Sound Issues on Amazon Prime Video: A Complete Troubleshooting Guide

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The fastest way to fix sound problems on Amazon Prime Video is to identify which kind of problem you have first. Check another Prime Video title, then another streaming app. If the issue affects only one title, inspect its audio tracks. If every app is silent, check the TV, Soundbar, receiver, HDMI connection, Bluetooth routing, and volume settings. If sound drops out with buffering, investigate the network.

Prime Video sound complaints usually fall into four groups: no audio, dialogue that is too quiet, audio that cuts out or is out of sync, and an unwanted language or Audio Description track. The correct fix depends on the group.

Quick diagnosis

Symptom Start here
No sound in Prime Video or other apps Check mute, the selected TV output, Soundbar or receiver input, HDMI, Bluetooth, and the device itself.
No sound only in Prime Video Try another title, check the audio track, restart or update Prime Video, and test the same title on another device.
A narrator describes everything Change the selected track and turn off Audio Description.
Voices are in the wrong language Open Audio & Languages during playback and choose the intended language.
Dialogue is hard to hear Try Dialogue Boost if the title supports it, then compare TV speakers, headphones, and soundbar modes.
Sound cuts out while video buffers Restart the streaming device and router, check the connection, and update device software.
Surround sound or Dolby Atmos is missing Check the title, device, HDMI/HDCP path, receiver or soundbar, and output settings.
Audio and video are out of sync Restart playback and isolate the soundbar, receiver, HDMI connection, and external audio processing.

1. Find out whether the problem is the title, the app, or the audio system

Before changing cables or buying equipment, run these tests:

  1. Play a different Prime Video title on the same device.
  2. Play the affected title again after stopping and restarting playback.
  3. Open another streaming app on the same device.
  4. If possible, play the affected Prime Video title on another supported device.
  5. Switch temporarily from a soundbar or AV receiver to the TV’s built-in speakers.

The results narrow the fault:

  • Only one title is affected: inspect that title’s available audio tracks. Its audio options may differ from those of other programs, and a title-specific fault may need to be reported to Prime Video.
  • All Prime Video titles are affected but other apps work: concentrate on the Prime Video app, device software, selected track, and the device’s audio-output path.
  • Every app is silent: the likely problem is outside the Prime Video title—such as mute, output selection, the soundbar or receiver, HDMI, Bluetooth, or the TV itself.
  • Only the soundbar or receiver produces the problem: test the TV speakers and then inspect the external audio path.

Prime Video features are not identical for every title, device, or platform. The presence or absence of Dolby Atmos, multiple languages, Audio Description, or Dialogue Boost is not by itself proof that anything is broken.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Select the correct audio track and turn off Audio Description

If someone is narrating actions, describing scenes, or explaining visual details throughout the program, you may have selected an Audio Description track. That is an accessibility feature, not necessarily a speaker or app failure.

During playback on many connected devices:

  1. Press Up on the remote.
  2. Choose Audio & Languages.
  3. Select the standard audio track in the desired language rather than the track identified as Audio Description.

On the web, Amazon devices, and mobile devices, open the captions/subtitles icon or the separate Audio option, then select the desired track. The exact control can vary by app version and device.

This also fixes the common complaint that voices are in the wrong language. A title can offer several language tracks, but availability varies by title and location. If the expected language is not listed, it may not be available for that title on your device or in your region.

3. Try Dialogue Boost when dialogue is too quiet

For supported titles, Prime Video offers Dialogue Boost, which is designed to make spoken dialogue easier to hear. During playback, open the captions/subtitles or Audio menu and choose Medium or High Dialogue Boost.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The setting may not appear for every title, device, or platform. It is a software-level listening aid: it can improve speech intelligibility, but it will not repair a missing audio channel, damaged speaker, faulty HDMI connection, or silent output device.

If Dialogue Boost is unavailable or does not help, compare:

  • TV speakers versus the soundbar or receiver;
  • normal audio mode versus a dialogue, voice, or speech mode;
  • TV listening at a moderate volume versus wired or Bluetooth headphones, if supported.

Turn off or reduce night mode, volume leveling, dynamic-range compression, or similar processing if it makes the program unusually flat or quiet. Menu names differ by manufacturer, so use the audio settings for your particular TV, soundbar, or receiver.

4. Restart and update Prime Video

Restarting is worthwhile when sound disappeared after resuming a program, switching outputs, waking the device, or installing an app or system update. Close Prime Video completely rather than merely returning to the home screen, then open it again.

Next, check for updates to:

  • the Prime Video app;
  • the TV, streaming stick, or set-top box;
  • your web browser, if watching on a computer;
  • the mobile operating system, where applicable.

For Fire TV, Amazon’s documented path is Settings > My Fire TV > About > Check for System Update. Other devices use different labels.

