical takeaway
Listening Activity lets selected friends see what you are playing and react to it. Jam is the separate feature for listening together and managing a shared queue. Spotify’s January 7, 2026 launch is therefore a social discovery update—not an automatic, universal listening party—and the real-time label should be read with Spotify’s warning that updates can be delayed.
