Spotify’s custom playlist transitions are already available to eligible Premium users—not just “being added.” The feature launched in 2025 as Mixed playlists, with desktop support rolling out later and Smart Reorder added in 2026. It lets you blend songs and adjust transitions inside a Spotify playlist, but it is not a replacement for full DJ software.
What Spotify’s playlist mixing tools do
Spotify’s custom-transition feature was announced on August 19, 2025. Spotify said it had fully rolled out to eligible Premium users by September 22, 2025. Desktop support followed in a 2026 update. The newer addition is Smart Reorder, announced on February 25, 2026.
The tools work together, but they do different jobs:

- Auto transitions are Spotify-generated blends between tracks.
- Custom transitions let you adjust the handoff between a particular pair of songs.
- Presets such as Fade and Rise provide ready-made transition styles.
- Volume, EQ, and effects let you shape the blend. Spotify’s support page lists low-pass and high-pass filters among the effects.
- Waveform and beat information help you choose where a transition begins. Mixed playlists also display BPM and Song Key.
- Smart Reorder rearranges tracks using BPM and key to help transitions flow more smoothly.
Spotify’s feature is about saving transition settings to a playlist—not exporting a finished audio mix file.

Who can use Mixed playlists?
Spotify lists Mixed playlists as a Premium feature. The feature is available on mobile and desktop for eligible accounts, but availability may still vary by country, account, app version, or platform. Spotify’s instructions say to start with a playlist you created; do not assume that every editorial, algorithmic, or automatically generated playlist can be converted.
People using Spotify Free may be able to open a shared Mixed playlist, but Spotify says it plays as a regular playlist without the transitions. For sharing and collaboration details, see Spotify’s current Mixed playlists support page.
Spotify documents desktop and mobile support, but that does not establish that the Web Player has the same editing controls as the native apps. Desktop editing can provide a larger waveform workspace; details of particular desktop controls may vary across app builds.
How to create a Mixed playlist
- Open a playlist you created in the Spotify app.
- Select Mix. Spotify applies Auto transitions between tracks and displays BPM and Song Key information.
- Select the transition row between two songs to adjust that handoff, or keep the automatic setting.
- Choose a style or adjust the available controls, then select Save.
Spotify’s original instructions describe choosing Auto or a preset, then customizing controls such as volume, EQ, and effects. The exact layout can differ between mobile and desktop. If the Mix button is missing, check that you are signed in to Premium, try a playlist you created, update the native app, and check whether the feature is available for your account and platform.

How to edit a transition
On a Mixed playlist, select the transition row between the outgoing and incoming tracks. Use the available controls to shape the handoff:
- Volume: Adjusts the relative loudness of the two tracks during the blend.
- EQ: Shapes frequency ranges—high, mid, and low—so overlapping parts do not compete as much.
- Effects: Spotify lists low-pass and high-pass filters. These can change which frequencies are prominent during the transition.
Use the waveform and beat information as guides, preview the result if a preview control is available in your interface, and select Save. The goal is not always to make both tracks equally loud: lowering the outgoing track before bringing up the incoming one can help when two bass lines or vocals clash.
What Smart Reorder does—and does not do
To use Smart Reorder, go to Mix → Edit → Smart Reorder. Spotify says it reorders tracks according to BPM and key, aiming for smoother transitions. It is a useful starting point if you want a more compatible sequence without rearranging every track yourself.
That description does not mean Smart Reorder understands your full set-building intent. Spotify does not say that it optimizes lyrics, genre, mood, energy progression, or personal taste. A technically compatible order may still be wrong for a story, workout crescendo, party arc, or deliberate change of mood. Review the sequence and move tracks back when your musical judgment calls for it.

How to make transitions sound better
Spotify recommends considering similar tempos, compatible keys, and the playlist’s energy. Beat-driven genres such as house and techno often offer natural room for blends. These are general recommendations, not a guarantee that every pairing will sound good.
- Listen for phrasing, not only BPM. Two songs can share a tempo yet have vocal entries or musical phrases that collide.
- Look for transition-friendly intros and outros. Instrumental openings, extended endings, and steady percussion tend to leave more room to blend.
- Manage low frequencies. If two bass-heavy tracks muddy the handoff, reduce the outgoing bass or try another transition.
- Build an energy arc deliberately. A playlist for a run or party may benefit from gradual changes, but a sudden contrast can be a purposeful choice.
- Be selective with spoken-word or irregular material. Podcasts, audiobooks, live recordings, ballads, and tracks with hard stops or changing tempos may not suit music-style transitions. Spotify’s documentation does not establish that custom transitions apply to podcasts or audiobooks.
If a transition sounds worse than a clean gap, change the order, try a preset, edit the controls, or leave that handoff as a normal track change.

You can share a Mixed playlist like other Spotify playlists. Spotify says Premium users can collaborate, add tracks, and customize the mix. Recipients on Free hear regular playlist playback rather than the transitions.

Playback device matters, too. Spotify says Mixed playlists can be heard on speakers and other devices over Bluetooth, but playback through Spotify Connect reverts to a regular playlist. That can explain why transitions seem to disappear after sending playback to a network speaker, TV, console, or another Connect-enabled device.

Selecting Mix again turns off the mixed playback and plays the playlist normally; selecting it again restores the saved transitions. Spotify describes this as a toggle, so turning Mix off should not be confused with deleting your transition setup. You also cannot edit transitions while in Offline mode. Spotify’s support page confirms the editing restriction, but does not specify every offline playback behavior for previously saved Mixed playlists.

Spotify is a convenient option if you already use Premium and want to make a personal, shareable playlist flow more smoothly without moving music into another app. It is a poor fit if you need live cueing, looping, scratching, hot cues, stems, a microphone, external controllers, recording, or mixing tracks from multiple services. Those needs call for a dedicated DJ application, not a playlist toggle.
Troubleshooting common problems
There is no Mix button
Check Premium status and try a playlist you created in the native mobile or desktop app. Update Spotify, sign out and back in, and check current support information if it is still missing. The cause may be account, region, platform, app version, or playlist eligibility; no one explanation applies to every account.
My transitions seem to have disappeared
Check whether Mix was toggled off, whether you are listening on a Free account, or whether playback moved to Spotify Connect. Each can result in regular playlist playback. If you are trying to change a transition while offline, reconnect first: Spotify does not support transition editing in Offline mode.
A transition sounds wrong
Try a different order, compare the BPM and key, and listen for clashes in vocals, phrasing, or bass. Use a preset as a starting point, then adjust volume, EQ, or a filter. BPM and key are useful clues, not guarantees of a seamless musical fit.