Also confirm that the device’s date and time are correct and set to update automatically. Disable a VPN or proxy temporarily, since it can interfere with playback or title availability. If the problem persists, sign out and back in, and reinstall the Prime Video app. Reinstallation is more disruptive than restarting, so reserve it for an app that remains faulty after the simpler steps.

5. Check the complete HDMI and audio signal path

With an external player, sound may travel through this chain:

Prime Video device → HDMI cable → TV, AV receiver, or soundbar → speakers

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A problem anywhere in that chain can affect whether audio is delivered, which format is negotiated, or which device receives the sound. Amazon’s playback guidance references HDCP 1.4 for HD content and HDCP 2.2 for UHD and/or HDR content over HDMI. Dolby Vision also requires compatible support from the TV or display and any additional connected device.

Try the following isolation sequence:

  1. Unplug and firmly reconnect both ends of the HDMI cable.
  2. Switch the player to another HDMI input on the TV or receiver.
  3. Connect the Prime Video device directly to the TV, temporarily bypassing the soundbar or AV receiver.
  4. Test the TV speakers.
  5. If the direct connection works, reconnect the external audio device and inspect its input, HDMI ARC/eARC connection, format settings, and firmware.

If the cable is visibly damaged, loose, or unable to support the required content path, a compatible HDMI cable is a reasonable replacement. Do not assume that an expensive “premium” cable automatically improves Prime Video sound. Replace a cable to address a suspected physical or compatibility problem—not as a universal cure for quiet dialogue, wrong-language audio, or a title-specific bug.

6. Confirm where the sound is supposed to come out

TV speakers

Check that the TV is not muted and that its selected output is the internal speakers. Temporarily disconnect or disable external audio equipment to make the test unambiguous. Some TVs change output automatically when an HDMI ARC/eARC device or Bluetooth headset connects.

Soundbar or AV receiver

Confirm that the soundbar or receiver is powered on and set to the HDMI input used by the TV or playback device. Check the TV’s audio-output setting and the receiver’s input assignment. If sound is present but dialogue is poor, compare the device’s standard mode with its voice or dialogue mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Wired headphones

If the TV or playback device supports a headphone connection, use it as an isolation test. Clear sound in headphones but not through the speakers points toward the TV, soundbar, receiver, speaker, or HDMI route rather than the Prime Video title itself.

Bluetooth headphones

Confirm that the headphones are still connected to the device actually playing Prime Video. Bluetooth and HDMI are separate output routes; switching between them can move audio away from the TV or soundbar. Pairing menus and supported audio formats vary by TV and streaming device. If Bluetooth sound works, test whether the problem follows the headphones or stays with the HDMI speaker system.

Fire TV documentation distinguishes HDMI audio output from Bluetooth output and notes capability differences between those routes. Therefore, missing surround or Atmos through Bluetooth does not necessarily mean the Prime Video stream is defective.

7. Troubleshoot buffering-related audio dropouts

Network troubleshooting is most relevant when sound disappears together with buffering, pauses, playback errors, or sudden quality changes. It is less likely to explain a consistently wrong language track or Audio Description that starts every time.

  1. Confirm that the playback device is online.
  2. Re-enter the Wi-Fi password if the device reports a connection problem.
  3. Restart the playback device.
  4. Restart the modem and router, then wait for the connection to return.
  5. Install available router firmware and device operating-system updates.
  6. If possible, test a wired connection or another network.

If the issue continues, contact the internet service provider. Amazon’s connected-device guidance also notes that blocked DNS traffic on port 53 can interfere with connectivity; that is an ISP or network-administrator issue rather than a reason to change the audio track.

An Ethernet cable for streaming device is useful only if the device supports wired networking and the Wi-Fi connection is the suspected weakness. Similarly, a new router is not a direct sound fix. Consider either only after confirming that buffering and network instability accompany the audio interruptions.

8. Missing surround sound or Dolby Atmos

Do not expect every Prime Video title or device to expose every audio format. Amazon lists Fire TV and Fire TV Stick as supporting streaming up to Ultra HD and audio up to 5.1 surround sound and Dolby Atmos, subject to the device, title, and complete system support. Amazon’s platform documentation also lists different capabilities for different mobile platforms; for example, Android entries may support up to 5.1 and Dolby Atmos, while iOS and Windows entries are listed as stereo. These are platform-level capabilities, not guarantees for every app version, title, configuration, or connected audio system.

If surround or Atmos is missing, check all of these:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • the title’s audio-format listing;
  • the Prime Video device and app;
  • the TV, receiver, and soundbar’s format support;
  • the HDMI cable and HDCP/content path;
  • the TV’s ARC/eARC and digital-audio-output settings;
  • the receiver or soundbar’s input and decoding mode;
  • whether headphones or another stereo route is currently selected.

Directly connecting the playback device to a compatible TV or receiver can reveal whether an intermediate device is limiting the format. A format limitation is different from having no sound at all.

9. Audio and video out of sync

There is no single universal Prime Video sync fix documented in the official guidance reviewed for this article. Use controlled isolation instead:

  1. Stop the title and start playback again.
  2. Try another title on the same device.
  3. Try the same title on another supported device.
  4. Switch to TV speakers and compare the timing.
  5. Bypass the soundbar or receiver temporarily.
  6. Disable or adjust audio-delay, lip-sync, and external sound-processing settings.
  7. Update the app, playback device, TV, receiver, and soundbar.

If the delay occurs only through one soundbar or receiver, its processing or connection is the leading suspect. If it follows the title across several devices, report the title and circumstances to Prime Video rather than assuming new hardware will solve it.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

10. Device-specific branches

Fire TV or Fire TV Stick

Restart the device, check Settings > My Fire TV > About > Check for System Update, and inspect whether audio is being routed through HDMI or Bluetooth. Test TV speakers directly before diagnosing the soundbar. Fire TV can support up to Ultra HD and, where the title and system permit it, 5.1 or Dolby Atmos.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Smart TV app

Restart the TV completely, not just the app; check for a TV firmware update; verify the selected sound output; and test the TV speakers without ARC/eARC or a receiver. If the built-in Prime Video app is the only failing component, reinstall it if the TV permits, or compare with another supported playback device.

Computer browser

Close and reopen the browser, update it, disable a VPN or proxy, and check the computer’s selected output device and volume mixer. Test another browser or another streaming app. If Prime Video audio problems occur alongside broader Windows audio, driver, or system symptoms, follow general Windows audio troubleshooting rather than treating third-party maintenance software as a Prime Video-specific fix.

If Windows audio symptoms point to missing or outdated drivers, Outbyte Driver Updater is an optional tool for reviewing and updating them; it is not a guaranteed Prime Video fix.

Mobile device

Check the phone or tablet’s media volume, Bluetooth connection, app update, and selected audio track. Force-close and reopen Prime Video, restart the device, and test wired or Bluetooth headphones if supported. Platform audio capabilities differ, so stereo output on one mobile platform is not evidence that another device should provide Atmos.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When to contact support

Contact Prime Video when one title has missing or incorrect audio tracks, the problem follows the title across supported devices, or the app remains faulty after restarting, updating, and reinstalling it. Include the title name, episode or timestamp, language or track selected, device and app version, output equipment, and whether another title works.

Contact the TV, soundbar, receiver, or streaming-device manufacturer when other apps have the same audio problem, the issue appears only on that equipment, or direct HDMI and TV-speaker tests isolate the external audio path.

Contact the ISP when audio failures coincide with buffering, disconnections, playback errors, or unstable network performance across services.

Optional equipment: buy only after diagnosis

Hardware should address a confirmed limitation, not replace basic troubleshooting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • HDMI cable: appropriate when the existing cable is damaged, loose, or unsuitable for the required HDCP/content path.
  • Fire TV streaming device: an alternative playback device when the smart-TV app or current player appears to be the source of the problem. It is not a guaranteed repair.
  • Soundbar: an optional upgrade when Prime Video audio is working but TV-speaker dialogue is inadequate. It will not fix a missing track, app error, or bad HDMI path.
  • Bluetooth or wired headphones: useful for private listening or as an isolation test, subject to TV and playback-device support.
  • Ethernet cable or router: relevant only when buffering and connectivity symptoms point to the network.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Prime Video have narration over the movie?

Open the playback Audio or Audio & Languages menu and choose the standard track instead of the track labeled Audio Description. Audio Description is an intentional accessibility feature.

Why is Prime Video dialogue so quiet?

Try Dialogue Boost at Medium or High if the title supports it. Then compare TV speakers, a soundbar’s dialogue mode, and supported headphones. Dialogue Boost cannot repair defective speakers, missing channels, or HDMI failures.

Why does Prime Video have no sound but other apps work?

Try another Prime Video title, check the selected audio track, close and restart the app, update the app and device, and test the same title on another supported device.

Why does Prime Video sound stop when the video buffers?

Check the device’s internet connection, restart the device and router, update firmware and software, and contact the ISP if the problem continues. Network troubleshooting is most relevant when buffering and playback errors accompany the sound loss.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why is Dolby Atmos or surround sound unavailable on Prime Video?

Verify that the title, playback device, app, TV, receiver or soundbar, HDMI/HDCP path, and output settings all support the format. Not every title, platform, or audio route supports Atmos or surround.

The Bottom Line

Start with the audio track and a second title, then isolate the app, device, output route, HDMI chain, and network in that order. A replacement cable or new audio device is worthwhile only when a controlled test points to that component; it is not a universal solution for Prime Video sound problems.
